  1. Based on the IndianaMat final Power Poll (https://indianamat.com/index.php?/team_rankings.html/2019/power-poll-final-r114/) of the top scoring teams, here are some potential landmines with respect to the race for the team championship. HUGE thanks to @Indysportsfan and his excellent data! *NOTE: Northerners - before you complain... there are not many highly ranked teams (other than Portage and Crown Point) from either the East Chicago or Fort Wayne semistates. Although there are a LOT of compelling matchups at regionals and semistate, I did not see many that would directly effect the team race at state. Once they get to state - then there are plenty of hammers that could mess up team points! 106 Pounds Huge landmine potential here Evansville Semistate Alec Freeman - Mater Dei (#3 / #1SS) @ Evansville North Logan Miller - Brownsburg (#8 / #2SS) @ Mooresville Blaze Garcia - Avon (#12 / #3SS) @ Mooresville Noah Lykins - Columbus East (NR / #8SS) @ Jeffersonville Either Miller or Garcia will likely finish 2nd at Mooresville. They could draw into Freeman or Lykins at semistate ticket-round. Freeman won a 8-6 decision over Miller this season, and Miller won by 3-1 over Garcia at sectionals. Could be a big point-scoring swing at Bankers LIfe for one of these teams depending on how things go 113 Pounds Evansville Semistate Cole Ross - Mater Dei (#5 / #1SS) @ Evansville North Ben Dalton - Monrovia (#6 / #3SS) @ Mooresville Hayden Watson - Center Grove (#8 / #4SS) @ Mooresville Cameron Allen - Plainfield (#13 / #8SS) @ Mooresville Kamariyon Nelson - Brownsburg (#17 / #6SS) @ Mooresville The log-jam at Mooresville could wreak havoc at semistate. Watson defeated Dalton last weekend 7-2. Doesn't look like Ross has faced any of these yet - but one of the 4 will be in the same ticket round group as him 120 Pounds Evansville Semistate Blake Boarman - Mater Dei (#2 / #1SS) @ Evansville North Brayden Littell - Center Grove (#1 / #2SS) @ Mooresville Kysen Montgomery - Brownsburg (#6 / #3SS) @ Mooresville Tyler Conley - Avon (#11 / #4SS) @ Mooresville This Mooresville regional is really creating some tough matchups @ Evansville semistate! From the look of results, Boarman and Littell should be favorites to win their regionals. Boarman has a good chance that he will have to face either Montgomery or Conley in the ticket round. Either way will have huge implications for state scoring potential cause all these guys could win a few at state. Boarman has a 4-1 decision over Conley this year 126 Pounds New Castle Semistate Lukasz Walendzak - Cathedral (#6 / #1SS) @ Pendleton Heights Chase Wilkerson - Mt Vernon (#9 / #4SS) @ Pendleton Heights Logan Wagner - Westfield (#7 / #2SS) @ North Montgomery Cameron Toole - Lebanon (#8 / #5SS) @ North Montgomery Jevian Ross - Warren Central (#11 / #3SS) @ Perry Meridian Big landmine for Cathedral and Warren here. Wilkerson defeated Walendzak 2-1 at sectional last weekend. If Walendzak finishes 2nd again this weekend, he could get Ross, Wagner or Toole for ticket round at New Castle. If Walendzak wins this weekend, he could still wind up in same bracket as either Wagner or Toole. He has split decisions with Wagner this season 132 Pounds Evansville Semistate Asa Garcia - Avon (#1 / #1SS) @ Mooresville Logan Boe - Plainfield (#7 / #2SS) @ Mooresville Drake Campbell - Brownsburg (#9 / #4SS) @ Mooresville Tyler Fuqua - Franklin Comm (#18 / #5SS) @ Mooresville Clay Egli - Mater Dei (#11 / #3SS) @ Evansville North Joey Gordon - Columbus East (#19 / #6SS) @ Jeffersonville This landmine could hurt either Mater Dei or Columbus East (or both!). Mooresville is stacked at this weight - they will send 4 highly ranked wrestlers to semistate. Assuming Egli and Gordon both win their regionals, they will each have to make it past one of the Mooresville placers to get to Bankers Life 138 Pounds New Castle Semistate Tyce Freije - Roncalli (#2 / #1SS) @ Perry Meridian Gabe Smith - Perry Meridian (#9 / #2SS) @ Perry Meridian Jarred Rowlett - Warren Central (#12 / #5SS) @ Perry Meridian Andrew Wilson - Cathedral (#16 / #3SS) @ Pendleton Heights Chris Wilkerson - Mt Vernon (#17 / #7SS) @ Pendleton Heights Wilkerson defeated Wilson 2-1 at sectionals. They will face off again this weekend at Pendleton. Perry regional is loaded at this weight - Smith and Rowlett should face off in the semifinals. If Freije can win regionals, then Smith and/or Rowlett could draw into Wilson or another tough opponent (Gabe Phillips/Kyle Holman) and have their trip to state cancelled. Wilson really has his work cut out for him to get to Bankers Life and help Cathedral's point total - he's lost to Rowlett, Smith and Freije this season 145 Pounds New Castle Semistate Alex Mosconi - Cathedral (#3 / #1SS) @ Pendleton Heights Jeff Dunasky - Guerin (#9 / #5SS) @ Pendleton Heights Aiden Warren - Perry Meridian (#4 / #2SS) @ Perry Meridian Antwaun Graves - Warren Central (#5 / #4SS) @ Perry Meridian Bryer Hall - South Dearborn (#2 / #3SS) @ Richmond So many possibilities here! Graves or Warren will be a #2 finisher this weekend and both are absolute hammers. Warren beat Graves in OT 4-3 earlier this season so this final could go either way. If Mosconi can beat Dunasky at Pendleton, then it sets up a possible ticket-round death match of Mosconi vs Graves/Warren or Bryer Hall vs Graves/Warren unless they happen to draw the winner from North Montgomery. Cathedral/Perry/Warren could all lose a super high potential guy next weekend at New Castle 152 Pounds New Castle Semistate Cooper Noehre - Greenfield Central (#3 / #2SS) @ Perry Meridian Brice Coleman - Warren Central (#4 / #3SS) @ Perry Meridian Sam Fair - Perry Meridian (#9 / #4SS) @ Perry Meridian Elliott Rodgers - Cathedral (#2 / #1SS) @ Pendleton Heights Like 145, this is another very dangerous situation for Cathedral / Perry / Warren. Rodgers should win at Pendleton. The regional at Perry is a tossup (Fair has lost to both Noehre and Coleman, Coleman defeated Noehre last weekend). Any of the 3 Perry competitors will be heavily favored over the winners from Richmond and North Montgomery, but if one of them lands in the ticket group with Rodgers then it will be a high-stakes battle, as any of these top 10 wrestlers could end up scoring a lot of points in Indy 160 Pounds Not really any here that I see - D Washington, J Slivka, and B Davis should all win comfortably and be separated at their semistates unless there is a big upset. Most of the other top 160s are from teams not challenging for state title 170 Pounds New Castle Semistate Tyler Wagner - Cathedral (#20 / #6SS) @ Pendleton Heights Cody Klettheimer - Frankton (#3 / #1SS) @ Pendleton Heights Eli Mahan - Roncalli (#5 / #3SS) @ Perry Meridian Tucker Coffman - Union County (#8 / #5SS) @ Richmond Logan Hart - Carmel (#10 / #4SS) @ North Montgomery It's going to be very difficult for Tyler Wagner to thread the needle and make it to state. He will have Klettheimer at Pendleton Heights who will be heavily favored. Should Wagner finish as runner up, then he will have to get past either Mahan, Coffman or one of Hart/Saez/Lowe in the ticket round. Can he pull out an upset and give Cathedral a potential huge upside of points? 182 Pounds Nothing really here - Avon is the only top team to have a wrestler in the Top 20 and Brewer should be safe through semistate no matter the outcome of regionals 195 Pounds Again, not much to see. Perry Meridian's #12 Austin Lane should win there. He could have #13 Tremor Bynum at semistate ticket round 220 Pounds Evansville Semistate Micah Dodson - Martinsville (#7 / #2SS) @ Mooresville Jayden Williams - Avon (#11 / #3SS) @ Mooresville Lawson Allen - Brownsburg (#12 / #4SS) @ Mooresville Jacob Bolte - Columbus East (#1 / #1SS) @ Jeffersonville Bolte should be fine, but the outcome at Mooresville could be a swing in points down the road. Avon and Brownsburg will have to hope their wrestler can finish #1, or if they do not, then hope that they do not draw to the Bolte ticket bracket at Evansville semistate or they could leave points on the table New Castle Semistate David Guhl - Cathedral (#20 / #5SS) @ Pendleton Heights Kyle Cornwell - Elwood (#4 / #2SS) @ Pendleton Heights Andrew Irick - Hamilton SE (#3 / #1SS) @ North Montgomery Drew Webster - North Montgomery (#8 / #3SS) @ North Montgomery Haakon VanBeynan - Carmel (#16 / #8SS) @ North Montgomery Guhl has the potential to make it to state, but he will have to navigate some landmines - if he finishes a likely 2nd place to Kyle Cornwell this weekend, then he will need to get past one of the North Montgomery top 3 - best scenario for him matchup-wise is to get the #4 from North Montgomery and the #1 from Richmond as they have nobody on either the state or semistate list 285 Pounds New Castle Semistate Jamichael Watts - North Central (#1 / #1SS) @ Pendleton Heights Dennis Hubbard - Warren Central (#9 / #3SS) @ Perry Meridian John Harris - Roncalli (#10 / #5SS) @ Perry Meridian The big guys are pretty unpredictable - Roncalli's John Harris defeated Hubbard at sectionals. If Harris can win again then he should be in a good spot to make it through New Castle. If he loses, however, then the danger is that he is put in the same ticket round bracket as Watts from North Central, the #1 heavyweight in the state. Roncalli will need these points and potential bonus points if they want to make a run at the top. I'm sure I missed some great matchups. Mater Dei is #1 and Cathedral is #2 in the Power Poll, but both of them have a LOT of tough matchups due to the depth of talent at the Mooresville and Perry Meridian regionals. Columbus East doesn't seem to have as many matchup issues - so who knows maybe them, Avon or Roncalli will be in the drivers seat in a couple of weeks

  2. Allow me to provide analysis for this weekend with probably the most unbiased opinion on this forum. Let me apologize in advance this will be slanted toward 3 teams who will be battling for the Ship. It is a 3-way race with Warren Central in the drivers seat. Throughout the year the Warriors have proved they are the better overall team than both the Rebels and Falcons. They defeated them at County by a healthy margin, unless we see a few upsets along the way I believe the Warriors will prevail once again. The Rebels defeated the Falcons at County and last week in Sectionals the Falcons returned the favor by winning with approximately the same margin. As you will see there are many matches that could sway the team race to either Perry or Roncalli based on a mild upset and/or a toss-up going the other way this time.....it will be a fun day at Perry! All 3 teams advanced their 14 wrestlers in the following fashion: Warren -- 10 Champs & 4 Seconds; Roncalli -- 6 Champs, 4 Seconds, 4 Thirds; Perry -- 7 Champs, 5 Seconds and 2 Thirds. 1st round matches (3-seed vs 2-seed): Warren vs Roncalli -- 2 (182 & 220 -- HUGE matches for team scoring) Warren vs Perry -- 0 106 This weight class belongs to Mr. Cottey, with a close battle for 2nd. Cottey has wins this season over #7 Carlton Perry and #15 Kody Glithero; it would surprise me to see him get a serious challenge before Saturday morning at Bankers Life. Second place should be a tough battle between the other state ranked contenders. This season Perry is 2-0 vs Glithero but the results were 3-1 & 3-2. If the Roncalli frosh can pull off the mild upset it would definitely tighten up the team race. Cottey, Perry, Glithero, Smith 113 Similar to 106 I see a clear cut favorite in #4 David Pierson. He finished 4th in the state last year and I am certain a deep run will occur again this year. The battle for 2nd should be hotly contested between Andrew Haggerty and Christian White. I don't believe they have faced each other and common opponents are not easily found. White has the better record, Haggerty has the tougher schedule. Wilson, from Roncalli, has a win over ss #8 Brac Hooper so he has the potential to find some magic and take 3rd place. Pierson, White, Haggerty, Wilson 120 The favorite is #4 Brayden Lowery, sitting at 32-0, but he has been challenged on 2 occasions from #12 Chris Stewart (3-0 & 4-2). Both wrestlers have faced an array of challengers this year, and although Stewart has 7 losses they have come at the hands of Littell, Montgomery, Lowery, etc.... With that said I still have Lowery being the winner in convincing fashion, regardless of the score. Lowery, Stewart, Morton, Donlan 126 #11 Jeivan Ross is the wrestler to beat here and ss #7 Sam Slivka will be the opponent giving it a try in the Finals. Ross owns 2 wins over Slivka this year (Fall & 8-0) but I believe Slivka will continue to close the game on Saturday. Slivka has 4 losses on the year (Rioux & Curtis) so he has been tested plenty of times and should be ready on Saturday. Ross, who was shot in the forehead last year while laying in bed, has had an outstanding year and I pull for him in any match outside of facing a Rebel. Ross, Slivka, Mckee, Cotter 132 #2 Alec Viduya should succeed on Saturday facing a well-known wrestler in ss #5 Aundre Beatty in the final. Alec has 2 wins over Beatty (20-5 & 15-5) and should continue that streak while moving on to New Castle. This weight was deprived of an outstanding wrestler in Gavin Rose when he was forced to withdraw due to an injury; who will seize the opportunity to gain an invite to New Castle that probably would not have been available? Viduya, Beatty, Taylor, Defreese 138 One of the best weights in the Regional. You have #2 Tyce Freije, #9 Gabe Smith and #12 Jarred Rowlett battling for that #1 seed at New Castle. Freije is the favorite having multiple wins over Smith and a Team State win over Rowlett. Smith defeated Rowlett earlier in the year but that semi-final match could go either way. I believe Goodwin (Southport) has been ranked this year in the semi-state so he is a wrestler you can not overlook...quite the entertainment should be provided from this group. Freije, Smith, Rowlett, Goodwin 145 Two thoroughbreds are gearing up the finals at this weight. #4 Aiden Warren and #5 Antwaun Graves are set to do battle for the Regional crown. Warren holds the advantage this year with a 4-3 UTB victory in the County so it is obvious the 2 wrestlers are evenly matched. Given the New Castle SS will have 3 other top 10 wrestlers waiting in the wings (Mosconi, Hall & Dunasky) being the top dog at Perry will provide you a 66% chance of avoiding one of them in the ticket round vs a 66% chance of wrestling one of them if you get 2nd. Graves, Warren, Wright, Page I will finish the last 7 weights tonight -- something called 'WORK' is bothering me at the moment.

  4. The Crown Point regional usually distinguishes itself as one of the better in the state, headlined by the 6 Duneland schools. The DAC had a bit of a down year, however, as Chesterton and Valparaiso both had relatively down squads this year. Wheeler, Hanover Central, and Lowell always have a few wrestlers in the mix...and this year is no different. Teams entered: Boone Grove Chesterton Crown Point Glenn Hanover Central Hebron Kankakee Valley Knox Lake Central LaPorte Lowell Michigan City New Prairie North Judson-San Pierre Valparaiso Wheeler Handicapping the first few classes... 106 - Stephen Roberson (28-2) of Crown Point is certainly the man to beat in this weight class. He has been steady in the top 2 or 3 in the EC SS, and will be the highest ranked wrestler in the field. His biggest challengers will likely be familiar foe as his Duneland counterparts litter the field. Roberson opens with the only other non-frosh as he faces off with fellow sophomore Nathan May (28-10), who presents as relatively tough 4 v 1 match-up. Look for a second round match with promising Chesterton frosh Luke Stento (26-11) and a rematch with EC SS #8 Johnny Cortez (27-10) of Lake Central whom Roberson has beaten comfortably twice, once by 1st-rd fall. Roberson's two losses are both to title contenders as he fell 7-2 to state #1 Alex Cottey of Perry Meridian and a 5-1 loss to state #4 Suhas Chundi of Carmel. 3rd place will likely be a match betwixt Stento and Valparaiso frosh Stefan Vitello (24-12), though Vitello probably has the toughest test in his first round match as he faces off with Austin Motyka (20-5) of Kankakee Valley in a 4 v 1 match.. Vitello had a heckuva turnaround after he fell to a tough 5th place finish in the DAC championships, at which he lost a barn-burner 10-9 vs Cortez in the semis and followed that with a harsh 11-2 loss to Stento. He would finish off the day on a high note, beating fellow CP regional contestant Brecken Joseph (16-14) of LaPorte, who gets Cortez 1st round. Vitello would turn all that around at the LaPorte sectional. His two second round pins were impressive, first beating May in the semis then avenging the loss to Stento emphatically with the fall. Looking forward to the potential rematch that would likely be for a coveted 3rd seed to avoid a number 1 seed hammer at SS. 113 - This is another class with a top contender that separates himself from the field, this time being Giovanni Diaz (28-1) of Wheeler, #4 State #2 EC SS. Diaz placed 8th last year at state at 106 and has had another tremendous year, with his only loss being to 120 EC SS #1 Riley Bettich of Crown Point by a score of 3-1. His 1st round match-up will be of zero excitement as he draws one of the two forfeits of the 1st round along with Nick Tattini (27-9) of Crown Point, who gets a bye even as a #2 seed because the LaPorte sectional had just two participants at 113 pounds. Tattni will likely face off with Chris Merrill (33-9) of Chesterton, who does draw a pretty tough #4 seed in upstart sophomore Michael Denvit (21-5) of Kankakee Valley. Still that's a tall order for Denvit to knock off the senior Merrill, who won the LP sectional with a 51 second pin of Dusty Young (29-14) of New Prairie. Young will get a tough #3 seed in Isaiah Ponce (22-12) of Lake Central, and I don't figure Young survives in that matchup as Ponce has wrestled a tough schedule and owns a couple good wins. At the Al Smith, a great midseason barometer, Zeke Seltzer of Cathedral rose to the occasion and knocked out several of the CP regional participants. He drew Ponce in the 2nd round and won by fall in 3:08. He would see Merrill the very next round and proceeded to win by tech fall 18-3. Seltzer would win it all over Martin Cruz of Merrillville, and Cruz is right back at it with the other top contender Jacob Moran of Portage at the Hobart regional. Most rankings have Moran as #1 and Seltzer #2 and then Diaz at #4 so this will be a great class to watch at the EC SS, even with Seltzer being at New Castle for SS I believe. Nick Tattini would fall in the 2nd round of the Al Smith, dropping it 4-2 to EC SS #6 Brodie Fogarty of Mishawaka. Fogarty would lose by a 54 second fall the next round to Cruz. So look for Merrill-Tattini and Ponce-Diaz in the 2nd round. At the DAC tournament, we would get a lot of key matchups that factor into play. Ponce would knock off Tattini in the 1st round 9-0, before losing to Cruz next round 14-5. Moran would beat Cruz 10-4 in the finals. Moran reached the finals by beating Merrill by fall in 3:14. In the consolations, Ponce would win fairly big over Merrill 21-10 before falling to Tattini 4-0. All three of the contenders are capable of an upset but I think Diaz is at another level. What will be interesting is who he gets to face in the final. Merrill beat Tattini in a 5-3 decision on Dec 6th, and with Merrill being a senior and Tattini a frosh we definitely have an experience factor. I like Tattini to bounce back here as I like how he has been wrestling, though Diaz did handle him in the sectional final by a score of 11-0. Merrill would have to reverse that big 21-10 loss in conference tourney vs Ponce to take the valued #3 spot. I'm not sure he totally turns it around, and I'll take Ponce as my 3rd place. 120 - This will be a tale of two wrestlers who are quite familar with each other in conference rivals #3 state/#1 SS Riley Bettich (30-1) of Crown Point and #13 state/#3 SS Danny Tolin (33-3) of Chesterton. These two did just face off recently for the DAC conference title, with Bettich winning by fall in the second period. They also share a similar loss at the Al Smith in foe Zeke Seltzer who defeated by way of a fall in 2:39, and then knocked off Bettich in the championship by virtue of a 7-2 SV decision. Neither has a particularly tall task as both face #4 seeds with losing records. Matt Adamczyk (24-3) of Hebron opens up the day vs LaPorte sectional runner up Jacob Abbott (10-6) of New Prairie, which figures to be a decent first round match although I like Adamczyk to advance to face off against Bettich. Abbott was dispatched off quickly in the LP sectional final as Tolin needed just 10 seconds for the stick, so he will look to bounce back as an underdog at the two seed. Adamczyk had a tough sectional semifinal that saw him elect to injury default in the second period against fellow regional participant Sebastian Cortez (24-9) of Lake Central, who opens up with LaPorte soph Angillo Mitchell (11-17). I think Bettich will be a tall order for Tolin to knock off for the upset, this time of year anything could happen but it looks like Bettich is peaking at the right time and likely takes this one rather easily. I foresee a bit more drama in the 3rd place match with Adamczyk and Cortez as we will get another chance to see how the match plays out in its entirety, while also taking into account Adamczyk may be contending with an injury of some sort. Have to go with Cortez with that being said. 126 - This class will feature one of the top wrestlers in the state pound for pound, and this kid dynamite is only a freshman in Crown Point's (31-0) Jesse Mendez. He has come in with a lot of fanfare and the kid has done nothing but deliver and live up to the hype. One feather is his cap was certainly the Al Smith where he punctuated his championship by knocking off state #3 senior Hunter Watts of JImtown by a score of 5-2. In case you forgot Watts is the defending champion at 120 pounds, not to mention his 2nd place finish as a soph at 113 and 6th place finish as a frosh at 106. Mendez is the real deal and I thought his semifinal tech fall victory at the Al Smith was equally impressive over state #7/ SS #2 Logan Wagner of ZIonsville. Those were huge victories for the frosh and he has continued that momentum all the way through sectionals last week, where he dispatched of two fellow CP regional participants by beating Roger Anda (14-16) of Boone Grove by fall in just :50 and then taking out Ryan Russell (17-11) of Lake Central in the finals by fall in 1:15. J.J. Blount (20-11) of North Judson is the unlucky soul that gets Mendez 1st round. The match-up that figures to be Mendez's opponent in the semis could be a more intriguing bout though I'm expecting sophomore Brandon Bolin (28-14) of Chesterton will be favored to win over Hanover Central's frosh Skylar Iverson (15-14). Iverson lost a quick decision by fall to Russell in just 22 seconds at the CP sectional, but did rebound for 3rd by pinning Anda in 3:53. On the other side of the bracket LaPorte sectional champion Jak Krouse (22-9) of Valparaiso will open with Anda while Russell faces off with Christian Szalajko (29-10) of New Prairie. Look for a rematch between the DAC foes Krouse and Russell, who faced off for 5th place at the DAC championships with Russell coming away with a 7-3 victory. I'll stick by that result and predict Russell into the finals to be fodder for a Mendez championship. If those predictions hold up that would set up a 3rd place match between Bolin and Krouse, which would be a rematch of the sectional championship which Krouse must have won at the buzzer as it shows his fall coming at exactly 6:00. It should be noted that at the DAC conference meet Chesterton had a reserve wrestling at 126 in junior Ethan Mahaffey (6-3 entering the DAC meet), and Mahaffey had a pretty strong day and ended up finishing 4th. En route to this finish he would upset Russell 9-8 in the 1st round before falling in the semis by pin in just 20 seconds by the hammer that is Brock Peele of Portage. Mendez would beat Peele 6-0, btw, for the DAC title. Mahaffey would also score another upset by beating Krouse 6-0 to reach the 3rd place match. 132 - Another top heavy class, heavy hitter senior Andres Moreno (21-0) of Lowell will certainly be the man to beat. The state #6/SS #2, who placed 7th at 113, does have some injury concerns this year however...which came to a head at the Al Smith forcing Moreno to medically forfeit the highly anticipated match with state #3 Matt Gimson of Jimtown. Not sure what the injury is but hopefully Moreno is at or near 100 % this week, although I don't think Moreno will be seriously challenged this week...but Wawasee's Geremia Brooks (state #4) and Ricky Hegedus (state #10) of Portage will prove to be everything Moreno can handle at the EC SS. Looking to the semifinals, Moreno should cruise in facing an over-matched frosh Jack Madsen (12-18) of North Judson where he will face the winner of one of the better 1st round match-ups of the regional as a pair of seniors face off in Ben Bosold (20-11) of Lake Central and SS #6 Brayden Ruiz of New Prairie. The LaPorte sectional would feature a 2nd place finish for Ruiz, as he fell to Ethan Kaiser (29-11) of Chesterton by a 13-8 decision. Noteworthy is the DAC tournament here, as Kaiser didn't fare so well losing a match to Bosold in the consolation semis by fall in 1:54 before securing 5th place over fellow regional participant Jacob Dewes (20-16) of LaPorte by fall in 1:54. A bit of a wrench for handicapping this weight class has been the change in the line-up for Crown Point, as Colin Taylor has been ranked #8 or so in SS at this weight and also participated at Al Smith for his weight. However for the tournament it appears Taylor has moved up to 138 and opened the door for part time varsity starter Jacob Carter (14-6) to fill the 132 spot for CP. Carter would make the most of this opportunity, scoring a big semifinal win over Bosold by fall in 2:58 before falling in the finals to Moreno, also by fall in 1:17. Carter will draw Dewes in the first round and I have him moving on to meet Kaiser in the semifinals, who will need to beat Damian Ruoff (19-19) of Wheeler to get there. In the DAC semifinals, Kaiser would drop a 7-3 decision to Taylor so I really think we have a true toss up match here. I'm going to go with Kaiser after he rides the momentum of the LP sectional title. In the 3rd place match I have Carter rebounding to score a 3rd place finish over Ruiz of New Prairie. Will continue my research and handicap another handful tomorrow.

  7. Maybe not as much as the cost the wrestler incur when he can’t/doesn’t pay that fee then has to wrestle someone who had that extra day to gain additional weight and energy before their morning match. Kinda seems like your paying to get that slight morning advantage.

  8. All I know that in 2015 we were at ihop at 12 midnight celebrating on a school night! Great to see more and full mats. With that said, the late night kinda added to the whole experience (in some weird way). With all that said, it feels like it was yesterday. For those familes that participated at Center Grove.... You are about to start the high school journey. There will be highs and lows. Just enjoy it all and soak it all in. It will all be over in a blink of an eye!

  9. The biggest difference is the other events offer the early weigh-ins a few hours before the normal weigh-ins, not 12+ hours ahead of time. We already had a Ben Davis person telling how they have a hard time with number and off-season participation due to money, this just makes this sport even more expensive just to be able to compete.

  10. The problem with today's society and especially message boards is that people want to equate "hating" or "not liking" or "against" with any criticism or opinion at all. In general people's panties get wadded up way too quickly. No one is hating or disliking Boonville. They are just speaking a combination of the truth (level of competition) and opinion (certain matches won't be close). It has nothing to do with one's preference of Boonville. Now is the time, rather than whine on a message board, to step up and prove people wrong. The 3 wrestlers mentioned all have great records and I don't doubt they are good wrestlers. I just don't see them competing with Ross, Egli and Lee. Could they finish 2nd? Sure. Will they all qualify for SS? Probably. Are they good enough to take the next step and qualify for State? Can they pull an upset this weekend? We shall see. But take comments for what they are.... opinions that aren't personal

  12. By JEREMY HINES Thehines7@gmail.com Matt Lee and Eli Dickens are practice partners in the Evansville Mater Dei wrestling room. They are good friends, they are both juniors and they are both ranked No. 1 in their respective weight classes. The similarities don’t end there. The two are soft spoken and humble. They have extremely similar voices, so much so that it’s hard to differentiate them if talking on the phone. They both have a 3.9 grade point average. “On the wrestling mat they both like to push the pace,” Wildcat head coach Greg Schaefer said. “They are both students of the sport and they love fine tuning techniques. They are both competitive. They don’t like giving up anything. They just push each other and the other guys in the room.” In fact, the two are so similar that coach Schaefer has a hard time finding any differences. “I don’t really know how they are different,” Schaefer said. “There isn’t a lot of differences that I know of. There are a lot more similarities than differences.” Lee also struggled to think of a difference. “We are pretty similar,” Lee said. “We are really good friends and practice partners and our styles are similar.” Dickens was the only one that could offer up some differences between the two. “I guess the main thing that separates us is our setups,” Dickens said. “He is more of a high crotch guy and I’m more of a getting ankles and sweep singles kind of guy.” Lee, who is the younger brother of Indiana legends Joe Lee and Nick Lee, is currently 30-0 on the season and holds the top ranking in the 145-pound class. He finished seventh the last two years in a row and is hoping to climb the ladder more this year. “It was a good feeling to place at state,” Lee said. “But you can’t be truly satisfied unless you get first. It’s always good to be at the top. I was happy to place, but I wanted more. I was hungry for more. That pushed into this year and drives me.” Being the younger brother of Nick (won state in 2015, now wrestles for Penn State) and Joe (won state in 2016 and 2017) hasn’t put a lot of pressure on Matt. “People always talk about the pressure of being their younger brother,” Matt said. “I don’t feel that pressure. I talk to them and they give me advice. They help me as much as I allow them to. I keep them as a source of information. I don’t pry them to learn everything they know, but if I need help I can always go to them.” Matt said watching Nick wrestle for Penn State makes him nervous. “I’ve heard how it’s hard on parents to watch their kids wrestle sometime and watching Nick wrestle I know what they are going through now,” Matt said. “I didn’t understand that before. I get more nervous for Nick’s matches than I do for any of my own.” Dickens has not placed in state so far, but he did qualify last year. This season he defeated former No. 1 ranked Elliott Rodgers 4-3 and that catapulted him to the top spot in the 152-pound weight class. “It was pretty amazing to see that I was ranked No. 1,” Dickens said. “I try not to think of it too much, but it was exciting. It gave me more confidence and belief in my ability. I knew that I could beat anyone, but that just solidified that idea in my head.” One big key for Dickens is that he doesn’t have to worry about his weight like he did last season. He feels that has helped him to be stronger and not focus so much on the weight aspect of the sport. “I had a huge growth spurt last year where my body wanted to grow mid-season,” Dickens said. “This year I’m wrestling up three weight classes and I feel so much healthier.” Matt is currently 30-0 on the season and Eli is 31-2, with both of his losses coming to out of state wrestlers. Both Matt and Eli are hoping to wrestle in college, but neither have decided where they want to go. Matt enjoys watching television, playing games and watching movies on weekends when he’s not wrestling. “I’m a pretty average kid,” he said. “Probably my favorite thing to do is eat, but you can’t do a lot of that during the season. I just like to try to find fun in the small things. I’m just normal and I like hanging out with my friends.” Eli enjoys going to his Bible study on Wednesday’s with his youth group. “I feel that it really builds me spiritually and gets my mindset right,” he said. “I focus on God and the bigger picture.” The two will compete Saturday in the Evansville North regional. “I don’t want to sound boring,” Schaefer said. “But they are both just awesome kids that work really hard. I hope they are able to accomplish their goals.” View full article

  15. I was there for that 13 hour day. People saw Shenandoah pop up in the 1A polls the last couple of years. If they would have been able to keep that middle school group together, they would have competed for a state title. They had the Williams kid that lost to Jack Kiser in the finals in OT (moved away). They also had Jordan Slivka, Dallas Pugsley (SQ), Hayden Lohrey (lost to Asa in the finals that year and looking for his 3rd trip to the bank this year) AJ Black 2x State runner up, and Silas Allred (you may have heard of him). John Slivka did a great job building that program when these kids were in middle school before they moved to Cathedral. I can’t imagine seeing a better 1A team.

  16. The kids are buying a big weight allowance as the kids that weighed in on Saturday night are probably 2-5lbs heavier. They are able to eat two decent meals before they hit the mats while the ones that weigh-in on Sunday morning only get a small breakfast before they hit the mat. There is a big difference in giving the kids a couple hour "advantage" to weighing in versus a 12+ hour advantage. The other events that offer VIP weigh-ins only allow it for a certain number of individuals and not everyone. I'm not a big fan of the VIP weigh-ins period, but 12+ hours ahead of time is even more out of line. I have a feeling this was done to be a money grab as the $20 can add up pretty quickly especially if half the participants weighed in early.

    Wrestlebacks question

I think you may need the Ryan Reynolds meme again!!
    1 point
  22. Obviously a very big topic this time of year.... just some thoughts on wrestlebacks at each level. Sectional - we have them after the pigtail matches. So as long as kids are seeded correctly and non-seeded kids are placed in pigtail rounds I think this is a good way to run the Sectional. Regional - You wrestle your way into your seed from Sectional and since only 2 Sectionals feed into a Regional there is no luck of the draw. Keep the same. Semi-State - Biggest opportunity for wrestlebacks but if you only do wrestlebacks after the 1st round then people will start asking for wrestlebacks all the way through and 16 man brackets cant be run in 1 day without running into the 5 match rule. Also most of the time the Semi State is wrapping up in the evening. To add Wrestlebacks might only add a couple hours but that means the event is going until late evening and the length of Saturdays is a big discussion regarding what is killing the sport (I know this applys much less cause most of these kids and families would gladly stay longer at this level but its still an issue). There also might not be the support of the HS admins as this would mean kids out on roads later in Feb when weather could be an issue and some are traveling 1-2 hours to get to their SS. There will always be bad draws and upsets. I say leave it the same. State - While it might not seem as if time would be an issue with the big break taken before the finals I dont think that break can be eliminated as they clear out BLF and re-admit everyone but there is more of an opportunity at State because it is 2 days. All that being said, I don't necessarily see the value. It might help with some recruitment but as out of season tournaments are becoming bigger and bigger with more and more coverage from flo and others I only see this helping a very few and the IHSAA isnt going to change for just a few. All in all it probably makes the most sense to look at WB for semi-state but time and matches make it the most difficult to implement. Plus we wouldnt get the 7 page thread on "death draws" and "need for wrestlback" in the forum to keep us entertained the week before SS!

  23. I don't think anyone on here thinks Boonville is in the same league (team wise) as Mater Dei. However, Tecumseh and Wood Memorial are in the Castle Sectionals and Boonville would need to compete against them for seed purposes. If you look at opponents outside of their conference and sectional seeding purposes...they compete against Reitz, Union County, Southridge, and Gibson Southern...not to mention Castle (sectional seed). Those teams aren't Mater Dei quality either...but who is in SW Indiana. I see it more through the lens of UCF and Bosie State in NCAA Football. When smaller schools start building up a program and competing well...its difficult for them to get quality meets with bigger, more traditional power house schools. Nobody wants to pick them up or their schedules are already set. Anyway, they've got some tough kids this year...we'll see how they preform.

  24. I don't think it's necessarily hating on Booneville because the athletes are beating the guys that they are competing against. It's more that the record doesn't always give a fair description of how good or not the athlete will compete against a proven quality opponent.

    Alternate Question

. . Regionals to Semi‐States – The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place contestants in each weight class will advance to the semi‐ state. 1. Alternates – If it becomes necessary to provide an alternate for any contestant eligible to advance, the following procedure will be used: a. The alternate may be officially weighed in immediately after the end of the official weigh‐in period. b. The 1st alternate will be the last individual defeated by the champion who did not advance by placing. c. When a 1st place contestant is unable to make weight or weigh‐in and wrestle, the 2nd place contestant shall be advanced to the position vacated, the 3rd place contestant shall be advanced to the position vacated by the 2nd place contestant, and the 4th place contestant shall be advanced to the position vacated by the 3rd place contestant. d. When a 2nd place contestant is unable to make weight or weigh‐in and wrestle, the 3rd place contestant shall be advanced to the position vacated and the 4th place wrestler shall be advanced to the position vacated by the 3rd place contestant. e. When the 3rd place contestant is unable to make weight or weigh‐in and wrestle, the 4th place contestant shall be advanced to the position vacated by the 3rd place contestant. f. Flagrant Misconduct – The advancement procedure above shall also apply when a contestant has been disqualified for flagrant misconduct and is not permitted to advance to the next level of the tournament. C. Semi‐States to State Finals – The 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place contestants in each weight class will advance to the state finals. 1. Alternates – If it becomes necessary to provide an alternate for any contestant eligible to advance, the following procedure will be used: a. The alternate may be officially weighed in immediately after the end of the official weigh‐in period on Friday evening. b. The only alternate will be the 5th place contestant in that weight class from that site. c. The 5th place alternate will be the last individual defeated by the champion who did not advance. d. If it becomes necessary to provide an alternate for any contestant eligible to advance, the same procedure as used for the semi‐state will be used for the state finals.

  29. I don’t think it is arguable at all as to whether he is ONE of best 1A football players ever. I think that it is clear that he is, without any argument. What might be arguable is whether he is the single best 1A football player of all time. That is, I imagine some Brett Law fans, as well as maybe some others, would do some arguing about that.

  30. Are there any weights where there is a chance for a repeat of 2009? At 160 that year, 4 wrestlers (One from each SS) came into state finals undefeated. All 4 made it to the semifinals Mark Myers, Briar Runyan, Matt Todd, and Ross Powell. Runyan would win it all has this ever happened since then? Is there a chance this year?

    Rules question

Keep in mind the specifics of this situation and the rules as quoted directly from the 2018-19 NFHS Wrestling Rules book. Various situations have different criteria for what can be changed and the time line involved, specifically, tournament (this case) vs. duals. The term to focus on is "earned", not, awarded. Again, once the technical fall has been "earned" the offensive wrestler cannot lose. With regard to other near-fall situations, a 2 or 3 point near-fall may be earned, yet, not awarded for various reasons; most often to allow for the near-fall situation to be concluded or possibly escalated. such as, a 2 point near-fall being escalated to a 3 point near-fall within the same sequence. Near-fall is not awarded at the conclusion of fall, because, once a fall has been secured the near-fall no longer exists; near-fall is exactly that, a "near-fall" or almost a fall, therefore, once a fall has been awarded there is technically no longer a near-fall in that situation. That is why near-fall is not awarded at the conclusion of a fall.

    Rules question

If the offensive wrestler was subject to a defensive fall, after having 'earned' a technical fall, the match would then be stopped and the offensive wrestler would still be declared the winner; again, once the technical fall has been 'earned', the offensive wrestler cannot lose the match. If the technical fall is "earned" while the defensive wrestler is in near-fall criteria you simply hold off on awarding the near-fall score (that has already been "earned") to allow the offensive wrestler to continue to work for the fall until the near-fall situation has concluded; by fall or surrendering the near-fall scoring hold or maneuver and/or position. 2018-19 NFHS Wrestling Rules Page 23 Rule 5-1-4-a&b a. if a takedown or reversal, straight to near-fall criteria creates a 15-point advantage, the match shall continue until the near-fall situation has concluded. b. once the technical fall has been earned, the offensive wrestler cannot lose the match.

  36. 160-Deters vs Singleton Can Singleton stage off the high octane pursuit of Deters? Doesn’t get any easier in the finals as I believe who ever wins this match will have Sollars waiting for him. Singleton beat Sollars at the EMD Classic 4-0 Sollars dominated Singleton last week, 7-1. Only point scored by Singleton last week was a penalty point.

  37. Lee will win by tech or pin. Ross will win by 12 or more Boarman will win by 12 or more Egli will win by 8 or more. JMO... But i bet these predictions come pretty close come Saturday afternoon. you have to look at the competition that MD faces compared to the competition that Boonville faces. Boonville is a good solid team just not in MD's league. You will see Boonville at semi-state making some noise in the 1st round and podsibly the 2nd round depending the draws.

    Rules question

I think the only way this would happen is in a defensive pin situation. If the wrestler who was ahead by 15 never had his position change then the 3 near fall points never would have been awarded. But if he "scored" a reversal for the wrestler down by 15 then the match should have stopped when the position changed due to a 15 point spread. The 15 points would have happened before the 2 for reversal.

    2019-2020 Team State

Rules aren't changed from last year except for the one that was announced in all the IHSWCA minutes in the spring: teams have to have 7 guys to be counted toward classification. Classification won't be finalized until all the Forfeit data is finalized after this weekend, as always. No other rules have changed in the last 4 years. Sorry for the delay with Categories. We want them to be as accurate as possible, so we do the tabulations late in the year. We're all volunteers with full-time jobs, so if a key cog is consumed by his full-time life, we sadly get set back. I finally got the last pieces of what I needed at 2am, so we're pushing through to get it done this morning. Good luck today, everyone!
