Start date: February 20th 2019 6-8pm MORATORIUM WEEK: 7/1/19 to 7/9/19 Director: Zack Johansen Email: zjohansen@hobart.k12.in.us Phone: 219-689-1613 STYLES COVERED: Freestyle, Greco, and Folkstyle This week will feature new head wrestling coach for Hobart High School... Jason Cook Coach Cook was welcomed to Hobart High School this season. This Valparaiso Alum is glad to be back in "Da Region." Before graduating from Valpo High school, Jason Cook was a 3x state finalist. As a freshman 103, Cook put up a 44-7 record finishing 2nd in the state. The next year as a 112 sophmore, Cook was upset at the regional tournament ending with a record of 36-3. As a junior 125, Cook found himself under the light of the state finals once again. Ending his junior season as state runner-up and a record of 38-3. Senior year, Jason Cook brought a state title back to the region with a record of 48-0. He capped off his high school career with a career record of 168-13. Along with a state title, Cook won the 2002 Ward E. Brown IHSAA Mental Attitude Award, and was a recipient of the Harold F. Mumby Award for most valuable wrestler. Cook went on to wrestle in-state for the Boilermakers of Purdue University. During his career at Purdue, Cook wrestled in the 141 weight class. Cook was a 2004 Kent State Open Champ and a 2005 Body Bar Invite Champ. He had wins over multiple NCAA Qualifiers and NCAA All-Americans. Returning home, Jason was an assistant coach for Chesterton High school for 8 years where he had multiple state placers. Cook has coached at West Lafayette HS, Fischers, and now Hobart. Hobart is proud to have Jason as a coach, and we know he is pumped to be a Brickie. This year Jason inherited a young team with only 1 senior in total. The Brickies had 11 semi-state qualifiers, and return 13 starters next year. Cook now resides in Valpo with his wife Jen, and their cats .

  6. Parker Reynolds made the Finals too as a 1st year schoolboy and was looking to be 1 of only 2 wrestlers (14U & below) in the finals to win back to back USAW Titles. It would have been his 3rd in 4 years. He fell just short losing in OT in the championship match to finish 2nd.

  11. It is my privilege to congratulate the men who have been named as Indiana's National Wrestling Coaches Association Head Coach of the Year and Assistant Coach of the Year. Head Coach of the Year Tony Currie of Adams Central High School has continued to build the great wrestling tradition for the Jets. Now in his 15th year of coaching at the school, first as a volunteer, then assistant and now head coach, Tony has continued to build Adams Central Wrestling. The Jets won the IHSWCA Team State Duals this past season. The team compiled a 23-3 record and claimed the team titles at both the IHSAA Sectional and Regional tournaments. Coach Curie is also a founding coach of the wrestling little league for youth wrestlers in his area. Assistant Coach of the Year Joe Somerville has been a member of the Jeffersonville Red Devils program for 15 years. Along with his duties as assistant coach at the high school, the History and English teacher is also the head coach for the Jeff Youth Club and serves as club treasurer. In addition, Joe is tournament director for the Jeff Holiday tournament and the Sectional and Regional. Jeffersonville had a freshman class of 25 wrestlers this past season and was able to field full Varsity, 2nd varsity and C-team squads. The Red Devils were IHSAA Sectional champions and Regional runners-up this past season. Congratulations to both of these men for the success they have brought to their programs and all they do to build our great sport! Dave Cloud-Indiana Representative NWCA

141 definitely wasn't tougher 1-6 than 133. You could make the argument that 141 was better 1-16, but 133 was pretty dog gone good this year.

    Class of 2021

I thought Cottey was a lock at 106 this year, hadn’t seen or heard much about the Culver kid, Cernus. If Cottey stays at 106 and Cernus moves up to 113 or vice versa, I could see Cottey taking home a title in early 2020

I like the Bates pick a ton. Of course we can't forget about Donahue and Laplace. Bates is as tough and humble as they come. Warren would have to be my two. Cottey and Hall at the 3-4 and I am not sure If I would have Ellis up there just yet.

    Class of 2021

Hammers all around Boarman (Littel & Mendez) Aiden Warren might be around Lee weight again. Cottey at 113 ? My pick would be Evan Bates at 182 again, a Jr. at upper weight is a good combination. If I had a confidence poll Top 5 1 being the best shot, 5 the least 1. Bates 2. Ellis 3. Warren 4. Cottey 5. Hall

  22. Me (Tyson Nisley, 145) and my buddy (Matt Neff, 170) are looking for a dual team to be apart of this off season and wrestle at some of the bigger dual tournaments. Me and Matt were both semi-state qualifers this year and are looking to see ourselves on the podium at Bankers Life our senior years. We are both willing to be flexible with our weights (maybe not cutting down a ton because we wanna eat) Let me know if you or someone else has spots available for us.
