  1. And just for the answer to the question that was actually asked...tomorrow at noon CST.

  2. As a freshman in college, this will be my first year looking at the state tournament as a fan rather than a competitor, and I thought that maybe I'd make some predictions way early on to see how well I can do. I am going to state my top 3 picks in each weight class, as well as my reasoning for each of those picks, as well as a dark horse in each weight class (these aren't necessarily guys that I believe are top 3 candidates, but rather guys that I believe will place well above their ranking when we get to the state finals). Feel free to argue my picks, and maybe throw some other potential dark horses out there. 106: Jeffrey Bailey, Evan Dickey, Evan Seng This became a very interesting weight class after Evan Dickey saw his #1 ranking go away at Team State after a loss to Toby Billerman. Since then, Billerman has taken two losses of his own, one to Preston haines, and a convincing revenge match from Dickey. While Jeffrey Bailey has not wrestled many of the top competitors at this weight class this year, I believe he has what it takes to win it all, and with an impressive second period tech fall over #23 E'Shawn Tolbert, my thoughts were definitely reinforced. I like Evan Seng over Toby Billerman for the third place spot, however, I think that both these guys could very easily find themselves in the first place match. Dark Horse: Ashton Jackson I'm going to try my best to keep my LaPorte bias out of these predictions, but I truly believe that Jackson could be a top 4 guy when the time comes. He has had very impressive wins during the season, such as a dominating fall over #8 Tanner Tishner and a 18-6 major decision over #12 Johnny Cortez, and has only lost to #9 at 113 Anthony Bahl, and a hiccup against #18 Jalen May. Don't count Jackson out against anybody in the state. 113: Alex Cottey, Isaac Ruble, Kyrel Leavell With Logan Miller out, we won't get to see the clash of returning state champs in Miller and Cottey, but don't count Ruble out either. You would definitely think that after a year of training, and the sting of losing under the lights, that he isn't going to give up so easy. Freshman Kyrel Leavell is also somebody I wouldn't count out to make it under the lights, as he has been impressive all year. #5 Hayden Brady is another high level competitor I could see making the top 3 this year. Dark Horse: Hayden DeMarco #10 Hayden DeMarco has proven himself to be very dangerous, taking out former #1 at 106 Evan Dickey at Team State. He also has many other quality wins, and I believe he could place quite high this year. That might come down to who wins the East Chicago Semi-State between him and #9 Anthony Bahl. 120: Sergio Lemley, Logan Frazier, Cole Ross Sergio Lemley seems to be the big dog in this weight class, as he is the only one with a national ranking, but I wouldn't call it a lock either. I believe that Logan Frazier has what it takes to push Sergio in the first place match, and possibly dethrone him under the lights. #3 Lane Gilbert is ranked above Cole Ross, claiming a 4-2 decision over him this season, but Ross is a senior, while Gilbert is a sophomore, and I believe that factor could give Ross a little extra juice to win that match. #5 Preston Teusch, #6 Aiden Sprague, and #7 Braxton Vest are also very capable wrestlers, and could very easily claim that 3rd place spot, or even more than that. Dark Horse: Zar Walker #17 Zar Walker sure has some footsteps to follow, and I think he's done a very good job thus far during his freshman year season. His only two losses are to #14 Justin Puckett, and #7 Braxton Vest, both by three points, and I think that Walker could most definitely reverse those outcomes when the time comes. 126: Zeke Seltzer, Brady Ison, Cheaney Schoeff Zeke Seltzer is one of the few wrestlers in the state that many might consider a lock, and for good reason, as he is ranked #5 in the country right now. The big story of this weight class, however, is the rivalry between #2 Brady Ison and #3 Cheaney Schoeff. Ison leads the series 2-0, but their last encounter at sectionals a few days ago ended in an overtime bout, and it should show that Schoeff could very easily take down Ison on any given day. Wrestlers like #4 Bryce Lowery and #5 Sam Goin could also very well claim one of these top 3 spots and break up this exciting rivalry. Dark Horse: Landon Bertsch Undefeated on the year, I would imagine that #9 Landon Bertsch is hungry this year, and is looking to finally break through to the second day of the state tournament, and even make a good run on that second day as well, after two years of taking losses Friday night. Throw Bertsch right into the mix with Ison, Schoeff, Lowery, and Goin, as guys that could make a deep run this year. 132: Ian Heath, Alec Freeman, Aiden Torres This weight class is WILD. Making predictions for this weight class is a very tough thing to do, as there are so many quality guys that could make a deep run in this weight class, with no clear #1 in my opinion. I like Ian Heath winning it all this year, as he has made it to the show every year in his high school career such far, and is able to compete with anybody. However, let's not forget Alec Freeman's stellar season, in which he has taken out plenty of high level guys, such as #4 Kysen Montgomery, #6 Jack Coyle (16-3!), #3 at 126 Cheaney Schoeff, and #9 David Pierson. I think that sophomore Aiden Torres is very capable of winning it all as well, but not including himself, the top NINE guys in this weight class are seniors, and I think everybody in the top nine can win this weight class. Dark Horse: Cole Solomey #10 Cole Solomey is just outside of the top nine guys I mentioned earlier, but I think that Solomey could also make a run to the top of the podium, as he lost to #3 Aiden Torres only 3-1, and is a returning placer himself. 138: Jesse Mendez, Blake Boarman, Delaney Ruhlman Jesse Mendez is good. Very good. Most people would consider him to be a lock, and I would probably agree. But you have #3 Blake Boarman, who won a state title last year, and you'd think that he would be looking for another. He could've dropped to 132, or bumped to 145, and possibly won his second state title there. But here he is, at 138, and I think it was on purpose. But then you have #2 Delaney Ruhlman, only a sophomore, and was only a qualifier last year, three weight classes below. And this season, he goes and claims a MAJOR decision against Boarman, the returning state champion at this weight class. I think there is a chance, a good chance at that, that Mendez will roll through this weight class. But I also think there's a chance that it's not gonna be that easy. I am excited to see who wrestles Jesse under the lights, and if they could threaten Jesse's third consecutive title. Dark Horse: Colton Roberts #18 Colton Roberts has a decent number of losses on this season. However, when you look at these losses, you can see that he has been challenged many times this season against some of the best in the state, and he has put up a fight in all of those challenges, losing by only one point to #6 Diesel Duncan, and decision losses to both Delaney Ruhlman and Blake Boarman. Don't be surprised if you see Roberts competing for a medal this year. 145: Logan Wagner, Hayden Watson, Jaden Reynolds This is another weight class where there is definitely not a clear winner. Both Jaden Reynolds and Logan Wagner have had awesome seasons, and their only losses on the season are to each other. Hayden Watson is a guy that I think could definitely beat both of them, however, and I'm predicting that he does end up getting that win. Don't forget about #4 Cody Goodwin, who is also a state title contender, and could beat any of these three, as shown with a mere 3-1 loss to Watson. Dark Horse: Brady McKivitz It surprises me to see #25 Brady McKivitz down so low, because I feel like he most certainly has the tools to make it to the show, and even place. He has 3-0 and 4-0 losses to Goodwin and Watson, respectively, and has wins over #9 Blaze Garcia and #7 at 138 Luke Goodwin, so I think he has the tools to make it far. He did take a loss at sectionals to UR Zach Wilson, but he has beaten him earlier in the season, and I expect him to avenge that loss down the road. 152: Javen Estrada, Matt Koontz, Riley Rust Matt Koontz has wrestled 132, 138, 145, and 152 this season, and it's surprising to see him settle at the heaviest of these weights. However, he has stuck both Riley Rust, and Javen Estrada, so he is no joke despite going up so much weight. However, aside from the loss to Koontz, Estrada has been extremely dominant this year, pinning #6 Brock Ellis early in the season, and claiming many more state ranked wins. #1 JaJuan Anderson is also a serious threat at this weight class, but he has not seen either Estrada or Koontz this season so far, and had one encounter with #4 Riley Rust, who he beat in overtime. Riley Rust has beaten Anderson in the past though, and both of these wrestlers last year were probably not on many people's radar, when they blew through the state tournament, and met in the semis, in which JaJuan lost an overtime match to Alec Viduya to claim second, while Rust was stuck by Reynolds to place 4th. In other words, these guys are historically ready to go when the big show comes. Other possible contenders for a top 3 spot are #5 J Conway, who is undefeated on the year, #6 Brock Ellis, who has taken a few lumps this year, but is nonetheless a great wrestler that should not be overlooked, and #7 Tyler Conley, who can compete with anybody in the state. Dark Horse: Scott Fitts #22 Scott Fitts was a state qualifier his freshman year, and has not been able to make it back to the show for another shot. However, despite being ranked so low, he wrestled a 3-1 match against the #1 guy in the weight class, showing that he has the capability to hang with anybody in the state. 160: Brody Baumann, Robert Major, Orlando Cruz This is probably my favorite weight class, simply because there are so many dominant wrestlers here that have what it takes to break into the top three. Robert Major has dominated everybody he has wrestled this year, with the exception of #4 Kade Law, who he beat 7-4. However, I personally have been very impressed with Brody Baumann, who has also dominated everybody he has wrestled, including a 20-5 technical fall over #6 Tyler Jones. #3 Andrew Wilson started the season looking practically untouchable, earning wins over Kade Law, Orlando Cruz, and Tyler Jones, but eventually Kade Law avenged his loss, and Robert Major beat him 6-0. It might be a bold prediction, but I like Orlando Cruz outplacing both Kade Law and Andrew Wilson this year, but of course, this weight could go drastically different, with guys like the previously mentioned Tyler Jones, #7 Tyler Turley, #8 AJ Steenbeke, and #9 Jordan Fulks. It should be worth mentioning that both Turley and Fulks spent time this year as the #1 wrestler in the weight class, so that should show you how stacked this weight class is. Dark Horse: Landon Buchanan #10 Landon Buchanan has never made it to the Bank, but that doesn't mean that he can't hang with the best. In fact, his lone loss this season is to #2 at 170 Pate Eastin, and that match went into double overtime. Buchanan can most certainly be a top 3 wrestler if he wrestles well. 170: Bryer Hall, Tyler Fuqua, Pate Eastin Bryer Hall has been a high level wrestler for a long time now, placing his freshman year, getting upset in the ticket round his sophomore year, and earning a runner up placement last year. It most definitely seems like this year is the year for Hall to win. However, there is plenty of depth in this weight class, and with that, plenty of wrestlers that can challenge Hall for the top spot. Tyler Fuqua is an exciting wrestler that can put anybody on his back, and I think that Fuqua will be the guy to wrestle Hall under the lights, although I'm not ready to say that he will be able to beat Hall, although anything can happen. Pate Eastin can also challenge both these wrestlers, and is most certainly a title contender at this weight class. But talk about the amount of talented wrestlers in this weight! #4 Brodie Porter, #5 John Purdy, #6 Sam Morrill, and many more wrestlers that could challenge for a top 3 spot. I am very excited for this weight class to go down in three weeks. Dark Horse: Codei Khawaja I'm gonna be honest, I have never heard of #11 Codei Khawaja before this season. But Khawaja had shown that he can put points on the board against high level wrestlers, as shown with a pair of major decisions against #14 Blake Wiedner and #22 Van Skinner. I think Khawaja can get on the podium this year. 182: Drake Buchanan, Gavin Layman, Aiden Warren I remember earlier this season when people were curious about the matchup between #1 Aiden Warren and #2 Drake Buchanan. Then, the matchup finally happened and, well, Buchanan PINNED him. And he hasn't looked back, with falls over #25 Jaden Durnil, #12 Keon Sullivan, and a 25-8 tech fall over #6 Jalen Ward. I'm not sure if anybody can compete with Drake Buchanan, but I wouldn't count anyone out yet. #4 Gavin Layman is undefeated on the year, and has not really had any close matches himself, beating #4 at 195 Johnny Parker 5-0, and pinning #8 Colin Kwiatkowski at sectionals. I think Gavin Layman gets the better of Aiden Warren, but I think Aiden Warren will secure the 3rd place spot, although #3 Gabe Sollars and #5 Cody Timmerman are talented wrestlers too that could contend for that spot, and maybe even see themselves under the lights. Gabe Sollars eliminated Layman last year Friday night, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Sollars take that match this year. Dark Horse: Keon Sullivan #12 Keon Sullivan has taken a few losses this season, but he also had a 3-2 match with Aiden Warren, showing that he can compete with the best. From a school like Warren Central, I wouldn't put it past Sullivan to wrestle deep into the medal rounds. 195: Hayden Filipovich, Juan Grange, Eli Pack This might be one of my bolder predictions, but I'm not really sure about this weight class to be honest. Eli Pack has stood as the #1 ranked wrestler at 195 all year, but has not wrestled a single ranked opponent all year, and I can't imagine that the best time to get your first test of the year is the state tournament. We will get to see Pack wrestle #3 Conner Barket at semi-state, so we will see if he is worthy of that #1 ranking. However, this is a way too early prediction, so unfortunately I will have to go with my gut here. Juan Grange is somebody that I think has been proving himself to be better and better all year, with pins against #8 Matt Lepper and #10 Gage DeMarco. I am making a bold prediction that Grange will take out Pack, and Barket too, since all three are at the same semi-state. That'll be a semi-state bracket to watch. Hayden Filipovich doesn't have many ranked wins either, but both of his ranked wins were quick falls, so you could assume that he has a good shot to win it all. But who knows, Connor Barket, or #4 Johnny Parker could claim any of these spots as well, to be honest, and #6 Harris Eason and #7 Brach Carrington should not be overlooked either. Dark Horse: Ibrahim Khaoucha #16 Ibrahim Khaoucha is better than this ranking implies. He is a former state qualifier, and was a runner-up at the always tough Al Smith classic. It looks like earlier in the year he look a weird loss, but I don't think that reflects the level that this wrestler is at. Expect to see this guy on the podium. 220: Evan Bates, Tristan Ruhlman, Jason Streck Evan Bates and Tristan Ruhlman is a match that I am very excited to see. Both of these wrestlers have seen themselves in the FloWrestling national rankings, with Evan Bates being ranked as high as #5 in the country after his runner-up finish at Fargo Nationals, but is now at #13, and Tristan Ruhlman seeing himself at #19 in the country, after beating a nationally ranked opponent during an excellent run at IHPO. While Evan Bates is the clear favorite, Tristan Ruhlman is known for exceeding his expectations, as seen last year at Al Smith, when he stuck Garrett's Clayton Fielden, who was #1 in the state at the time, and was also in and out of the FloWrestling national rankings. Jason Streck looks to be the clear #3, and most certainly has the tools to place even higher. #4 David Guhl also had a 6-2 match with Evan Bates earlier this year, so he is definitely a wrestler that you cannot count out. As much as I would like to see Bates and Ruhlman, it would be awesome to see an upset happen. Dark Horse: Jeff McClure #10 Jeff McClure should make a deep run Saturday night. He has 4 losses on the season, which includes a 6-3 loss against David Guhl, a 13-3 loss against #8 Aataeveon Jordan, and two losses against Isaiah Street, who is not competing in the state tournament. Although his loss against Jordan was not close, his loss against Guhl was, and I think that his state run will depend on which version of himself shows up when the time comes. 285: Braydon Erb, Reeve Muncie, Leighton Jones Braydon Erb and Reeve Muncie wrestled mid season, and Erb got the better of him, in a 3-1 win. To be honest, I think this match can go either way, but I think that I'm gonna go chalk with this matchup. Leighton Jones has not wrestled Erb or Muncie, and he is a very talented underclassman, so it would not be out of the ordinary to see him push Muncie or Erb in the semis of the state tournament to earn his spot under the lights. The reason I am not predicting that upset is because Erb and Muncie are seniors, and I think that you wrestle a little different when it's your last go. Otherwise, I might have tried to call the upset. #4 Antone Alexander is a previous qualifier, and his lone loss is a 3-1 loss against Jones, so don't count him out. #5 Jacob Johnson is another previous qualifier that could make some noise. Lastly, I'd like to note that #6 Hunter Whitenack has pinned every single opponent thus far in his junior year campaign, and this kid is a force to be reckoned with. He is a full 285 pound wrestler, and I'm pretty sure he cuts weight to make heavyweight, so watch out for this giant. Dark Horse: Brock Donati UR Brock Donati has taken some losses this season for sure, but it should be noted that he has been on the state rankings multiple times this season, and more importantly, he had a 5-2 match earlier in the year with Muncie. To be honest, I think that heavyweight is one of the most unpredictable weight classes there are, but I think that Donati has the tools to find himself at the Bank, and maybe even on the podium.

  3. The North Regional promises top-notch Indiana talent, fireworks and what could be an interesting team race. Since spectators will not be allowed—this year only—I will omit snarky comments about the tournament being moved from Castle. 106- The wee ones will start us off with a bang. Castle’s freshman phenom, Leighton Ramsey, tops the bracket with a 29-0 record. Trouble lurks in the semis, when he faces the wily junior from North Posey, Blake Zirkelbach. For their trouble, the winner will be rewarded by a date with Mater Dei’s fourth-ranked Evan Seng. Whoa, Nellie! 113- I like the semis match up of Heritage Hills’ Garrett Forler and Jared Dunn of Princeton. Mater Dei’s Reed Egli graduated from gladiator school this season and looks to top the Huskie podium. 120- Central’s Ayden Amento put together a brilliant season and a 23-4 record. The bad news is that three of his losses are to two, Mater Dei wrestlers. The worse news is that 3x SQ Cole Ross is on the other side of the bracket. I do not expect a Ross meltdown in this all-Central sectional final. 126- There will be upsets at 126! Memorial’s Keegan Williams tops the bracket and carries a 27-1 record for Larry Mattingly’s Tigers. Williams will face a savvy and improving wrestler in the form of Reitz’s Zach Traylor. On the other side of the bracket, sectional champ Jacob Pierre will square off against Harrison’s Kaliq Boyd. Pierre is studied and measured while Boyd is wide-open. At the end of the day, I expect Pierre to try to avenge an early-season loss to Williams. I could be wrong on every pick at 126! 132- Two words: Alec Freeman. The MD senior is ranked number one in Indiana and looks tougher each week. Freeman will take the center mat against the winner of Harrison’s Devin Heneisen and North Posey’s Camden Lupfer. 138- It is hard to bet against MD’s returning State Champ, Blake Boarman, so I will not. I like the semis match at the bottom of the bracket where Memorial’s Eli Weurth will face Nick Akers of North Posey. 145- I expect another all-Central sectional final at 145 where MD’s Ashton Hayhurst will square off against Mt. Vernon’s Chris Newman. Hayhurst dished out a beat-down at the sectional. Can Newman re-group and crack the Hayhurst code? 152- Memorial’s Aiden Farmer tops the northern half of the bracket and brings a 23-4 record to the quadrangle palace. MD’s Scott Fitts sports an 11-6 record against a slate of who’s who. Fitts will square off against a solid Pat Mayes of Boonville. If Fitts can get past Mayes, he will get an opportunity to avenge an early-season loss to Farmer. 160- In the marquee match of the tournament, Boonville’s Jordan Fulks will meet MD’s Brody Baumann. Both are returning State Placers, technically solid, dynamic and in supreme condition. Somebody put ‘em on a leash! 170- The adrenalin rush continues at 170. Castle’s sophomore sensation, John Purdy, sports a perfect 24-0 record for Bob Harmon’s Knights. Purdy will need to keep his eyes on the road, as he will face MD’s 17-3 Blake Weidner in the semis. Mt. Vernon’s Brady Hook will coast to the final. Hook is slick and smart; the final should be epic! 182- Caught your breath yet? Too late! In a battle of unbeatens, I expect Castle’s 30-0 Evan Reff to go heads up with MD’s 19-0 Gabe Sollars. Castle and MD did not meet in this COVID-infected season, so we have no history on which to draw. Someone help me out, here! 195- This is a tough pick. Castle’s Jason Palamarchuck rolled up a 24-5 record, en route to his sectional title. Danger lurks in the first round in the form of Reitz’s Reid Brickey. Brickey defaulted his third-place match in the sectional. If Brickey is healthy for the regional, you could see an upset at the EVSC School Board’s monument to themselves. Should Palamarchuck get past Brickey, he will face Mt. Vernon’s very tough, 26-2 Blake Ritzert. Slobber Knocker City! Another great first round match will go down when Tecumseh’s Jared McKinley faces MD’s Clay Martin. McKinley missed out on a sectional title by a 7-6 loss to Palamarchuck. Sophomore Clay Martin is a 12-1 wrestler—that no one wants to wrestle. While there is a lot of drama in the lead-up, there will be not be much drama in the final. North Posey’s Wyatt Willman is 25-0 and is the class of the field. You will see Ritzert vs. Willman, Part II. 220- Memorial’s Kelton Farmer tops the northern half of the bracket. In the semis, he will meet MD’s Nick Boots. MD coach Greg Schaefer typically has his team peaking in February; Boots will look to avenge an early season loss. Reitz’s Logan Huggins, with his 27-0 record, will skate to the final. 285- Boonville senior, Cordell Heuring stomped the field at the Castle sectional and tops the bracket. Heuring should not look past North’s senior, Gage Sales. The Huskie is 23-2 and wrestling on his home mat. MD junior James Ralph has blossomed this season and should walk to the final. Look for Ralph to top the podium. Top Semi-Final Matches: 106- Zirkelbach vs. Ramsey; 113- Forler vs. Dunn; 126- Williams vs. Traylor, Pierre vs. Boyd; 132- Lupfer vs. Heneisen; 138- Weurth vs. Akers; 152- Fitts vs. Mayes; 170- Purdy vs. Weidner; 195- Palamarchuck/Brickey vs. Ritzert; 220- Boots vs. Farmer; 285- Heuring vs. Sales Top Final Matches: 106- Zirkelbach vs. Seng; 126- Williams/Traylor vs. Pierre/Boyd; 152- Farmer vs. Fitts; 160- Baumann vs. Fulks; 170- Weidner/Purdy vs. Hook; 182- Reff v. Sollars Team Race: This is a race for second. Mater Dei has zero weak spots, will put at least ten in the finals and should advance all 14 to the semi state. I like North Posey for second place, Castle for third and Boonville fourth.

I haven't really been following wrestling that much this past year. But I always enjoy this time of year when the tournaments begin. The excitement in the air, fans screaming (thanks IHSAA for taking that away), and wrestlers stepping up and battling for the illustrious prize of a State Championship. Living down here in the southwestern part of the state we always know Mater Dei is going to win the Central Sectional. I believe this was their 45th straight title. But the Castle Sectional is known to fluctuate more between its winner. Castle has won it for the last several years, but Boonville has been giving them a hell of a run for the last 2-3 years. I was there last year when Boonville was winning all day, only to watch it slip away in the final matches of the championship rounds. But this year Boonville pulled it off. They again were leading all day and were able to hold off Castle as they made a last chance effort in the finals. Boonville had 8 kids in finals and qualified 13 wrestlers for the North Regionals. I saw where Mater Dei had all 14 of their wrestlers going, but besides Boonville with 13, Heritage Hills was the next closest with 12, then Castle with 10, and North Posey with 9. Boonville's program has been battling it out for years now down here in the Dirty South and I for one am glad to see them pull off this championship run. Congratulations to all the Pioneer wrestlers and fans (they're an energetic bunch). And congratulations to the co-head coaches, Coach Wilke and Coach Marchand on capturing their first Sectional title. Our community has been watching you guys develop that program for years now. Job well done!

  5. Without knowing all the background and discussions.. Accepting transfers while at the same time denying a young man and his family from transferring away from your school seems very bush-league. You may hate it in the short term as a coach, but in the end you can never feel too bad letting a young man participate in a sport and your reputation will be better in the long run

  8. Yes, to my understanding he didn’t like the coaching so he transferred to New Prairie where he’s close to the rtc and staff is more enjoyable. Then penn denied him his sectional run. Even though he got all the required weigh ins after cutting weight, and required practices. New prairie tried all they could to let a kid wrestle but penn basically said nah.

  9. Peru (Now Maconaquah) 113 is pretty tough One side of the bracket is: Jared Brooks (31-1) - Wabash SS#3 State #15 - Returning state placewinner Harvey Barr (24-3) - Kokomo SS#5 State #24 Other side of the bracket is: Anthony Martin (18-2) - Western SS#3 State #25 - Returning state qualifier Ethan Holloway (27-2) - Rochester SS#6 State #22

  11. I am tired of the hypocrisy. Recently a very talented wrestler was declared ineligible to participate in the state wrestling tournament. This did not only deny a precious year to a high school kid, but also all of Indiana eager to see one of the nations finest improving his craft for all of Indiana’s enjoyment. The reason for this travesty was due to Penn finding a loophole in the Indiana by-laws and exploiting it. Why? No one knows for sure, but what is for sure is a great ambassador for the sport we love will not be showcased on Indiana’s grandest stage. So why is this hypocrisy? Penn has 4 wrestlers from out of state competing for them. A wrestler from Texas, Michigan, Illinois, and South Carolina all of a sudden transferred to Penn this year. Yet there has been no investigation, despite overwhelming evidence of recruiting. The reason for this is simple, most adults realize these kids only have a limited time in school and if they want to leave to a different school, they let them because it is in the best interest for the kid. This happens often in northern Indiana, I am sure also throughout the state and all over the country. In fact, many, many, wrestlers from various programs in northern Indiana have transferred to join Penn. Penn accepts them wholeheartedly. No one fought the transfer because why punish the kid. However, when Penn loses a kid the first thing they do is block the kid. Blatant Hypocrisy.

  13. Going to agree with IU89 here, I Coached Gabe at Tulsa Nationals to a All-American back in the day . Kid is a and on a mission. I’m not Mater Dei fan but a HUGE Gabe Sollars Fan . I think you missed one here bud . You’ll become a witness soon enough . I’ll respect your write up. Nice job by the way .

  14. Sleep on Gabe Sollars at 182 at your peril. He destroys whomever is in front of him. We’ll see him under the lights on Saturday night in a couple weeks in Indy.

  15. 160 Everman and Boe look to be on a crash course for a rematch. Cicciarelli will be an important factor if the bulldogs want to have a good day.. and rounding out the situation will be a tough 1st round match between Keith and Lewis. Can the small school take out the big school Giant? ? 160- is interesting to me, watched the 3 Avon Sectional finalists. All tough as nails and can very well switch spots any giving Saturday. Boe stands out to me, he looked like the season wrestler out of the group . Cicciarelli has a motor of high speed only, only hope to slow him down . Keith technique is improving, travels a lot in the off season and can play spoiler . Everman has been wrestling since he been little, season wrestler . Love his heart and never give up attitude. 17. 2010 represented a white-knuckled sectional for the Wildcats. Reitz beat MD in the dual 36-21. It marked the first time Reitz had beaten MD in 35 years, while serving up MD's first home loss in 32 years. "I've waited for this a long time," said Reitz coach Scott Ferguson, "But even when we were ahead, I wanted our kids to keep wrestling and they did. But they also understand this is not our goal; this is only the next step. We have bigger things and bigger matches ahead of us." Greg Schaefer did not mince words. "We just flat got out-wrestled tonight," said Schaefer. "They took it to us." The Panthers continued their beat-down on Mater Dei, besting them at the SIAC tournament. "The SIAC is a nice win," said Ferguson. "But it's even more important how it sets us up for the sectional." On paper, the sectional was another horse race; Reitz had five top-seeds and three number-two seeds, while Mater Dei had five top-seeds and two second seeds. The week leading up to the sectional, Mater Dei had no concern of their 34-year winning streak. The talk was all about Reitz. More importantly, beating Reitz. “It was no secret they were the team to beat, so that’s where our focus was,” recalled Schaefer. The focus paid dividends. The ‘Cats built up steam in the semis while Reitz sputtered. The Wildcats continued their march through the consolation and final to pull away and capture the 35th consecutive sectional. “In a tournament like this, you can’t take anything for granted,” said Schaefer. “We had so many good wins, but you can’t stop. You just have to follow it with another.” Scott Ferguson was clearly disappointed. “We thought it was ours to lose,” he said. “Our goal was to set ourselves up for the semi state by winning everything we could here. We lost some close matches, some we were banking on, and didn’t get some bonus points in places we expected. “We knew it wasn’t going our way when that disqualification gave them some points.” The disqualification was a bizarre, 189 pound match between Harrison’s Cameron Satterfield and Mater Dei freshman Nathan Wright. Satterfield had a lead and control of the match when he was charged with a penalty point for shoving Wright after they were out of bounds. The Mater Dei fans booed the errant behavior. The crowd reaction incensed Satterfield. He proceeded to have an animated discussion with the referee. Although his coaches pleaded with him to countenance his words and actions, it fell upon deaf ears. Satterfield eventually said the wrong thing to the referee and was disqualified. Wright placed fourth. Zach Henderson and Quinn Schroeder were the first titlists for the Wildcats, followed by John Sims. “Being the first team to lose to Reitz in 35 years hurt,” said Sims. “Our main concern today was just to win. We’d been losing close matches, which just isn’t like Mater Dei. We really stressed being more aggressive, really trying to pile up extra points. This was our little payback.”

  18. The New Castle semi-state traditionally features some of Indiana's top wrestlers and this year is no different. Here are some predictions for 106-145. 106 1st- Evan Dickey, Cathedral (Avenged an 8-4 loss to Billerman on Jan. 2 with a convincing 10-1 win less than two weeks later) 2nd- Toby Billerman, Perry Meridian (Should win a tough Southport regional. Has beaten SP's Nathan Smith 4-3, 8-0 and 7-1 this year, along with 8-5 and 15-6 wins over Warren Central's Zac Dray) 3rd- Nathan Smith, Southport (I like him to beat WC's Zac Dray in the semis at Southport regional and find a better draw at New Castle) 4th- Tommy Frazier, Zionsville Others to consider - Zac Dray, Warren Central; Oliver Wilson, North Central; Mat Benson, Hamilton SE 113 1st- Alex Cottey, Perry Meridian (3x state finalist, nothing much more to say) 2nd- Kyrel Leavell, Warren Central 3rd- Dylan Driver, Westfield (Could get dicey if Leavell lands in same group of 4) 4th- Aden Reyes, Cathedral (see ^^^) Others to consider - Romello Williams, Anderson; Isaac Ward, Carmel 120 1st- Braxton Vest, Westfield 2nd- Carlton Perry, Warren Central 3rd- Dillon Graham, Cathedral 4th- Eitan Halevi, Carmel Others to consider - Keaton Morton, Perry Meridian; Gavyn Whitehead, New Castle 126 (fight for 2nd) 1st- Zeke Seltzer, Cathedral 2nd- Bryce Lowery, Roncalli 3rd- Elijah Anthony, Frankfort 4th- Blake Wolf, East Central Others to consider - Jeremiah Henderson, Lawrence North; Dason Tichenor, Warren Central 132 1st- David Pierson, Warren Central (Beat New Pal's White 9-3 at sectionals) 2nd- Brac Hooper, Carmel 3rd- Anthony Hughes, Lawrence North 4th- Christian White, New Palestine Others to consider - Brevan Thrine, New Castle; Drew Willis, Roncalli 138 (feels like a wide open weight class) 1st- Hudson Harreld, Zionsville 2nd- Luke Goodwin, Southport 3rd- Kody Glithero, Roncalli 4th- Jared Brown, Pendleton Heights Others to consider - Alec McLaren, Westfield; Jeremiah Hernandez, Warren Central; Luke Gonzalez, Cathedral; Corbin Walston, Lawrenceburg 145 (Wagner in his own class at this weight) 1st- Logan Wagner, Zionsville 2nd- Max Naselroad, Alexandria 3rd- Jeivan Ross, Warren Central 4th- Eli Otto, South Dearborn Others to consider - Brady McKivitz, Perry Meridian (runner-up finish at sectionals sets him up for a likely 3rd place finish at regionals, tougher draw at SS); Zach Wilson, Roncalli; Tyler Lindamood, Fishers Will create a separate thread for 152-285. Thoughts on the above?

  19. Cross bracket the two sectionals that feed into the regional. for example Mishawka sectional and Plymouth sectional feed into Penn regional so top bracket Mishawaka 1 vs Plymouth 4 plymouth 2 vs mishawka 3 bottom bracket mishawka 2 vs Plymouth 3 plymouth 1 vs mishawka 4

  24. Yeah, it's not a matter of trying to hide the info. The Genius ratings themselves are my creation and something that I like to be intuitive and accurate. If the data points for single teams are less than half the norm--and with many unusual results sprinkled in--certain teams won't be where they intuitively should be. Normally, I can go through and cherry pick removals or adjustments where Castle only brought 7 of their guys to the Mooresville Holiday Classic or the Elkhart tournament used a non-traditional scoring system or whatever else. This season, it just wasn't feasible. So it's not work I can take quite as much pride in on a single-team level. For doing sectional and regional categories, however, there are hundreds of points of immediate connection between sites and thousands of points of secondary connection. Having some duals with less than genuine results gets smoothed out completely by the large amount of overall data points. With a single team, if they're missing 7 guys for a big Saturday event, we could be talking about 25% of their results for the whole season in some cases being "corrupted". This doesn't matter in terms of a sectional's strength, because most of those "corrupted" results balance out by benefitting their sectional/regional counterparts--or represents only 1 of hundreds of first-contact non-sectional/regional data points if there's a non-neighbor opponent involved. With all that said, let me get it into a sortable format with the SoS data in place and I'll post it for people to look at. It's not garbage--just not the standard I like to post for single teams wanting to look at how they stack up. Here you go (remember SoS is just the average of the strength of opponents from the results we had available): Genius 2020-21 (covid raw).xlsx

Agree here, remember Illinois and IU recently? Granted , Indiana is no where as deep as Purdue is right now but matchups make a big difference in dual competition. Just wait till Big Tens or NCAA, Boilermakers will be fine.

  38. Someone went to a lot of trouble preventing arguably the states best wrestler the opportunity to compete. Sounded like the kid was just looking for a better situation, with a coach that had more interest in helping him than following around a girl that graduated years ago and living off her success.

  41. It is kind of crazy, im pretty sure penn got 2/3 out of state transfers in this year, but when a kid wants to leave there and go elsewhere there is an issue? something doesn’t make sense in this whole situation on penn’s part. i guess its okay to recruit until one of your kids leave & then you have to ruin his season... i have no idea how blocking a kid from wrestling can make them feel good in any type of way.

I think it's different with each Wrestler..I think their work ethic and attitude are the main thing imho.. All the potential in the world is irrelevant if the mindset isn't there.. It's a collective set of things that go into it and it's impossible to put an exact answer to this very loaded question but I like the conversation and dialogue... I think that the journey getting to being an AA is actually part of the unknown that makes coaching fun, challenging and rewarding because there's so many variables the go into achieving that status.. I've seen so many guys that you'd think would be a see a shew in state champion and eventual successful in college.. Then life throws things at them and things happen.. Then I've seen guys that well over achieved their perceived potential... There's such a huge leap in evey facet that can happen between college and HS where either guys Flourish and become the best them possible and some that are really successful don't pan out like many thought they would.. So that brings me back to knowing what to look for when trying to make an educated prediction on a Wrestlers success..If they got that dog in Em have showed to compete in every position regardless of the outcome, have great work ethic, attitude and GRADES then you have a great candidate to succeed at that level.. Not everybody is gonna be Zain or Snyder but remember there's 7 Other podium spots to be had and being an Academic all American is another dynamic to it.. If you're looking at a guy and he's a ACADEMIC All state in HS that right there answers many of the questions you have cuz regardless if he medals or not he's successful in the arena I life and that'll make you more proud than any !As long as we as coaches keep evolving, contributing and learning ourselves the rest will take care of itself... At IU they are changing the culture, that process breeds success, then when a kid arrives to college regardless of his accolades he will be the small fish in the big pond again and have no choice but to get better, The level of comp in that room will make any guy that comes in the room be there Best self possible.. Keep doing what you're doing brother and elevating the level in your area and getting us some guys that can go to IU and show out! It takes the entire Wrestling community to thrive for betterment of the sport and that I'm itself will keep our state of Indiana rising up the ranks even higher when it comes to Not only Quality wrestling but quantity as well.. As you know PA and OH don't only have Elite talent At the top they have depth behind their great guys.. That breeds success having so much quality wrestling in state comp..Our HS scene is really pushing out tons of College success and the RTCs and academies are huge part of that helping prep our youth for the best.. If everybody that don't have RTCs can get their youth program going like your do at Garrett btw your looking out bro, along with many other successful HS teams if all sizes that'll keep helping raise the level across the state.. e gotta ensure our Youth programs are on point to promote a culture at all levels in a Wrestling program.
