  3. I know the IHSAA is short on officials, but this holiday I saw NCAA officials on high school mats creating quite a stir (bluntly, a black-eye on our sport). I'm gonna state the obvious - there is a difference in college & high school rules. The NCAA officials taking high school matches need to understand the differences, why there is a difference, and they should agree to call the high school rules when on a high school mat! The number of coaches with misconduct warning, team points taken, athletes losing their minds in the bleachers b/c they are shocked in the difference between calls per match at the same tourney, and even parents being removed b/c they were so upset after a finals match that was called by a NCAA ref... not calling stalling on the top man (stalemate instead) out-of-bounds reaction time (the need for it) potentially dangerous holds in high school we want coaches to approach us when they don't understand so they can be a better coach for this athletes in all situations Finally, the NCAA officials I watched do not apply for the IHSAA tournament series. Therefore, the coaches involved have no recourse, or voting power to rank these officials. We are putting our best wrestlers on the biggest stages over the holidays and our officials shouldn't try to upstage the athletes.

  5. I was at the same tournament and I've got to agree with ontherise on this topic. We all have different opinions on certain calls, but from what I saw the officiating was pretty darn good. We always are in need of more qualified officials so if you know someone that wants to be involved follow this: In order to become a licensed IHSAA wrestling official you can follow this link for details on the process.http://www.ihsaa.org...72/Default.aspx

  6. Why wouldn’t you want top level officials doing your matches? That is like saying you wouldn’t want top level coaching because it can be to intense come on man

  7. I would say I agree with some of this post and disagree with a lot. I am confused why we wouldn’t want better officiating. I was at the biggest holiday tournament and had probably the best seat in the house. While I don’t agree with all calls, to try to single out a couple officials because they you do not agree or want it the old way is plain dumb. There are a lot of officials that have a certain way they call matches not just “NCAA” officials. I would suggest that the officials in question are some of the best in the state.

  8. Should be a good one. Merrillville is very good this year from bottom to top and are always well coached

  9. Beep beep. I’ll remind all of you what EdP, Northside Indy, and Hamilton County deal with in spades: Vaginitis. Little Johnny doesn’t get a bloody nose perhaps in his whole life unless he wrestles. No bike or skateboard accidents....they’re in the basement playing Fortnight. They’re on the iPad getting an allowance to make their bed. The Carmel life is real and it’s an epidemic. I fight it daily with some youngster programs, but the struggle is real with these middle class kids. Kopnisky finally threw in the towel at Carmel. Most of the north side Indy schools are grinding to keep kids in the sport. Lacrosse, boys’ volleyball, and a slew of other sports are decimating wrestling. The CYO in Indianapolis has added 140 boys’ volleyball teams in competition with wrestling in the last 3 years. So, CoachP and many of us in Indy are marketing our asses off to preserve the sport. It might feel good for “The County” and the Indy County teams, but it is an assault to the sport. We’ll make it at Cathedral because we’ll find great, committed kids. However, I fear for the 75 kids in K-4 that end up prancing off to volleyball in 5th grade. Give me a violin, perhaps, but our sons are getting weaker. It pisses me off.

This is Jake’s dad. Thanks for the advice and kind words. We definitely knew going into the match yesterday Trizton was wrestling as well as anyone in 182 in Indiana. He is a great wrestler! And Jake was excited for the opportunity but probably let his emotions get the best of him and got off his game a bit during the match. Anton (Jake’s coach) had a talk with him after the match and it was a great learning experience for him hopefully come tourney time. He is still pretty new to wrestling and matches like the one with Trizton will just make him better in the long run. Good luck to you guys the rest of the way and hopefully we will see you guys again in Indy in February.

jake you are very tough especially being a ssq your first year.. trizton is like my nephew and I train him in off season and I wanted tell you that you did a solid job and don't get frustrated if you are in a tough match vs a very tough experienced young man..if you can keep your cool during those tough matches it'll help you a long way come tourney time.. you're a very good athlete keep working hard and don't let your temper hinder your growth..I had a talk with trizton about the exact same thing after you 2 wrestled and your match got lil heated... regardless if you were a foe at the time I am a wrestling fan first and I am a fan of a good wrestling stories like yours..so good luck the rest of the season and stay healthy young man!
