  1. Here's the list of Indiana background and IU and Purdue guys who made it into the Coaches' Panel and/or RPI ratings. Anybody ranked in about the 20s or better in both is a virtual lock for the NCAAs. Even if they don't qualify at their conference tournament, their RPI, CPR, and accompanying strong resumes make it impossible that they won't get at-large bids. 125: Devin Schroeder #6 CPR, #4 RPI Drew Hildebrandt #7 both Liam Cronin #25 CPR, unranked RPI (not enough matches, I think) 133: Garrett People unranked CPR, #26 RPI 141: Nick Lee #1 CPR, #3 RPI Chad Red #6 CPR, #4 RPI Parker Filius #33 CPR, #25 RPI 149: Brayton Lee #6 both Graham Rooks #18 CPR, #17 RPI Griffin Parriott #22 CPR, #24 RPI 157: Kendall Coleman #7 CPR, #6 RPI 165: Cael McCormick #21 CPR, #17 RPI Drew Hughes #28 CPR, #31 RPI 174: Dylan Lydy #4 CPR, #2 RPI Ben Harvey #21 CPR, #16 RPI 184: Max Lyon #30 CPR, #28 RPI 197: Christian Brunner #6 CPR, #4 RPI Lucas Davison #12 CPR, #19 RPI 285: Mason Parris #2 CPR, #1 RPI Thomas Penola #26 CPR, #17 RPI

  4. I can attest to the fact that Shenandoah had a special group but it wasn’t without hard work, dedication and buy in. My son was the varsity coach, and although he had had success in small doses, he didn’t have solid coaches at the junior high level so the deck was stacked twice against him. Coach Slivka and I stepped in as junior high coaches. The boys were given a vision and we convinced them they could compete and compete at a high level. To re-enforce that we went and wrestled against teams from Warren, Center Grove, Yorktown and the likes and it confirmed what we were “selling”. We focused on basics and fell in line with what the varsity coach was teaching at the high school level. In the end, thru “buy in”, hard work and never being “out of season” we reaped the benefits. It helped to have parents like myself and Coach Slivka that had a vested interest in having a solid team for our boys. We traveled to open rooms in Indy, went to Humphrey’s and opened our room to all-comers, we wrestled in multiple states(all on the cheap) many times having 5-6 kids in one hotel room. The road to success always travels thru hard work, getting “buying in”, implementing a system and good coaches throughout the entire organization. Silas is a rare athlete as were a few others within our program but some were not nearly considered athletically gifted. Guys like Josh Gee, Ryan Surguy, Dallas Pugsley worked off season along with Silas, Aj, Hayden and Jordan to get to the level they achieved. We didn’t spend thousands, we carpooled, set up fundraisers to off-set costs and we had fun together. At the end of the day, these boys worked hard, sometimes 4X per week. It didn’t come without them being self motivated, working hard and believing in themselves. I am proud to have been a part of the success we had collectively as a team and coaching staff.

  5. Get together 2 or 3 of the guys from some of those great teams of the past like Mater Dei 2003 and let them talk about what their 4 years was like, where they went after HS and what they are up to now Maybe also track down some state winners from way back when 60s? 70s? and have them talk about what the wrestling world was like back in the old days

  10. Sometimes there is a circumstance where a few parents in a community come together for the common purpose of advancing the abilities of their kids. Silas has been talked about a lot on this thread, but keep in mind that coming up through the tiny Shenandoah system, they had at one time formed a group of extremely talented wrestlers including both Slivka boys, AJ Black, Hayden Lohrey, and I am sure I am missing some others that Mr Allred could fill in. I don't know the story of when or how they all got together, but for both large and small schools, I think it is a powerful trend when you see a "wave" of kids around the same age getting after it in the offseason and feeding off of each other's accomplishments. May have been a similar circumstance with Hanover Central. I can remember Union County had a few seasons with multiple state placers also.

  21. @TeamGarciaYou're clear and concise instructions were tremendously successful. Bill Wallton is a busy man and is grateful for your time savers. You'd figure all these years of announcing, I would be a technological wiz. But @TeamGarcia is the tech Juggernaut of Indianamat. Speaking of Grateful, that reminds me of the 33rd Grateful Dead Concert I went to. The best concert ever. Jerry Garcia recognized me in the stands, and invited me back during the half time show. We were chilling and he gave me clear and concise directions on rolling a >>>>>, then I said you're the best Garcia ever. Wayyyyyyyyy, speaking of Awsome Garcia's is @Jerry Garcia related to @TeamGarcia. Holy Moly, This is like when Jim Morrison met Van Morrison and said we have be related. Having the greatest rock star ever as an uncle, that's better than announcing the NBA All Star game.

  23. I can tell you when my son was getting recruited as a Junior who had been to Semi State - one of the schools we reached out to literally told me - he doesn’t have the accolades for me to give him a ton of money. In that same breath he said your son just worked a multi time placer from here , but without those accolades it’s a hard sell. He elaborated further , “well when I’m recruiting other kids - I can’t say hey I just signed a semi state kid from Indiana! “ This was a D2 school in North Carolina - for a kid like mine those accolades are huge. He didn’t do many off season tournaments as he played 2 other sports for most of High School. Our School has 520 kids - That being said for Colleges that recruit Indiana , they typically know getting to Semi State from some regionals is like getting to state in other states. My son wanted to go somewhere warm and those schools we spoke too didn’t really recruit Indiana and didn’t understand our system. So those accolades were huge.

  27. It would be sweet if there were some sort of duals tournament where everyone was included and this whole process could be fully decided by in-season head-to-head matches. Seemingly the only solution with our current restrictions: Everybody in the state guards schedule points for two separate Saturdays. Saturday number 1 has regionalized, classed qualification tournaments for Team State. Saturday number two has the Team State finals and regionalized super duals at pre-determined sites for all of the non-qualifiers. All we have to do is get 300 coaches and 300 ADs on board and have someone organize all the officials and team assignment details necessary to have that many sites going at once two times during the season.

  31. Silas is the best wrestler in the History of Indiana Wrestling. But I wouldn't put him above Escobedo, Tsirtsis, and Howe. Those guys were the greatest. Im saying Mount Rushmore brothers, Rock N Roll hall of fame level. Mason Paris, he also is the Indiana greatest wrestler all time. Oh yea, whats this got to do with Class wrestling? Class wrestling has its problems, Yea, I love giving a lot awards out for effort. But you got to look at the big picture, the whole thing is better when its all one family. Compare it to the Grateful Dead, some of the members were bigger than others and maybe in a different class. Jerry Garcia was big, and a huge musician like 4A, but the other members were 1A and 2a. But you put the band together, they all contributed and were bigger than the whole, and best of all time. Yea, take Ohio, its parts are better than all the Indiana parts. But when you divide them up, its not as good as Indiana. Ohio is like Creedence Clearwater, the greatest band in history of Western Civilization. Then John Fogarty leaves, they're still good, but not great. Its like classed Ohio wrestling.

  32. I agree with this statement, however Silas didn't just compete against guys his own weight... He dominated. Every win by pin this season, less than 10 wins in his career didn't end in pin only 2 career losses ranked number 2 in the nation. When he's all said and done who know's what else he's going to accomplish. I'm sure there's not many NCAA all-Americans or National Champs that come from a public school the size of Shanendoah, Both thing's that can be accomplished. I'm not saying both accomplishments are on the same level just saying they're similar ideas.

  33. That's outstanding brother. That's like the 18th best post ever on Indianamat. That reminds we when John Wooden, the greatest coach in western civilization, and only 2nd to coaches like Dan Gable and Cael Sanderson said to me. "Things turn out best for the people who make the best the way things turn out".

  36. Actually.....kind of, yes. But not in that articulated way. You simply help them develop a mindset that breaks the “small town mentality” of “It can never happen to me”. You encourage them to set their goals ridiculously high....then spill their guts every day to accomplish them. Urge them to never make excuses, work as hard in life & the classroom as they do in the sport. Teach them that wins & losses don’t define them....their response does. Build them up in the reality that they can accomplish anything. And at the end of the day......when/if they fall short of those goals, reiterate to them they haven’t failed. Encourage them to look around.....because they still will have accomplished more that 98% of everyone else. And 100% of those who fear failure.

  37. Due to past experience in Michigan. I can say that INDIANA WRESTLING IS MUCH BETTER THAN MICHIGAN WRESTLING. Weather Michigan has 1 division at state or 4.. Indiana is still better. When I first moved here I constantly argued for Michigan with my team but it is very clear to me now that Indiana Wrestling is VERY UNDERRATED

  39. Ahhhhhh.... The What “if” travel rule ... they’ll let you go but you gotta get a waiver . Micic was giving permission to wrestle over seas one year I believe. Yes the travel restriction is dumb but it is what it is in Indiana, Michigan and a few other states . Don’t like it, take your kids to Ohio or Illinois or something to get that exposure if you feel IHSAA is holding them back . ^^^^ ... what if I told you can wrestle out of state during IHSAA State ?

    Better than Indiana

The distance we can travel isn’t the major issue with this rule. Heck I can live with it and see a point in having it. What really holds us back is they other part of the rule. The fact a school can not face a team/wrestler who has traveled from outside thAt radius to be at the competition. This rule was likely conceived just thinking about travel for single competition team sports. But the reality of it has a big effect on individual sports where multiple schools attend an event. It practically eliminates Indiana schools from participating in most major individual tournaments.

    Better than Indiana

The initial reaction confused rankings with earned placement. The rankings are locked at the beginning of sectionals. The #1 ranked wrestler placed 4th (ok due to injury) and the #2 ranked wrestler placed 2nd at his semistate. If the state finals were seeded, could you feel good about taking a lower ranked kid that had beaten the #2 wrestler the week before, and match him against the #1 or #3 wrestler? Latest head to head is the first seed criteria normally, so although it seems crazy the way it worked out, other wrestlers earned a better first match than the 2. The real unfortunate circumstance was for Parkinson i do agree that wrestle backs would be nice, though

  43. I have noticed in multiple instances ( for example the 120lb semi finals of state this Year) the referee didn’t call the illegal move until he realized Bettich was slow to get up. I’ve realized the referees won’t call illegal moves unless they notice the wrestler looks injured and they change the call.

  46. Many wrestlers and coaches take advantage of the injury (time-out) rule. This is much more of a problem than the injury default situation. You can't tell a kid that he can't take injury time, even when it is very obvious, he's not injured, just tired. At some point, you must trust the integrity of the coaches and wrestlers, and sometimes the athlete, and more importantly, the adults in the situation, are not teaching and displaying it.
    1 point
  47. I understand there's coaches that abuse the rules but do we really this it's necessary to punish kids and that don't abuse it? I've had kids (in none DQ situations) Hit there head injury default be cause either a trainer wasn't there to check on the situation or the trainer need more time so injury time runs out and the default. once the trainer was able to give a full evaluation allow the kid to wrestle. The number one concern should be safety. Creating a rule like this with cause coaches and wrestlers to put safety aside and force wrestling even if they shouldn't just to not default the next match. The point should be for a wrestler not do an illegal move. I teach my wrestlers not to put the match in the refs hands. Part of that includes avoiding illegal moves. I understand bad calls are made and some coaches take advantage of the rules but once again I don't think we should punish those that don't do this or the illegal move is the correct call. Refs say in most coaches meaning that safety is a priority and I think it should be. Once again this is where there should always be medical staff to help make these decisions.
    1 point
  48. Or when a coach blatantly stops a kid from getting up when they are fine. I’ve seen multiple coaches in the state literally say, “if you stay down you win” then when the time is up they stand up shake hands Walk off and end up wrestling in the next match. If you take the full five, you shouldn’t be allowed to wrestle the rest of the day. That takes a “cheap win” out of the coaches hands.
