Driving around the Michigan campus the other day and came across something you guys might like.

  2. Couldn't sleep so I was checking out some old wrestling videos readying for the Big Ten Tournament this weekend, and found these... You may have seen these before, but I thought they were worth a look again. The first is a news story by a Cincinnati station when Mason was 11. The 2nd after he won his first State Championship. The 3rd after he won Gold at the UWW World Championships in August.

  5. He's put on 25 pounds of muscle since his jr world title! The FS he's been training has went a long way in developing him into a better college wrestler! Scary how good he is when he's only focused only on wrestling the past few years! Unreal talent and even better young man.

    Gimson Brothers

Congratulations to the Gimson brothers on becoming AAs at 133 at the NAIA Nationals. Potential 3rd place match between them im rooting for them to make it. What an amazing first year for them at Indiana Tech.

  7. It could be my favorite finals match ever. At least it the one I always recall. Loved the late match confidence Pertov had to cut Campbell and go down 1 point knowing he could get the takedown to win it. Most guys would have tried to ride it out at that point and win in OT rather than purposely give up the lead against a top level wrestler. Also a big fan of the Eppert vs Wright State series rivalry. It’s not to often do you see that long of a series play out.

Going to be a fun semi-final either way. Indiana is in a no-lose situation with this one

  9. Every year when I go to the state finals, the bar that I set is hoping to see another match as good as Petrov vs. Campbell.

  13. well to be honest the one that came to mind to me right away was when Seltzer hit an illegal move on Bettich I believe in the Semis of state and Bettich was clearly shooken up and it looked like a possible concussion because he hit his head pretty hard. Bettich was losing pretty good and had gotten beat all year by Seltzer and he coulda layed there and took the win. If he had done so a whole lot of history would be changed. The first part that would be changed would be the 2020 team state champs would be Crown Point, the second thing would be the 120 pound state champion. also it would not allow Seltzer to have the opportunity to get 3 titles and 4x under the lights. I don't know Bettich at all but after seeing that it made me a fan for life. What I have always been told is you find out more about 1 loss about a persons character than you do after 1000 wins. Excellent Job Riley.

    Greatest of All-Time

My other thread of the Indiana Wrestling Awards has gotten some favorable responses on here as well as my social media accounts, with particular aim at my star ratings and Match of the Year picks and candidates from over the years. It's led me to ask, what matches in our state's history are some of the greatest of all-time? I have four matches that I've given five stars, three of which I saw live, and one via YouTube. Blake Maurer vs. Alex Dolly, 2003 IHSAA Individual State Championships - Finals at 171 LBS Paul Petrov vs. Brenden Campbell, 2012 IHSAA Individual State Championships - Finals at 120 LBS Cody LeCount vs. Tommy Forte, 2014 Bellmont Main Event - 145 LBS Chad Red vs. Nick Lee, 2016 IHSAA State Championships - 132 LBS What matches can you guys think of that were five stars or near so that were match of the year candidates that will go down in history?

It’s literally too hard to decide for me. I rate matches out of five stars, with a five being rare. Of those listed for MOTY, I have: Walker/Parkinson - 4.5 Stars Jones/Stuckman - 4.5 Stars Boarman/LB - 4 Stars Bryce Lowery/Chundi - 4 Stars Boe/Kervin - 4.75 Stars Egli/Conley - 4 Stars Keys/Gentry - 4 Stars Cottey/Ross - 4.25 Stars Levitz/Rodgers - 4.25 Stars WAY too close to call. Every match starts with two stars and gets rated based on competitiveness Typically 3.5 = Very Good 3.75 = Great 4/4.25= Amazing 4.5/4.75 = Instant Classic 5 = Greatest of All-Time Star ratings are just opinions as one match may be rated higher than another based on a variety of factors including skill level, competitiveness, excitement, drama, etc., but all these matches are different stylistically and all will go down as some of the most memorable in Indiana. Past Five Star Matches Blake Maurer vs. Alex Dolly - 2003 IHSAA State Finals (watched via YouTube, thought I was actually there; that’s how good it was) Paul Petrov vs. Brenden Campbell - 2012 IHSAA State Finals Cody LeCount vs. Tommy Forte - 2014 IHSAA State Finals Chad Red vs. Nick Lee - 2016 IHSAA State Finals Robert Samuels vs. Rickie Clark - 2017 IHSAA State Finals

    Big 10 Brackets

You can subscribe to BTN+. There will be a Annual Pass or a monthly pass at $14.95. If you scroll down past it, you can choose an individual team monthly pass for $9.95. When you subscribe there will be a box checked that asks if you want to auto renew. Uncheck it and it won't try to keep you subscribed. It's a 30 day pass and gives you access to archived content from all season and the Big Ten Tournament, plus live. If you choose the individual pass, you'll only be able to view archived matches from that school. If you pay $5 more you'll get all Big Ten Teams. Outside of a Flo annual subscription, those are your only options. Of course, the Finals tomorrow are on the Big Ten Network.

  27. How awesome would it be to have multiple Big10 champs from Indiana this year? N. Lee/Red at 141, B. Lee at 149 & Mason all have decent chances. Lydy & Davison are both long shots, but that is why they wrestle the matches - they have a shot. Has Indiana had multiple Big10 champs in the same year before? And/or how many times has it happened & when/who?

  30. That's how I feel about the Wilson/James semi-state championship match. 2013-14 and 2014-15 were two years of absolutely incredible wrestling, both on the state level and nationally. The Wilson/James 6-5 semi-state match was near perfect. It had the drama, excitement, scrambles, technique, and attitude. The only match better than it that year was LeCount vs. Forte at Bellmont. A true five-star match and was miles better than their finals match at state. The score was 6-5 in the third before LeCount shook him off and cradled him up for the fall. Also, for anyone interested in watching my 2012 Match of the Year, the link is right here.

    Tough Coaching Scenarios

The first tournament I ever head coached, an opponent from Western committed two penalties that injured our wrestler forcing him to not continue; as I could see the kid didn't intend to injury our wrestler, I told the ref to blow the whistle twice so we could default to him. When these situations arise, I always think of an Purdue-IU dual I was a part of. At 133, Chris Fleeger was beating Andre Hernandez by about 9 points and was called for an illegal key-lock/arm throw. The IU coaches took the default victory. My match was next and was boring in comparison to the two I was sandwiched between. At 149, the IU wrestler hit a headlock in the opening exchange of the match, the headlock was illegal, and Purdue took the default victory. I suppose IU may have thought that the key-lock/arm throw may have been malicious, but I don't know what they thought. The 149 default seemed to be retribution. These were not great moments for wrestling. This dual meet was not a part of the tournament series, so the stakes aren't as high, but when in doubt, do what Bobby Douglas would do.
