  1. I don't post often but when I do and there may be opposing views I post my name so there is no confusion where my opinion is coming from. This is Steve Sandefer Sr. Yes my son is the current head coach at Mishawaka, but other than that I am not an official administrator or coach at Mishawaka. I proudly support our community, school and team. I love wrestling and try to positively promote the sport at all levels....not just self serving to our own program. As such I do have some disappointment and contention to see such negative comments regarding individuals within a profession that give so much to support our sport of wrestling. The officiating crew that worked the Al Smith are top notch gentlemen that have given many many years of service to this sport. Many of those being criticized openly on social media are Hall of Fame individuals that have literally been involved in promoting this sport most of their lives. We will soon be reaching a crisis situation in our State if we are not able to recruit and develop young officials that will shortly be NEEDED to replace these lifelong veterans. There is simply no way we can do this with the attitude displayed on social media by a few individuals that didn't have a match go their way this weekend. To the simple fan or parent I can with almost 100% certainty guarantee that in the coach's meeting prior to the first match that this crew of officials explained exactly how stalling was going to be called. Most likely with examples for each situation. I can also assure you that 32 teams of coaches relayed this information to their wrestlers. But lets face it....we are still dealing with high school kids. They are still going to back up, play the outside edge, not circle in, lay on their stomachs no matter how many times a coach yells "UP", ride the hips while controlling on top without moving side to side. The philosophy is increased action. I get it....the call does not always go your way...but to get on a public forum and call out an entire crew for bias, call out the tournament director for being at fault, calling out a Hall of Fame Coach and official by name.....there is in my OPINION no place in this sport that allows for positive to come from that action. If you are a wrestler on a team, a coach, a parent, an alumni of a program or just a fan...you have a responsibility to REPRESENT your program with the dignity and character your program deserves. Again IMO that cannot be done by casting shadows over others in our sport that selflessly have given their dedication and time to simply give YOUR kids the opportunities that are necessary for them to compete in this sport. Also keep in mind that in particular to the Al Smith Invitational...the key word is invitational. It has always been an honor to be a team that is invited and Mishawaka considers many factors when extending those invitations. This year was no exception and may have been the best overall field ever. If you have valid concerns that you feel can make this a better tournament...by all means...use the proper channels and communicate that with your coaches and Athletic Departments to relay those concerns to Coach Sandefer and his Athletic Department. Negative feelings in the heat of the moment simply shared on social media doesn't really solve anything or even make you feel better if you are honest. Thankful for the support of our Superintendent and School Board as a few were in attendance, our Athletic Dept, Officiating Crew and table workers both days. Our announcers Mike & Mike...Mike Reiser in the Cave and Mike Kensinger in the big boy gym. Coaches, team, parents, fans & MHS Alum for helping to make this another great Al Smith!! Remember I am just a FAN so don't hold my views against those that are working hard everyday for your wrestlers. POSITIVELY PROMOTE THE SPORT. Steve Sandefer Sr.

  3. Anybody who don't think Henry Wilk is a top notch ref or bias is delusional.. he's by far 1 of the best refs I've ever seen and he's a no nonsense guy! Idk about all the others but I can guarantee there was no bias on his behalf!

  5. First of all great work by @decbell1 for helping to bring back the Al smith programs with all of the champs from the past. Hopefully everyone who attended was able to pick that up. second There has only been 3 4x Al smith Champs 3! Randy Baker Bellmont, Tommy Forte Mishawaka, Drew Hughes Lowell. That is pretty amazing. But 2 wrestlers are on their way to 4 after winning 2 in their first 2 tries Zeke Seltzer Cathedral (113,120) Jesse Mendez Crown Point (126,132) these 2 have looked dominant and I would be shocked if they lost the next 2 years. Third Mendez has won Back to Back OW(the most pins in the least amount of time for a champ) has anyone won 2 OW’s? He could be a 4x ow winner also

  7. @SWINfan Asa is banged up a bit. He was chomping at the bit to wrestle this weekend. He will be back better than ever soon. Same with The Peanut Butter and Jelly man. They both have solid winning records to start their careers. Look for them both to be at some more opens soon. Can’t wait to see the others from last years high school graduate class to wrestle this weekend. Great group of kids.

  8. In your 11 years officiating did you ever hear a negative reaction from a crowd when you thought you made the right call?? Im not trying to say that they made every call perfectly in the tournament. I get upset about calls from officials every weekend. I think in that group some are better than others but overall I didn’t think the officiating was as bad as you stated. My main point was most of those guys in that gym are getting up there in age and probably would love to be sitting in the stands watching great wrestling while some younger people join the officiating ranks, but for some reason people aren’t beating down the door to walk out there and officiate and get ridiculed on the internet for the calls they made. Lastly if a kid is stalling it doesn’t matter what the score is or how much time is on the clock. 1 minute into the match or 2 seconds left

  11. It’s great we have so many expert officials out there in the stands. During the coaches meeting they said they need more officials you should grab a whistle and some arm bands and show them how it’s done.

  13. Silas Allred will pursue his 4th consecutive Spartan Classic title this weekend. Due to my relative infancy regarding following the sport...I’m hoping others on the site can provide me with a possible list of other 4x winners, and/or the most recent. Thanks in advance for any info or clarity provided. It will be used by our school, local newspapers, program, and a proud dad’s ego stroking.

  14. I mean if he was eligible to wrestle, then the coach could decide to hold him out.

  15. Mater Dei could just schedule a dual meet this week to get around that.

  16. Seeds may be affected by a few teams who blatantly refuse to submit results from duals and other events. If you see a headscratcher I'd look at the team's IndianaMat profile and see what information has been submitted.

  17. I don’t think this is up to the coach. If a wrestler is DQed then they have to sit the next contest.

Watched some of the Al Smith yesterday and man, Zeke Seltzer really is one of the most developed wrestlers I have seen at his age. His shot set-ups were patient, precise, and effective. If something was not right, he showed a lot of skill and training in being able to instantly adjust and convert. The best scrambling match was Rodgers vs. Levitz at 160. Rodgers, since last year, struck me as the ultimate high school magician, but Levitz was completely ready for him and had complete poise and toughness. Kudos to all.

  21. God, I’ve always hated this response so much. You don’t have to be a chef to know your food got burnt. You don’t have to be a dentist to know if something is wrong with your tooth. And you don’t have to be a referee to see a bad call is being made. Edit: This is not to say we need to get on a message board to ridicule refs for every bad call; they’re human, it happens, none of us could get it perfect every time. But you don’t have to be a certified referee to spot bad calls.

  24. As an outsider, not rooting for any team just there watching wrestling, I thought the officiating was like any typical officiating at any other tourney. There were some head scratching calls, but I’ve seen those same calls at every tourney, it being here in the region or down in central Indiana. Nobody is perfect but those officials I thought did a helluva job. The only call I will always hate a ref make is double stalling. I absolutely hate that call especially in a heavyweight match, someone is pushing the pace, someone is making attempts. You will never see me agree with a double stall call.

  25. Let me start by saying, Indiana officials as a whole are much better than many surrounding states. That’s pretty easy to say going to Regional or National tournaments with officials from multiple states. One of the reasons that Indiana is so good is a very real attempt to be consistent throughout the state however there are some nuances in different areas. The region typically is pretty aggressive with stall calls compared to Indy or down south. It probably appears worse to Indy guys because Indy has soooo many officials (some really good and some newbies) making consistency within Indy a little harder and it just seems too aggressive when you see refs from NW Indiana that call stalling without hesitation. Good or bad kids and coaches have to adjust and wrestle through it.

  26. Well you are clearly talking about Garrett vs Cathedral for 3rd at 106. Bottom line is Henry was counting near fall on our kid when his back was not past 90 degrees as they were in a scramble situation . Our head coach questioned this and asked for the second refs opinion and he determined there was no near fall. This is nothing uncommon as we had this happen to us at 113 the previous round vs Goshen. The match was a nail biter and we were happy to come out with a win in double OT. I can guarantee you Coach Seltzer would have questioned the call if the situation was reversed. Both kids wrestled their butts off and it was a great match. The issue I have is the post match as you were on the floor yelling obscenities at me and Kraus right in front of our kid. Cathedral is a great program with great coaches and I have nothing but respect for what they have accomplished. It’s sad to see a parent act like that and tarnish a great tournament like the Al Smith.

  27. Took a quick look at the brackets for the Midlands that begin on Saturday. Things that jumped out to me at first glance... - Brock Hudkins looks to be back for IU. He is the 4 seed. - Drew Hildebrandt is the 5 seed, so a match up with Hudkins could happen in the Quarterfinals if the seeds hold up - Cayden Rooks drew Gavin Teasdale of Iowa in the first round. Both are unseeded and the winner will face 5-seed Louie Hayes of Virginia. - No Kyle Luigs, Asa Garcia or Paul Konrath for IU. Does The Midlands not allow Unattached wrestlers anymore? - Alec White is unseeded and will wrestle 14 seed Carter Happel of Iowa in Round 1 - Kyle Todrank drew #1 seed and top ranked Austin O'Connor in the first round at 149 - Kendall Coleman is the 3 seed at 157 - Nick South is the 13 seed at 165 - 174 is loaded with Hoosier natives... Dylan Lydy is the top seed. Ben Harvey is seeded 4th, Jacob Covaciu 5th and Donnell Washington is the 9 seed. - Lucas Davison is the 6 seed at 197. Nick Willham is unseeded and drew the 2-seed Pat Brucki of Princeton- - Thomas Penola is unseeded at 285. He drew 16 seed Jordan Earnest of Ohio.

  31. I like consistent stall calls early and often. Only saw the finals via stream (Outstanding job btw and THANKS!) and thought officials did a pretty good job. I think there could have been more stalls called in some of the later matches. IMO, stall calls shouldn't change if ranked wrestlers are involved or even weight class. Lack of action or avoiding action = fist.

  33. Not trying to bash any officials here but one major thing I noticed was the inconsistency. You can’t call for stalling but 2 seconds later they end up scoring. I’ve seen too many matches this weekend get dictated by the officials. Al Smith is a very competitive tournament with dozens of ranked wrestlers battling for a championship. It’s good to be on top of stalling but when you have two ranked competitors, you typically aren’t going to see what you’ll see in a peewee 45 match. Nonetheless, great tournament and thanks for officiating!

  34. The bias against central Indiana schools just showed in the 182 finals match. Warren gets called for stalling after attempting a snap down yet Walker can sit in top riding hips for almost 3 minutes with no stall call.

  37. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com In a town that literally gets its name for being tough and rugged, the Three Amigos personify what Floyds Knobs is all about. Floyd Central High School, located in Floyds Knobs, is the home of wrestlers Gavinn Alstott, J. Conway and Jonathan Kervin. The trio is known around town as the Three Amigos, primarily for their success on the wrestling mat. They are tough wrestlers that like to grind out wins and be physical. One wouldn’t expect anything less from a Floyds Knobs resident. Floyds Knobs is named after the Knobstone Escarpment located there (and Colonel Davis Floyd). The Knobstone is the most rugged terrain in Indiana. It has steep hills which are commonly referred to as knobs. As for the Three Amigos – all three qualified for state last season. Alstott finished fourth and Kervin sixth. This year, all three are ranked in the top 10 in their weight classes. “The Three Amigos is a term we coined last year and started calling them that,” Floyd Central coach Brandon Sisson said. “I don’t think they mind it. They all three work together and have pushed each other to get better.” Kervin is the only senior in the trio. He is currently ranked No. 2 at 152 pounds. Last season Kervin finished with a 39-4 record. He won sectional and regional and eventually finished sixth at state in the 145-pound class. “Jonathan is a really tough wrestler,” Sisson said. “He wrestles hard for all six minutes. He works really closely with is uncle, former two-time state champion Cooper Samuels. Those two have worked together for the past five years and it has really benefited Jonathan.” Kervin’s goal this season is to win a state title. “My style is sort of dynamic,” Kervin said. “I like to be a little deranged. I use my length. Last year I felt like I wrestled poorly at state. I didn’t do my normal workout to get ready. I want to get back and show what I can really do.” Alstott, a junior, finished 42-4 last season. He was a sectional and regional champ and ended up third in the Evansville semistate and would later place fourth at state. “Gavinn is a grinder,” Sisson said. “He gets out there, gets in your face and pushes the pace non-stop. He’s very business-like on the mat and in the practice room. I’m not ever going to have to see if he’s just messing around. When it’s time to work, it’s time to work. No matter what he does, he puts his head down and goes to work.” Alstott’s uncle, Craig Alstott, was Floyd Central’s first ever four-time state qualifier. Craig never placed at the state meet, however. “I think Gavinn got the monkey off his back a little by placing last year,” Sisson said. “But he has his sights set significantly higher this year.” Off the mat, Gavinn is an excellent student and has been a team leader since his freshman season. “He’s a really good kid,” Sisson said. “He gets good grades and is good to the other kids. Even as a freshman I thought of him as a team leader. He’s just a phenomenal kid.” Conway is the quietest in the group. He had a not-so-quiet season last year, however. Conway went 23-4 on the year and claimed a sectional and a regional title. He finished runner-up in semistate but lost on Friday night at the state tournament. “He’s a really, really quiet kid,” Sisson said. “I don’t think I heard him say anything at all his freshman year. Now as a sophomore he’s coming out of his shell a little bit. On the mat he’s more open. He is already at 130 takedowns in just 18 matches this season. He’s full throttle. You let him go, and he goes.” Sisson is pleased with his team this season and hopes the Three Amigos will help lead them to great things. “There are years where you have a lot of talent, but also a lot of drama,” Sisson said. “Then there are years where you don’t have any drama, but you don’t really have any talent either. This year, I really feel like we have a lot of talent and no drama. I’m lucky this year.”
