When Asa was going through the recruiting process. Every college coach we talked to did not give two cents what he done in HS wrestling in Indiana (State) . All they ask how is Grades, What you wanna do while in College ? What the school offers in that field ? More Grades questions. National stuff was congrats on your placement. Not one question asking about Fargo, if your going or not . They know what the athletes do in HS . Seems to me colleges focus on a needed weight they need to fill. If your beating high school kids on National level there good shot your beating them on College level . Kid gotta stay focus on his grades #1, #2 wrestling . sum it up 1. Grades 2. Grades 3. Grades 4. we see your kid here at this weight 5. Grades 6. Grades

From my personal situation being around great to elite college wrestlers, they all seem to be in the upper level on the IQ scores. Has to be something to that. = success on the mat.

  7. Hopefully the IHSAA does the right thing and moves the Mishawaka sectional then. I'm over over-reaching health departments on power grabs. My county just went orange, but the Health dept says we have to stay at red level for 2 additional weeks, it's ludicrous. It's just a bunch of old bitties that have been reduced to finding bugs and warm food their whole lives that now feel like they have a since of purpose. Take a hike Dorothy. Let counties, communities, and schools that support this type of nazism get hit where it counts - in their financial pants and once the pandemic is over let them continue to suffer as new trends and habits are formed.

  8. In an email read yesterday, the IHSAA stated that as of now all 224 wrestlers will not be allowed in Bankers Life at the same time. This makes absolutely no sense to me and would love to hear the justification. Look at these numbers... Bankers Life holds 20,000 people at full capacity. If they were told that they could only use 25%... that would be 5,000. 224 Wrestlers 896 in fans (4 tickets per wrestler on Friday, even less needed for Saturday) 448 in Coaching tickets (2 coaches per kid. Obviously this number is higher than it needs to be due to the fact that the same coaches will be coaching multiple kids. Just humor me on the number for now) That is a total of 1,568. That leaves 3,432 in workers from Media, Officials, Gate keepers, Table help, etc...... No "Parade of Champions" all on the floor at the same time...I get that, but football State finals had fans, Colts have fans...Let the young men have their day with their families!!! Just my 1/2 cent on a Tuesday!

  14. Just let the #1County handle all the media. Let The Berne Witness webcast and channel 92.7 FM handle the radio broadcast for the entire state. Both do great work covering the sport for this area. It's nice to have the HSWW show as well.

  15. As Simpson's coach and a creative writing teacher, this Emily Dickinson poem best conveys my answer. I many times thought Peace had come When peace was far away, As wrecked men deem they sight the land When far at sea they stay. And struggle slacker, but to prove, As hopelessly as I, That many the fictitious shores Before the harbor lie.

  16. I’ve been trying to follow Hobart since I saw them at team state, and I know Simpson is a dog, but he’s ranked at 170 in the semi state, and 182 in the state rankings. Which one will he wrestle?

I think it's different with each Wrestler..I think their work ethic and attitude are the main thing imho.. All the potential in the world is irrelevant if the mindset isn't there.. It's a collective set of things that go into it and it's impossible to put an exact answer to this very loaded question but I like the conversation and dialogue... I think that the journey getting to being an AA is actually part of the unknown that makes coaching fun, challenging and rewarding because there's so many variables the go into achieving that status.. I've seen so many guys that you'd think would be a see a shew in state champion and eventual successful in college.. Then life throws things at them and things happen.. Then I've seen guys that well over achieved their perceived potential... There's such a huge leap in evey facet that can happen between college and HS where either guys Flourish and become the best them possible and some that are really successful don't pan out like many thought they would.. So that brings me back to knowing what to look for when trying to make an educated prediction on a Wrestlers success..If they got that dog in Em have showed to compete in every position regardless of the outcome, have great work ethic, attitude and GRADES then you have a great candidate to succeed at that level.. Not everybody is gonna be Zain or Snyder but remember there's 7 Other podium spots to be had and being an Academic all American is another dynamic to it.. If you're looking at a guy and he's a ACADEMIC All state in HS that right there answers many of the questions you have cuz regardless if he medals or not he's successful in the arena I life and that'll make you more proud than any !As long as we as coaches keep evolving, contributing and learning ourselves the rest will take care of itself... At IU they are changing the culture, that process breeds success, then when a kid arrives to college regardless of his accolades he will be the small fish in the big pond again and have no choice but to get better, The level of comp in that room will make any guy that comes in the room be there Best self possible.. Keep doing what you're doing brother and elevating the level in your area and getting us some guys that can go to IU and show out! It takes the entire Wrestling community to thrive for betterment of the sport and that I'm itself will keep our state of Indiana rising up the ranks even higher when it comes to Not only Quality wrestling but quantity as well.. As you know PA and OH don't only have Elite talent At the top they have depth behind their great guys.. That breeds success having so much quality wrestling in state comp..Our HS scene is really pushing out tons of College success and the RTCs and academies are huge part of that helping prep our youth for the best.. If everybody that don't have RTCs can get their youth program going like your do at Garrett btw your looking out bro, along with many other successful HS teams if all sizes that'll keep helping raise the level across the state.. e gotta ensure our Youth programs are on point to promote a culture at all levels in a Wrestling program.

Another point of depth that’s hasn’t been addressed yet is its effect on recruiting. These top level recruits want to be in room with multiple practice partners that can push them at their level. This is something that is going to be harder to find at most weight classes for none top tier programs. When IU and/or PU can develop some consistent NCAA qualifiers and All American threats around a weight cluster those top recruits will become more interested in taking a shot at the school because the partners are there for them. Until then they just have to hope those recruits will take a chance on the coaching staffs abilities and interested in staying connected with their home state. Hopefully that development is occuring now and within a few more seasons these programs will have a better shot at garnering some more top recruit interest.

I have no information on why this choice was made. With that said, if your concern is covid and you keep your varsity out of the competition and enter your JV then are you going to quarantine your JV kids from your varsity for two weeks?

    Imagine if..

I echo Disco’s sentiments. He’s got 4 years of wrestling and a lot can change in his wrestling ability/passion/development. He should go where he’s comfortable and fits and has a path (note not a guarantee) to start or have an impact. The degree is the priority and to be able to get one debt free is a great start in life. With that said, I’d go to CMU. #FireUpChips

  22. The email from the IHSAA contained the following information on rule 50-4. Additionally, all requests for waivers due to COVID are due Friday, January 23, 2021. Those waivers must come from your Athletic Director to the IHSAA offices. The waiver request can be an email listing the reason for the waiver, dates of quarantine, and number of affected events. The waiver speaks to Rule 50-4 solely. Below is the rule 50-4 In order for a student to qualify for participation in the IHSAA tournament series in an Individual Sport (cross country, golf, tennis, swimming & diving, track & fi eld and wrestling) the student must have participated, during the preceding regular season in a minimum of (i) Seventy-fi ve percent (75%) of the Season Contests in which the student’s school participated, and (ii) Twenty-fi ve percent (25%) of the maximum number of authorized Season Contests in that sport. a. This requirement by the Commissioner can be waived provided the student can demonstrate that the reason the student did not participate in the minimum number of Season Contests was because of illness, injury, ineligibility or because of circumstances beyond the control of the student, such as illness, injury, the cancellation of a Contest(s) or the student’s failure to qualify for a spot on the roster. b. A waiver will not be available for students failing to participate in the minimum number of Season Contests because of the Virtual Education School rule (rule 12-6), because of the Academic rule (rule 18), because of the Transfer rule (rule 19), because of the Undue Influence rule (rule 20) or because of volunt I reached out to Mr. Faulkens, below was his response Does it (rule 50-4) apply to single sport athletes or just those doing 2 in a season? - Yes it applies to all individual sport athletes. Does an athlete with 6 qualifying weigh-ins need a waiver? - Yes. If they do not meet the 75%/25% requirements What does the general waiver request need to include? - The name of the wrestler, the grade, the events missed and the reason for missing the events. Is this new for wrestling? Essentially does it apply to us? - No, this rule is not new. Every season it is needed for kids who are injured, sick, ineligible, or due to weather cancellations, etc.

    Headgear Question

Does anyone know if this headgear is approved by IHSAA ? Our coach is getting the run around from a few different people that should be able to give an answer.

  24. Sectional and Regional schools that are allowing no fans or putting severe restrictions on fans should not be allowed to host. 2 spectators per wrestler is reasonable and should be a requirement by the IHSAA to host a sectional or regional.

  25. Let’s quit the faux-fear here. By the time everyone gets to Bankers Life, no one will know who has it, who has been vaccinated, who doesn’t give a sheet, and who can plow through a possible symptom to win a title. If you are 60 or older, don’t come if you are a fan, coach, or ref. Or, if you do, get a vaccine in the next 4.5 weeks. Otherwise, get the kids in the arena w parents or immediate family, and have a tournament. Football had 75 kids in the locker rooms together 6 different times (or a few less for 1A-3A). They spaced the loved ones perfectly with assigned seats, but no way they sterilized the locker rooms and no one cared. The pandemic is about over. IHSAA shouldn’t pump the brakes now and the wrestling community sure as heck shouldn’t give them pause. We are the best sport after all. Let’s get everyone in the arena and make moves. We are setting the bar for this fractured country. Let’s keep charging.
