Dear 138 pound weight class at state finals, Congrats to all of you, lots of fierce competitors, and you should all be proud! Wrestling is the ultimate teacher of life lessons, so learn what you can from your experience! Kris Rumph You are a great wrestler and competitor and your interview showed some great character. You have overcome a lot in life and I hope you understand that your wrestling achievements can transfer to anything you chose to pursue in life. The Melloh family will look forward to seeing good things for you in the future, and will say a special prayer for Kris Rumph today at church. Looking forward to rooting for you, not against you! Blake Mulkey You are an awesome wrestler. Blake, you have a great wrestling future, and we wish you the best. Sometimes things don’t go your way, it will make you stronger if you let it. Dawson Combest We wish you the best at Uindy. It truly seems like yesterday that you and Zach were battling it out for ISWA state finals. I miss those days already. Uindy is getting a good one and we know you will do great in wrestling and school. Count your blessings son, you have an awesome support group with Columbus East wrestling family! That’s a good group! I will always hold Coach Trapp in high regard..... I saw how much he did for you guys with the youth program. What a great guy and mentor! Lastly, to my son, Zach Melloh With tears of pride, I want to tell you that I love you and I am so proud of you. My sadness only comes from knowing this chapter is over. I didn’t appreciate the ride like I should have while I was living it.......through wrestling, you have helped us grow as a family and expand our faith. So few people know what you have been through to get to where you were yesterday. But God does and your family does, and we are proud to call you our son and your siblings are proud of their brother. Part of trying to live a Christ centered life means that sometimes the target on your back gets bigger. It’s ok, keep fighting the good fight. Keep grinding and doing the right things in life. With a heart full of pride for the young man you have become, looking forward to the next chapter. Your biggest fan club, Dad, Mom, Corinne, Alex, and Cecelia (Nick Melloh)

  2. 1.) Congrats to Cathedral. I’m not sure anyone who hasn’t been through it truly understands how hard it is to win an Individual State Title let alone a Team State Championship. 2.) I didn’t cuss or anything like that. I was booted and deserved to be because I left the mat and came back screaming again. I was told that by Mr. Faulkens. 3.) I know I shouldn’t have come back on the mat. Thanks to him for allowing me to stay in back of venue. I lost it and would hope I could keep my compusure in the future. I’ve never been tossed out before that I remember. I deserved it. I’ve already told my assistants to pull me from the mat. I don’t see this situation repeating itself, though 4.) I am not ever going to sacrifice a kid’s dream of a state title. Brayton Lee is the ONLY kid I have ever coached that I told I must have bonus points from at Individual State. Probably the first and last. He’s special. I never worried about my actions causing a team title. We are a family here. I was able to meet with my team since Mr. Faulkens allowed me To stay in the venue. I told them I was sorry I was unable to corner them. (FYI I don’t corner BLee. Ayersman negotiated that.) Lol. Immediately, Nathan Walton said, “Coach you have prepared us and we would want you to do the same thing for each of us.” 5.) I was out of control and returned to the mat after waking off. That equals getting tossed. I have no issue with it. Most people hate me. That fuels me and our program. I have enough friends and I’m not looking to win a popularity contest. As long as the Mishawaka And Brownsburg Wrestlers and fans love me that’s what I care about. Talk to them. I have 100% administrative support here, which I have never had before. 6.) Why did I lose it even though i shouldn’t have? It is NOT an opinion or judgement call. In the casebook - look it up - it literally says the front-headlock position is a stalemate. It’s cut and dry. Not debatable. It was the wrong call. Period. Doesn’t matter if we were snapping or trying to score. Makes no difference. Says stalemate. Watch the film. Blake is my guy. He is facing me in 30 second OT. Im snapping to mat. He does exactly what I tell him to do. I know the rules. Then, it costs him a chance for his state title. I care about my wrestlers. Our system is messed up. I could not care less about a team title then. I care about Blake and his goal. If he and they win, we win. 7.) It is what it is. Cathedral was freaking impressive. Blake’s opponent is a stud and seems like an outstanding young man. Just like Blake. I probably shouldn’t post, but I will. Discussing wrestling I think is good for our sport and my thoughts are always open for anyone. Snyder

    Zach Melloh Family

Nick and Zach We have nothing but the ultimate amount of respect and appreciation for you and your family.. it does seem just like yesterday that Zach and Daws battled as youngsters, Zach always pushed Dawson to be better and share a special friendship.. Zach is a outstanding young man way past being a outstanding wrestler.. Purdue got the total package in Zach .. We will be cheering and following him and his career... Blake Mulkey Thank you for being such a great kid and bringing out the best in the Columbus East opponents (especially Daws) , after the matches were over , you were back to always joking and being a good kid to be around ...We wish you nothing but the best with your next stop ... Kris Rumph The semifinals was the first time that Daws got to wrestle you but of course we had heard so much about your ability and skills , you didn’t disappoint on your showing on that big stage.. Dawson said that was the most fun he ever had in a match , of course I was beyond nervous but you both pushed each to overtime coming up with the win .. Congratulations to you and your family... This weight class was very deep and talented .. Every round , it seemed like we had a ranked wrestler with a competitive spirit to the end .. it was truly a life experience and privilege to be in the mix.. The Combest Family

  7. Wow. I haven't been on the boards..I can't believe how many people think this was called correctly. Two seconds is a long time, friends. It's questionable whether he had part of both scapulae or both shoulders on the mat at the same time. It's no where NEAR questionable whether either of those criteria happened for two seconds. That was way, way too fast. Not even in the same timezone as a pin. I'm shocked people are defending it. "Go flat and you put yourself at the ref's mercy." What? Am I at his mercy if I let myself get taken down out of bounds or after the buzzer? Touch falls are not the rule. I shouldn't be at the mercy of random misapplication of rules. Seriously, I'm blown away by how many people could care less if a pin is 2 seconds. Yikes.

  8. Here are a few things that impressed me today and a few that didn’t. Impressive 1.Asa Garcia wrestled like a man on a mission. The way he handled Smiley and Mills was awesome. 2. Rumph’s takedown game. He was fast, strong, and was scoring points with ease. The way he scored on Lee and Melloh...wow. 3. Rader, not sure if it was the way he went after it in the final or his mustache. 4. Fattore-the way he handled the controversy, with class. 5. The beard game in the Avon and Wabash corner was strong! 6. I hate to admit it, but Cathedral wrestled lights out all tournament series. Not impressive (not in any order) 1. Fair’s singlet, sorry but I like the Perry blue 2. Tonte’s shoes, I thought Krulik was killing something? 3. I had Mulkey winning it all, but I was not impressed with the way he wrestled. I wished he would have been more aggressive. 4. Little Rooks. I also had him winning, but he just didn’t let it go. That four point stance I think hurts him more than helps. 5. The lack of breakfast food offered to all of us early risers at Bankers life. 6. We didn’t get a Mongolian protest. When Snyder took off the tie I thought it was coming

  10. My vote would go to Parris. Three sport athlete, three state titles and a 3rd, record for most career falls in the state tournament, #1 ranked nationally. Hard to argue against Lee, but he missed state his freshman year and is a one-sport specialist. That's about the only difference between his and Mason's resume.

  11. How about Blake Boarman taking 3rd on a leg that will need surgery? He'll have some great wrestlers to get past, but as well as he wrestled on a bum leg today, I could be convinced he might have won it this year if 100% healthy. Key word might.

    Toughest Semi-State?

Congratulations to all of the young wrestlers who competed at this year's state finals. With the help of their coaches, officials, fans, tournament workers, venue workers, singers (they were awesome), color-guard, parents, family and friends it was another outstanding event to witness (sorry to anyone that I forgot to list as it is truly a team effort). That being said, which semi-state was the toughest to qualify from? There are many ways to interpret "toughest" and I realize that others may disagree with this approach, but that disagreement is about Indiana wrestling and if we are discussing Indiana wrestling then it is a good discussion. Points in my opinion are the best way to compare. It takes into account place-finishers (+16 1st, +12 2nd, etc...), it takes into account dominance (+2 fall, +1.5 tech fall, +1 major decision) and it takes into account (to a lessor degree) the tougher competition by advancing through the championship bracket (+2 advancement) versus advancing through the consolation bracket (+1 advancement). All of this being said, looking at the past two years, it appears to me that the New Castle Semi-State is strengthening its claim to being the toughest semi-state to advance to the State Finals through. Region?!?

I get it. It would be a lot fun to see the region get shut down at the state tournament due to some of the region arrogance that surfaces from time to time. Not to mention nobody likes to see the same winners all the time. It is fun to see giants fall. However, if you do the math, they still won more than their share of championships and got like 24 of the 28 placers they would have needed for their share of the medals. Down a little from past years? Yes for sure, but it took a long time for this person to finally get to make this statement LOL. Region boys as a whole did not wrestle well and some strange things happened like Poynter getting hurt, and Fattore pinning himself. Maybe Mudflap was the bus driver that kept the buses running Friday night and early Saturday morning! Just saying.

  16. As I was leaving “The Bank” tonight, which was during the 170 final, I saw Brayton in the hallway with about 5 younger kids talking with them and letting them hold his Medal and put around there necks.... I thought to myself how awesome that was only a few minutes after he had received his Medal.... I think with the example of this fine young man leading the way, the state of Indiana wrestling is in very good shape!!!

No ones is talking about it but I thought this was the best match of the night. They really went at it and left it on the mat. I want to say congratulations to Conner for getting it done when most people thought that Nathan was the favorite. Great match guys.

  21. I like how Eric McGill, one of the most consistent refs in the state, can't ref in the state tournament because of the system put in place. Votes and politics hold refs out that should be there. He Hits stalls/stalemates like they should be called. IMO he is the best. Dang the guy can ref D1 college meets but he isn't good enough to officiate our state tourney? There has to be a system to where the guys that are out of the game do not get put in place, I am sorry if anyone feels different but MAT 3 there were 2 bad calls that might have been the worse I have ever seen, Great job to Mulkey and Fattore, but both of them did not get the officiating that should be at the state finals. The consistency of calls was very bad, again IMO. I hate to see refs decide the match. Mulkeys match was based upon a judgement call that was terrible, and could not be reviewed, but Fattore match do we implement the replay at the state tourney to avoid these calls? Do we bring up a DANGER rule to where if a kid is on his back in danger the ref can let him know? What about the 2 second rule on the back, are we not implementing that anymore? It is over and in the past now, but I would hate to see this happen to more kids. To Mulkey and Fattore, I am truly sorry this happened to you guys. I know for a fact that your guys future is bright, hold your head high!

  23. a couple questionable calls shouldn't over shadow the fact that the officiating was really good overall. A lot of really good officials were in the stands and working tables we need to change the system and get the best officials there on the floor, We might need a Officials ranking page. Kinda joking but also very serious

  24. Just saw the video on FB, my biggest issue is that by the time the red got into position there definitely was no fall so he was just assuming he was flat before. I’ve always been told if you don’t see it you don’t call it

  26. I personally believe that was a BS call. I feel bad for this young man but can say I became more of a fan of him and his coaches for having class by not throwing a fit and taking it as a bad break, unlike someone did earlier before this match.

    Melloh and Mulkey

Knew there would be a huge thread on this, but damn gonna question a mans integrity? Integrity is not what I'd question but maybe the fact most of the refs are getting up there in age and the ability to keep up with 17/18 yr olds and make snap judgment calls, might be the factor that needs addressed. Every year most of the finals refs are the older more experienced guys as should be, but its time some younger guys to get some of that experience, and yes it will take more young guys getting involved on that side of things, lots of good young coaches not a lot of good young refs. But to question his integrity is total BS!!
    2 points
  28. The call is not debatable in any way you try to defend. As someone else mentioned, there is no such thing as situational stalling in the rule book. If he’s in a front headlock and not using it, it’s stalemate and stand them up. If that’s stalling, then almost every wrestler should have been hit multiple times from when they initiated a front headlock. If the defensive wrestler gets elbow control from a front headlock, it’s neutralized very quickly......not stalling but stalemate since no progress is being made by either wrestler. What makes it worse is Mulkey was bouncing Mellohs head off the mat multiple times while having good angles for a possible takedown attempt if he wanted.

    State Recap per ME

First off I always enjoy the event, 19th straight year either being on press row or sitting in a suite. I am spoiled and unfortunately that time is coming to an end. I did a preview of each weight where I picked a winner, upset and toughest matches. I won't get into my toughest matches but let's say I had plenty correct and missed on a few. I only picked 6 out of the 14 Champs which is very crappy BUT 9 of my upset picks won out of 14. I believe I can spot the diamond in the rough (probably because I find my golf ball there frequently) but I need to expand my "vision" and start to believe that wrestling does exist outside of Central Indiana....sorry Evansville, East Chicago and Fort Wayne. 106 3 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 6 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 3, Evansville 1, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 3, East Chicago 1 CHAMP -- Jacob Moran, ranked #1 - East Chicago (Regional Champ, 3rd at Semi-State) Question -- Will Moran bump to 120/126 to prepare for College? 113 3 Seniors, 8 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 2 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 3, Evansville 2, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 1 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 2, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 1 CHAMP -- Brayden Curtis, ranked #1 - Fort Wayne (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Curtis is the favorite next year so will the other 7 juniors avoid him to get their state title? 120 3 Seniors, 5 Juniors, 5 Sophomores, 3 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 3, Evansville 3, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 1 // ONE UNRANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 1, Fort Wayne 1 CHAMP -- Hunter Watts, ranked #1 - Fort Wayne (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Will Watts make it 3 Final appearances in a row or will one the many underclassmen knock him off? 126 8 Seniors, 3 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 2 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 3, Evansville 4, Fort Wayne 1 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 1, Evansville 3 CHAMP -- Asa Garcia, ranked #1 - Evansville (Regional 2nd place, Semi-State 2nd place) Question -- Will Garcia, Rooks, Viduya choose the same weight again to battle for the top spot? 132 3 Seniors, 9 Juniors, 4 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 2, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 1, Evansville 1, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 1 CHAMP -- Graham Rooks, ranked #1 - Evansville (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Big class of Juniors, which one has a terrific summer/fall and takes over the drivers seat for their 1st state title next year? 138 13 Seniors, 2 Juniors, 1 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 1, Evansville 3, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 1, Evansville 2, East Chicago 1 CHAMP -- Kristian Rumph, ranked #5 - East Chicago (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Losing 13 seniors and many state appearances, what underclassman seizes the opportunity to make a name for themselves next year? 145 5 Seniors, 7 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, 2 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 3, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 1, Evansville 2, Fort Wayne 1 CHAMP -- Jordan Slivka, ranked #3 - New Castle (Regional Champ, Semi-State 2nd place) Question -- Slivka has a great room and motivation to be a 2x but can he withstand the barrage of returning underclassman to keep the title? 152 7 Seniors, 3 Juniors, 5 Sophomores, 1 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 3, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 1 // ONE UNRANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 1, East Chicago 1 CHAMP -- Brayton Lee, ranked #1 - Evansville (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Now that Mr. Lee has vacated his permanent spot (winners circle) who realizes their dream of winning a title? 160 8 Seniors, 6 Juniors, 2 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 3, Evansville 2, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 2 CHAMP -- Nick South, ranked #5 - Evansville (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- 1/2 of the wrestlers are gone but the champ is not; will South continue his tear and dominate the division? 170 11 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 1 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 4, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 2 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 1, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 1 CHAMP -- Noah Warren, ranked #1 - New Castle (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Highest returning place was 5th place Mahan; weight class is wide open and who has the summer that puts them over the top? 182 12 Seniors, 1 Juniors, 3 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 1 , Evansville 3, East Chicago 1, Fort Wayne 3 // ALL RANKED FINAL 4 -- Evansville 2, Fort Wayne 2 CHAMP -- Conner Graber, ranked #4 - Fort Wayne (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Allred is the only returning wrestler from the Final 8; will he finish on top of the podium? 195 12 Seniors, 4 Juniors, 0 Sophomores, 0 Freshman FINAL 8 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 3, East Chicago 2, Fort Wayne 1 // ONE UNRANKED FINAL 4 -- New Castle 2, Evansville 1, East Chicago 1 CHAMP -- Lucas Davison, ranked #1 - East Chicago (Regional Champ, Semi-State Champ) Question -- Final 8 were all seniors, which is usual, but it gives many wrestlers a great chance to win next year. Cathedral on FIRE

MD wrestlers is on another level back then... but their fans were on another level too. At state every year you could hear them roar and take over the crowd. Craig Weinzapfel beat me in about 25 seconds and it was the worse pain I had ever been in during a wrestling match. Those guys were brutal!

Sour grapes for sure. Jordan got what he deserved, a state championship. Beat the #1,2,,and 4th ranked wrestlers in his weight class.

  36. During his interview, I have to hand it to him. He put praise where praise should be first and everything else after. Not to many high school kids would have said what he did during his interview. Good job kid and good luck in the future.

  37. I would have to throw Bryer Hall from South Dearborn in there. He wrestled one of the deepest and best Weight classes this year as a Freshman and he was a State placer this year. What will he do the next 3 years? Looks pretty solid and he has beat some tough competition.

Just wanted to say Blake is a great kid with a big future ahead of him. My wife and son got a chance to talk to them for the 1st time tonight and they are a class act. Can't wait to see more from this kid and we wish him the best on his surgery. Grats on pushing though the knee injury and placing 3rd. Shows lots of heart. Curtis Family

  40. Lol nah the old country buffet after our 5th place finish soothed my soul that year ?... but in saying that NC lost 4 times to the hands of EMD from 94-01...and it wasn't fun any of those times I promise lol..But emd beat everybody back then, so I don't dwell on it... the aura of invincibility they had back then was strong.. their fans also were a great weapon too.. you couldn't hear yourself think once they got going.. they def represented to the fullest!

It was one of the Perry Meridian Freestyle/Greco singlets. McClurg wore his on the opposite side in 2013 when he won.

That's a little different than a guy that graduated from a school half a century ago (approx lol). I get the basic concern though. I just don't think it had anything to do with the call. NONE of us do as no one else in his head. I can say this, and I'm sure I'll get hammered for it, but I'll bet any officials will agree with me. Again, I haven't officiated a game (I did baseball) in 25 years. But I can say that as an official you are working as hard as you can to get each call right and when you are in the middle of a close call your mind isn't thinking about which team is which. It's only after the action stops do you process things.

  45. I'll make the unpopular statement here.... in a tournament where every point counts, is it a good thing when one of the best wrestlers in the country leaves points on the table choosing to run a take down clinic rather than pin a guy? It's not a not on Brayton himself, but on the strategy used. I have no idea how close the final tally will be, but it would be tough to convince me that he couldn't have pinned his 3 opponents. Maybe not, but I think he could do anything he set his mind to today. Listening to Brayton's interview now. Sounds like an incredible kid. So take the "critique" with a grain of salt, but if you need the 1.5 points he left on the table, maybe I have a point.....

  48. Fattore might have been in defensive pin position, but by the time ref got into position to look, Fattore's shoulders were obviously up. He didnt even have a one count. Please note the rule book says 2 seconds got a pin. And when he was calling a phantom defensive pin on Fattore, Fattore adjusted his position, and Rader was in pin position. If youre going to call a controversial defensive pin in state semi finals, you better be sure and see it for two seconds, and not take the opposing coaches word for it and assume he was pinned. Some refs with big egos want the match to be about them, and not the kids. Aggregious call. I hope this ref looks at this video.
