  1. The people have spoken. Thanks for all the input. President Greg Ratliff, tournament director JD Minch, and others have put their heads together and figured out proposed ways to make 20 mats work so that we can run with the idea of 8 teams in 3A and 4A and 12 teams in 1A and 2A. See the updated nitty gritty details in the original post. Cheers

  2. Let's not forget about how dominant Zeke Seltzer is at 120. He is the part of the reason 126 is so deep.

    Red Vs Lee ?

I am going out on a limb here, but I will go Lee with a major decision. What will be most interesting to me is to see is how Red deals with Lee's offense. No one has come close to stopping him when he takes a shot (which is often) in college or in the Sr Open (with the exception of Jordan Oliver). While he has not wrestled anyone with even remotely the defensive skills of Red yet in folkstyle this year, he certainly did so in freestyle at the Sr. Open. Of course, the caveat is freestyle does not equal folkstyle. Meanwhile, Red can re-attack or turn your offense into his offense with the best of them. All of that is another way of saying I am really looking forward to Friday night.

    Next Level

@UncleJimmy hit on a lot of great points. There are so many factors that come into play once a wrestler moves to the next level not just from Indiana but everywhere! You will watch guys that didn't win state titles become all-americans and guys that won mutiple-state titles not make it through their first year or two. One of the biggest is getting use to there never being any easy days. Most top level guys dominate their room in high school. Once you enter college, especially at the D1 level, you are no longer the alpha and even days you go against walk ons are going to be tough. This becomes mentally taxing and you struggle with confidence issues almost daily! Relationships with coaches and wrestlers play a part as well. Maybe you don't mesh well with the coaches or the guys on the team. They are partiers and you're not. Another thing I have personally observed is guys fitting in right away and with all the new found freedom don't know how to balance partying, athletics, and school. We'd like to think that these kids can make the right choices but learning how to deal with that freedom can be really difficult! It doesn't make them bad kids it's just the reality. I was only a walk on at IU. The highlight of my career was being booed at rec hall for stalling and not giving up a major against Pat Cummins when I was thrown in at heavyweight. It was/is still the hardest 4 years of my life physically, mentally and academically. In fact I tried to come home after my first semester and my dad wouldn't let me! It never got easier but it just became the new normal. I agree with others that this is a good time for Indiana wrestling and we have a lot of talent at many levels.

  11. Agree , UIndy has surprised some individuals , as a team they have had a ton of injuries but that allows experience for some of the younger wrestlers..Wabash has been really strong in the national duals as well ..several of their wrestlers ranked in the top two of their weight class ..

    The Mendez effect

The Seltzer effect isn’t as pronounced. There are still a lot of placers and qualifiers in the weight class 120 = 8 state placers and 9 state qualifiers

  13. I totally agree. The only other reason I wouldn't mind an individual tournament is runner ups ect... Those kids don't get the recognition of finishing 2nd in the Conference.

  14. I normally don’t mind bumping in dual meets but when it affects the aspect of a true conference champ in each weight is also when I start to have problem with it. I do like however that kids get 7 matches in.

  15. What are your thoughts? I am kind of torn. I like the team aspect but when you get to moving around the lineup it doesn't get you a clear winner per weight class. Would love to hear your thoughts.

    Red Vs Lee ?

Just had another thought about this after hitting enter. The other reason to get excited about Friday is I think we are seeing the best version of each of these guys right now. I could argue that was not the case either of the prior two times they had met. In high school Lee was returning after extended time away due to injury. And as Y2CJ41 posted over in the college thread (what was he thinking?) Red was not enjoying wrestling last year and having a hard time finding motivation. But now we have two healthy, motivated, skilled wrestlers at their peak. Did I mention I was excited for Friday?

  18. It was mentioned that Hudkins was out for the season after his injury at the Midlands. On the broadcast last night they also said that Konrath was out for the season due to concussions.

  22. Cathedral High School's team is shaping up to possibly be their best ever. They are ranked 42nd in the country with sophomore Zeke Seltzer ranked 15th per InterMat and dominated the IHSWCA State Duals in the 3A class and ran away with Al Smith, and I was wondering since they are a private school, would we ever see a time when Indiana allows private or independent schools to be in their own league? It would be much like how Texas has TAPPS, Pennsylvania has the PAIS, Virginia has VISAA, and Maryland has the MISAA, and so forth. If we had our own governing body for private and independent schools in Indiana free of travel restrictions, would it be interesting to see how a team like Cathedral fares at the National Preps tournament in Pennsylvania among others? Would it be a good way to create more depth or improve our talent pool in Indiana?

    National Preps

I would admit that there are some things that are difficult with having the IHSAA as our sports sanctioning body, but I think it would be a horrible detriment to the sport if we did not have them. Without the IHSAA the sport at the high school level would resemble the sport at the youth level. So teams would become all-star travel teams with-in a few years. Not to mention that schools would not put the same funding and care into their programs... Why would a school keep and maintain a wrestling room for a club team that isn't IHSAA sanctioned? I also think that overall numbers would take a huge hit. Think of how many kids come out for wrestling to just be a part of the team you would lose all of those kids. Busing, uniforms, gym schedules all would play a role as well. Finally no IHSAA no state tourney like we have now. There would be no semi-states in great facilities, no state finals at Banker's Life. This isn't to say that the say that wrestling would die if we went this route, it would just look much different and be much worse imo.

  24. Alright wrestling fans, here is a new podcast made by Isaac and JJ Weimer called "The Whizzer." You can love it, you can hate it, and feel free to give input back on the forum. It's not beautiful, but it was the first attempt. We hope you enjoy. https://anchor.fm/jj-isaac https://open.spotify.com/show/47QUV7Du6vdMN8KNMieEqN We will be posting one weekly, thanks!

  25. Yes, I know Parriott has been hurt. This was his first match back since Midlands where he looked hurt then too. And he looked the part of someone wrestling in a pitch count just coming back, gassed after the first period. But I will give credit to Rooks, he’s looked great the past few weeks, his two wins over Thomas from Northwestern we’re really impressive. My comment on Parriott majoring him was a while ago, when Rooks was losing to guys not as highly regarded as Parriott. Honestly, I’m probably just an annoyed Purdue fan wishing people in State would give the Boilers a little more love. The push in recruiting your talking about for IU has already happened for Purdue, and they are nationally relevant now, yet all anyone talks about is how Angel has the team on the way up.

Saw some of @FCFIGHTER170 fights on the ol inter web. I can attest that he is a tough dude. Pretty sure the crazy talk would not happen face to face. But.. I would love to see some @GenHeavyHandz Wang Chung videos!!!! Where can we find them? Surely a Wang Chung master of 23 years has some good content on a Wang Chung website!!! Everybody have fun tonight Everybody Wang Chung tonight

  31. Wrestled between 145-160 from eighth grade to senior year(2014). A year and a half ago I would have been wrestling 220, but now I’m back down to the 170 class, and could make the cut back to 160 pretty easily.

    The Mendez effect

If we are going off of “impressive or dominant” you forgot Andrew Howe- only loss was to Reece Humphrey. I think there is a strong case that Andrew Howe is still (although Mendez could catch him and Mason Parris flirted with it) the best Indiana wrestler of all time. Even with his one loss. And though I never saw him wrestle I am assuming people also tried to avoid Lance Ellis.

He should do very well and imho win a national title if he's in shape and wrestling like he's capable of.

  36. The worst thing is the one announcer... Keeps calling the match "the game" or "the fight", the wrestlers "players", and moves "the plays". SMH
