  1. Going over the stats the county stat guru @Indysportsfan has put together. We lock in the rankings before the state tournament every year. 280 wrestler enter the state tournament ranked. Which at the time of sectionals is just recognition of their season. We do not and will not adjust them. Not for injury or bad draws. Of 240 ranked wrestlers we lost 7 going on to semi state. Thank you to everyone who has sent emails and messages. You are so important to the rankings.

    andres moreno

Well on the newest rankings I see from 1-25 has Moreno at #6. let's take a little closer look at the guys in front of Moreno. And see why the rankers would have them ahead of Moreno. At # 1 it is a no brainer. #1-Brayden Curtis- undefeated and is a returning state champion and also ranked in the nation. #2-Jose Diaz-state qualifier 2 years ago and placed 8th last year at this same weight class losing to eventual state champion 7-3 but inj defaulted his next 2 matches to get 8th. also placed 4th at IHPO beating some really good kids in a stacked weight.Undefeated at time of rankings.(lost twice to Moreno since) #3-Brayden Lowery- 3rd in state last year(losing only to eventual state champion) also still Undefeated. Has several great wins. Common opponent is Alex Petro- Lowery won 9-1 and Moreno won 6-3 #4-Andrew Black- State Runner up last year. Lost to #1 Curtis in OT at conference 6-4 #5-Blake Boarman- He just doesn't lose much.He is still Undefeated. As an EIGHTH grader Just a few weeks after High School State Finals was over he pinned runner up Hunter Watts and then beat 4th place finisher Brock Peele who Moreno beat this year 11-9 in OT. Finally the rankings aren't who they think will win the state championship. It's who is getting the best wins and wrestling the better competition and it gives them recognized. I personally think Moreno will win it this year but if I was a ranker then I'd have him at 6 at the time these came out.(has beaten Diaz twice since)

  3. There was some really high level wrestling that took place in case you missed it. I know most people are focused on Semi-State as well they should be I wanted to take a minute and mention a few observations. Probably one of the better semi finals I have seen in recent memory. Mahan and Lowe went back and forth with big moves and plenty of strength (side note is Warren was waiting for the winner) I would say Lowe was slicker and his gas tank was the difference. In the finals Noah Warren showed why is ranked number One. In the last two weeks he has pinned really high level competition in the first period. Noah pinned Lowe with a cradle that me and another Coach were looking at each other saying what was that exactly. I have a feeling two maybe all three of these guys get out next week at Semi State

  8. Revenge, domination and thrilling finales punctuated the Evansville North Regional. Let’s get to work! 106- Heritage Hills’ Sam Scott is no longer off the radar. The salty scrambler gave Mater Dei’s Cole Ross all he wanted plus some. Ross was able to score a last-second escape to win, 8-7. 113- Mater Dei’s freshman phenom Blake Boarman ran his season record to 30-0 and recorded his third win, in dominating fashion, over Castle’s Devon Casebolt. Boarman scored an early takedown and stayed on the accelerator, winning 9-0. 120- Mater Dei’s Kane Egli survived an upset bid in the semifinal. In a sectional final redux, Egli beat Central’s Cameron Amento 10-2 for his second regional title. 126- Not to be outdone by little brother, Clay Egli scored a 3-2 title win over Castle’s Carson Willis. A cat and mouse match, Willis went for a throw that Egli turned into “two”. 132- Another replay of the sectional final where Mater Dei’s Eli Dickens ran past Central’s Brayden Bethe, 13-4, to collect regional title number two. 138- Mater Dei Sophomore Matt Lee held off a feisty Matt Kincaid to win 6-4 and claim his second regional title. 145- Freshman Scott Fitts scored a third period takedown to make it 7-in-a-row for the ‘Cats. That was his third win of the season over Castle’s Jacob Freeman. 152- Few in the building had a tougher road to the top of the podium than Castle’s Robert Deters. The sophomore had to fend off North Posey’s Levi Miller, in double overtime, in order to advance to the final and face Mater Dei’s Macartney Parkinson. In an exciting chess match, Deters made an escape stand up for a 1-0 victory. 160- Gibson Southern’s Clay Singleton sloughed off his sectional loss to Mater Dei’s Nolan Weidner and earned a 6-4 victory. 170- North Posey’s Colton Gamblin continued to impress, registering two 6-0 wins and a pin en route to his title march over county rival, Mt Vernon’s Luke McGennis. 182- It looked like Castle’s Will Nunn was going to end Central’s Kiave Guerrier’s unbeaten season. Nunn kept the match close and scored at the end of regulation to send it to overtime. Appearing to be gassed, Guerrier came off the hash mark like a scalded cat and scored the winning takedown three seconds into the extra stanza. 195- The thrills kept coming as Castle’s Will Rolley and Reitz’s Andrew Koonce squared off. Down 4-2 in the second, Koonce landed a throw, put Rolley to his back…pin! Boom went the dynamite. 220- Mater Dei’s Michael Boots registered a first period ankle pick over Memorial’s Alex Lichlyter and never looked back, cruising to a 5-2 win. 285- Vincennes’ Spencer York and Mater Dei’s Roman Graves reprised their sectional final in thrilling fashion. In overtime Graves got in on a shot and TWO…no--York gets around and is awarded the takedown. Great match; I would like another look at the last sequence. Mater Dei scored 229 points while Castle was second with 136.5

  10. The worst argument I have heard about wrestlebacks is that it would eliminate the ticket round lol Like come on guys there would still be a ticket round it's called the round of 6 ( though I like the idea of a 32 man state bracket which would also it round of twelve )
    2 points
  11. So the death draw of either Mills/Garcia vs Rooks in the ticket round didn't materialize, but those two matchups are almost as bad. No matter what happens, two very deserving wrestlers will not make it to Bankers Life. I know many here believe this to be the beauty of our tourney, but I just can't agree. Let the wrestlers determine who the 4 most deserving that day are through wrestlebacks.

Curtis -state champ Lowery-4th black-2nd I guess these guys would say they have wins moreno doesn’t also. I would guess a comp would be the Mater Dei freshman Boarman who as a 8th grader defeated watts and peele. Which is comparable to Moreno’s wins over Triana and peele

  17. Let's be honest for a second. You NEVER gave North a chance before it even started as apparent by your previous postings. Their concessions moved freely. The restrooms were far superior than that of Castles. They were clean and always had supplies much unlike Castles. I sat near the lower level and the view was great. Yes, there was a hiccup with getting the matches in order at first, but were quickly ironed out. If a little walking is against your likings, you must really hate having to walk a couple blocks to get into Ford Center. North- A- Hook- D+

  21. It's amazing how well you do.Some people really just don't realize how good you are at this.Id really love to know what your overall percentage is of ranked wrestlers that had the possibility of going to state if we had wrestlebacks.i guess maybe the percentage of ranked wrestlers that get eliminated by another ranked wrestler. My whole point is when a ranked wrestler is eliminated by another ranked wrestler then that hurts your percentages even tho their is nothing you could have done different. For example right now you have a max number of ranked guys that can make it to state due to drawing another ranked opponent and only 1 of them can go . In two matches alone you are gonna lose 2 guys that would more than likely place top 6 with probably any other draw in the state except for a very few. For example it is going to hurt your overall percentage when Mills/Willis and Egli/Garcia wrestles no matter who wins.Im trying to figure a way to find out what your possible percentage is and what your actual is but I am just not smart enough. I know what I think is the right way to do it but I can't. Maybe if a ranked wrestler wrestles a ranked wrestler, or if a wrestler moves out of state during tournament, or gets injured. Just the things that are out of your control or anyones control then just don't count that for you or against you. If we had wrestle backs I really think you would have a crazy high percentage. Very good job

  28. Wow that escalated quickly. I just want to say that class 1A wrestling is dying! I know because we see it every year. And I strongly feel like the reasoning is because the kids from these small schools can't stand a chance to these big schools. The numbers sometimes are so low that they can't even have a good practice. They have dual meets that consist of getting mopped on the mat, learning nothing. So eventually they give up the sport. (Not saying I agree with that) but they do. You aren't going to get a "good" coach willing to move to a program that has a total team of 5. So it's a never ending cycle of being stuck with a mediocre coach who just coaches wrestling during football's off season. Again I know this is true because I see it every year. Class wrestling may actually give kids a chance to compete with someone their own size. As well as not overinflating class 3-4 wrestlers to thinking they are better than they are because they stack their records, mopping the mat, with 1A wrestlers all season. My kid is a decent wrestler but I wouldn't want him earning a championship title and holding his head high if it's because he smooth sailed through to the top; he'd never know his true potential. Class wrestling isn't a "everyone gets a trophy" scheme, it's what makes sense and is fair. Still allowing true warriors to advance. *MY OPINION* if allowed
    1 point
  29. That's the biggest problem I have with the sport specialization crowd: the cost. It's not a fair playing field. Someone who may have the talent but doesn't have the opportunities that another kid does gets left behind due to circumstances well beyond control. I think it's great that kids can play sports year-round. I think it's terrible that money has become such an important factor in it. The commercialization of youth sports is a HUGE problem. Too many people just using it to make money instead of developing/growing kids. That's one thing I like about sports in a local setting, at high school or within the same towns/communities: they're usually better at developing a person along with the athlete. On a slight chance of topic, I think kids playing one sport year-round is probably not a good idea until high school due to the reasons others have mentioned, like burnout and the heightened potential for injuries. Once they're into high school? Have at it. But I don't think you have to play a sport year-round as a 10-year-old to be a stud in high school. Just be an athlete.

Thanks Mr, Garcia for having my back. Yes people all I did was list the current rankings and then look at EVERY Regional/EVERY weight to locate the wrestlers placement.... no biggie because I had multiple hours to spare to educate the wrestling community. As evidenced by the results so far another incredible job by all involved with the rankings.

    FEB. 3RD!!

This match had it all! I follow Penn State's wrestling board; even those drunk on the Nittany Whiskey didn't give PSU much of a chance without Nolf in the line up. I thought Kuhn did an awesome job. When he gets in match shape, look out. I don't understand the decision to put Lee down in the second. He had a fairly difficult time getting out in the first period. Next time around, if McKenna has to battle Nick from his feet, i think there will be a different outcome. The Zain train keeps rolling. Best get out of the way. I thought that Hall and Jordan would be the match of the night. They did not disappoint. I loved Hall's emotion and post-match interview. Well...I was wrong. Nickal and Martin was match of the night. How about Bo producing buzzer-beating back points in what proved to be the determination of the meet winner? Wrong one more time. Cassar comes in and hangs the "L" on undefeated Kollin Moore. If you are a Buckeye fan, you are livid over Moore's non-performance. Nevills may have produced one of the "best" losses in PSU history, holding all-everything Kyle Snyder to a decision. Snyder was exhausted. Give Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State's message boards a peek. There are lots of Cael Sanderson critics out there. Did you know that Cael is a terrible match coach, and cannot develop wrestlers? He has only won 6 of the last 7 national titles. Imagine what PSU could do if Sanderson knew how to coach! I am thankful I do not hear that insanity on a high school level...

  37. I know this young man more than anyone. It’s obvious he has some young fans who believe in him and maybe are getting excited. As far as Good luck to him ?... he don’t need that at all. He has earned everything he has accomplished in his life by just believing in himself and working hard ! And nothing ever just given to him , so tough road....? Good that’s where he needs to be? And right where I want him because each match is all the more rewarding win or lose because he knows exactly where he is at and what needs to be done to improve. To all the wrestlers out there you are an amazing bunch that inspired me into starting my sons wrestling journey and I thank you all for that and have my respect ! I’m looking forward to watching them all in the coming weeks for sure! Stay focused Wrestlers.

    FEB. 3RD!!

I thought although he lost, Penn State 125 set the tone with early takedown and lead on Tomasello. That got the crowd electrified and that carried throughout the dual. Disappointing match for Lee, but Mackenna is a solid experienced guy and he just stayed solid, not allowing Nick to get in any wild scrambles or big moves Nickal getting that extra point with a major decision in the last few seconds set up the chance, and Cassar just wrestled out if his mind with the win over #1 Moore If anyone still doubted Cael’s coaching ability saying anyone could win with his lineup - I think tonight’s win with Nolf out and nearly the whole lineup stepping up it highlighted that he has everyone on the squad believing they can win any match

  47. No one a lock in this sport . You see it every year, kids getting upset . We’ll take Austin DeSanto from Pennsylvania, pulls off a upset over heavy heavy favorite, #1 Ranked, #1 in the World Champion Spencer Lee. You can even come to this great State and we watched #1 Ranked kid get upset by #4 right before The #1 was about to Tech Fall him he pulls a Head Lock out of No Where to pin the #1. Stunna ! Pretty Sure the #1 was a Lock by most that year. It happens almost every year. Might happen this year, all it takes is Courage to pull the trigger, Courage to get better. So ......
