  1. So time to take a quick break and provide a distraction to the loaded regional and SS talk. My son is new to the sport...it was a little over a year ago that he decided he wanted to give wrestling a try. Something about watching kids under the lights at Bankers Life in 2015 provided that spark. So as a 5th grader he started on his journey. After a bit of research, we learned about Red Cobra and he’s been in that sweat box ever since...and most nights I’m also spending a few hours listening to Coach Red bark instructions to all the kids. Now true confession time...I never wreslted myself and frankly thought wrestlers were an odd bunch growing up. One dude I knew in Junior High covered his singlet in deer attractant as an “advantage”. Another kid claimed to rub onions on his pits and “area”. I was a basketball player and that was my love...I wasn’t tough enough to wrestle even though I considered myself a tough guy. So needless to say, I knew next to nothing when my kid started and know just a tiny bit more now. More recent confession, during our first few meets man some parents were going insane during a match while I just saw some kids leaning on each other. My inner monologue said “dude, what’s those people’s issue? They’re some real nut-jobs.” Fast forward to today, and a solid year of Coach Red training has not only helped my kid but also his old man that’s been sweating profusely on the other side of the partition while Coach Red instructs like only he can. What I didnt know is that I was getting C-Red Trained too. Now I find myself automatically and instinctively barking stuff like “Get Your HEAD UP!!!” And “UP AND OUT!!!” Or “GET THAT TIGHT AND SQUUUEEEEZE!!!” Or “God gave you two hands SO USE THEM!!” Its like I can’t control it. So to all you parents before that I was secretly being real judgey towards in my head, because y’all were losing your minds (or so I thought)...my bad. To all you beginner parents wondering why the big dude in purple is losing his mind in the future....you’ll get it one day. One thing I’ve learned while my boy has really embraced and taken to this sport and the process...if you’re the parent of one of these high schoolers that’s putting it all out there in the coming weeks, then really be proud of it and where you are. Make sure to take a moment and take it in. Be proud they’re there regardless of outcome. Unlike any other, wrestling is an awesome sport that requires some real courage to even walk out there on that mat. Sometimes it takes the eyes of a newbie to bring the obvious into focus. Good luck to all competitors and teams as each step gets a little tougher. I’m glad I’m here...and I’m glad my son has chosen to be a wrestler. <Pound Sign>HendricksCountySmellsFunny #PainTrain #PoundSign

  2. Here’s my opinion: If we want wrestlebacks from the IHSAA, do NOT argue a kid gets caught or has a bad match. They say we aren’t valuing the effort and performance of the kid had who pulled the upset. Focus on the ridiculous draws that puts two placers against each other. At Mishawaka Joey Smith beats Trace Hall of SB Riley in triple OT I believe to win the Regional. We had lost to him like 3 times that year. Our reward is we draw into Galka of Hobart who had been injured precious week. Hall places at state and we lose in ticket round 3-2. Even better one: Trent Reinoehl beats Young of CMA in OT to win regional. Churchard of Valpo and Roach of Crown Point are In same regional. Our reward? We draw roach in ticket round and lose 3-2. Chrurchard gets first, roach 2nd and young 3rd at state while we sit in the stands. If we are ever going to get wrestlebacks, it’s my opinion that these situations must be focus. Don’t even bring up someone getting caught. IHSAA will use that against us. Snyder

  5. Sorry for the late reply! Got stuck watching awful 8th grade boys playing 3vs3 "Roundball" in class. I love how all 8th grade boys think they are the next Curry, Harden, Ball, etc. When none of them are over 5"8 or 150lbs dripping wet. Why cant I get the next Snyder, Burroughs, NaTo, IMAR, etc. Thats right, Got to love Indiana Basketball. When what I should be allowed to teach is the basic fundamental of the greatest sport on earth. Oh wait, I cant because of liability issues. I will stop my rant now and get to my breakdown of the Penn Regional. I am calling it the TRIPLE CROWN OF HORSE RACING THIS WEEK. Sectionals was the tune up race Mishawaka (Lexington Stakes) and Plymouth (Tampa Bay Derby) for the Final Three Races of the year. Regionals (Kentucky Derby), Semi-State (Preakness), and State (Bellmont Stakes). This should be a real tight Race with Three Jockeys looking for the Win, Penn (14), Wawasee (14), and Mishawaka (12) all competing for the "Grand Daddy" at the end of the day a Regional Title! All race results will be in no particular order. Lets Start with the 1st Race of the day: Post Time 9:30am 106- Two great young horses looking to mix it up. Should be a great race with the winner setting themselves up nicely for the "Preakness" next weekend. Jace Alexander- Wawasee 35-2 Andrew Sinkovics- Mishawaka 28-5 Hunter Boynton- Penn 14-7 Dominic Smith- Plymouth 26-9 Dark Horse Gate 15 Maxx Szucs Clay 24-11 Post-Time 9:45am 113- This will be a very interesting race but I think all four horse will come from the Lexington Stakes Brendon Mark Mishawaka- 26-3 Evan Light Penn 24-9 Trevor Penrod Riley 25-5 David Hudson Washington 14-4 Dark Horse Gate 1- D'Angelo Shumpert Triton 29-4 Got to Get out of Gates Early Hudson Washington vs Shumpert Triton Penrod- Riley vs Romo Wawasee Post Time 9:55am 120- Calling this race will be tight with only three real horses looking to reach the finish line first. Cant call it a photo finish but which horse will stand tall at the end. Setting themselves up for the Preakness next weekend! Chris Schuller Wawasee- 28-2 Vince Sparrow Penn- 22-12 Alex Coleman- CMA 29-8 Todd Hardy- Washington 26-12 Post Time 10:10am' 126- Get those binoculars out and watch the finish of this race. Of the top three horses in this race anyone could win on any given day. Glad I paid top dollar to sit at the finish line for the weekend. Some Horse is setting themselves up at next weekends Preakness. The other three will have to find a way to workout of a tough gate next weekend. Remember these are in NO PARTICULAR ORDER! Granddaddy RACE OF THE DAY! Joey Zahl Adams 23-8 Zane DeVault Plymouth 35-4 Tanner DeMien Penn 25-7 Braxton Alexander Wawasee 34-2 Dark Horse Lane 12 Dawson Leed LaVille 23-3 Out of the Gate Zahl Adans vs Leed LaVille Post Time 10:20am 132- This is a two horse race from what I have seen this year. Two "Studs" have set themselves apart. Need to battle tough anything can happen! Germia Brooks- Wawasee 31-2 Manzona Bryant- CMA 29-0 Gabe Weeks- Mishawaka 26-5 Logan Hill- 26-9 Dark Horse Gate 1 Nate Riggin Triton 30-5 Out of Gate Riggin Triton vs Hill Penn Post Time 10:30 138- The 5th race of the day here at the Derby is another interesting race. If I was a betting man (which Im not) I would bet a trifecta on this race, with the top three horses setting themselves apart from the field. But a young horse may surprise some people in this race. Dont think he has enough to place top 3. Adam Davis CMA 33-0 Preston Risner Penn 26-8 Garrett Stuckman Wawasee 30-6 Drew Mason Mishawaka 18-13 Dark Horse Gate 2 Nick Felke LaVille 24-2 Out of the Gate Mason Mishawaka vs Felke LaVille Post Time 10:40am 145- This is really a one horse field. This horse has stood out all year long. I would take the bet on this horse winning the race and play the odds. The other three horses will be looking for places 2-4. Jacob LaPlace- Mishawaka 33-3 Gavin Banks Plymouth 31-8 Isaiah Faroute- Wawasee 18-12 Jeffery Harper Penn 24-9 Dark Horse Gate 4 Elijah Peck CMA 30-6 OUT OF THE GATE Harper Penn vs Peck CMA Post Time 10:50am 152- I am a betting man here and will take the parlay here. These three horses will be in a race till the end. It might not be a photo finish but it will be tight till the end. Graham Calhoun- Plymouth 39-0 Aaron Brooke- CMA 27-1 Joe Walker- Mishawaka 24-9 Jeremy Williams- Washington 27-7 Post Time 11:00 am 160- This is a very intriguing race from top to bottom. All of these horses have big wins but also have losses to one another. This race will come down to stamina and technique. Who will be in the top four is the question. I will say that all four horses will come out of the Lexington Race! Donya Harris- Washington 27-10 Ben Kensinger- Mishawaka 2-9 David Sheley- Riley 37-10 Colin Wilson Penn 16-9 Out of the Gate Gabe Hissong CMA VS Donya Harris Washington Dylan Deadmon Bremen vs Colin Wilson Penn Post Time 11:10am 170- The 10th race of the day is wide open. I think I'll grab my mint julep and sit back and watch, which one of these 4 horses want to break away from the field and end upon top. Pretty sure three of the spots will come from the Tampa Bay Derby. Noah Brown Penn 25-6 Jacob Trefren CMA 29-2 James Snyder Triton 30-4 Xavier Ortiz- Wawasee 22-7 Out of the Gates Tecory Gordon Clay vs Xavier Ortiz Wawasee Post Time 11:20am 182- Whichever horse comes out on top here will set themselves up with a great starting gate next week at the Preakness. Those that finish 2-4 will have a lot of work to do to make it to Bellmont. This race could also have great implications on the team race as well. Max Chaffee- Penn 19-1 Michael Boland- CMA 19-0 Blake Davis- Plymouth 17-7 Alex Castro- Wawasee 32-4 Dark Horses Cody Timmerman Mishawaka 19-14 Out of the Gates Blake Davis Plymouth vs Cody Timmerman Mishawaka Post Time 11:30 am 195- A deep weight class here and a stumble out of the gate could lead you down a path of no return head to head with a real Triple Crown Winner (Davidson). Want to start strong and finish strong! Lexington Stake Race prepared these four horses to move on. Rockne Hurley Penn 22-4 Jonathon Thomas Adams 33-6 Garrett Sandefer Mishawaka 14-4 Aaron Williamnowski- St Joe 30-8 Post Time 11:30 220- A good horse got a bad draw and is going home early. This will have implications on the team race, a good post for next weekend. NAte LaFree Plymouth 34-3 Casey Conery- St Joe 7-5 Adam Berta Penn 27-5 Anthony Hatter LaVille 23-2 Dark Horse Joe Kuhl CMA 24-7 OUT OF THE GATE Berta Penn vs Kuhl CMA Perish Wawasee vs Conery ST. JOE Post Time 11:40 am 285- Down to the last race of the day, final post of the afternoon. Its been a long day and I hope everyone sticks around for a great race of upperclassman horses. Two horses have never lost a race this year who is going to leave with the title. The top 4 horses only have 9 losses combined on the year. Isaiah McWilliams Washington 38-0 Elisha Tipping Wawasee 29-2 Alex Faulkner Mishawaka 29-7 Alex Cartwright Laville 25-0 Dark Horse Yehezquel DeVault Penn 24-15 OUT OF THE GATES DeVault Penn vs Tipping Wawasee First of all I do not condone gambling in anyway shape or form. Thought it would be fun to reference the great wrestling we have up north. Hope everyone enjoys. And if you do not like my predictions on things so be it. I am not perfect or a rankings guy. Great post Kookie (I assume you got permission from MattyB to post even tho you didn't put your name on it!..I kid of course MattyB) To piggyback off some of the thoughts above, all of which are fantastic and got me to add my own, I never participated in the sport and knew nothing of it like Kookie, but got hooked exactly 5 years ago next week when Jr decided he wanted to go to Middle School state. Was hooked instantly. Fast forward to now and this is my 1st year of not having a "skin in the game" so to speak for the state series run. I miss it immensely, more than anything else in this year of 1st's as an empty nester. The anticipation, the nervousness, the drawing up of imaginary bracket scenario's for the ticket round, watching Jr get in the zone as the week progresses to Sat, worrying about every little red mark that pops up on the skin or every sniffle as that was my worst fear was that skin fungus or sickness would rear it's ugly head at this time of year, the intensity buildup as the stakes are raised in each subsequent level of advancement, the exhilaration of seeing the hand raised and even the agony of defeat as that is when character comes out. We can argue about class/wrestlebacks etc but this time of year was the best, for a large part because it's setup as it is. Whether your child gets to the bank, or gets 4th and moves on to the next round of regional/SS, the bonds and memories are priceless..because you know what these kids have done to compete in the sport of wrestling. Good luck and good health to everybody. May the best kid win, but if they don't hey there's always wrestlebacks!, but if they don't, they are still your kid and your champion. Enjoy the ride..savor the moment.

Just want to chime in on this sport can take a hold of you and make you a fan for life. I wrestled in high school , joined the army after graduation and got married. I would go watch the local schools wrestle as well as local touneys that I found in the newspaper. I came home in the mid nineties and jumped right back to supporting my old school. I have three daughters none of whom wrestled, but would come watch with me and then became stat keepers in middle school and high school, the youngest did it in college. I'm now an empty nester, but my wife and I can still be found in the stands every saturday and even some sundays when we can. State is our weekend getaway, and some people call us crazy sometimes, but they just don't understand that once you are a wrestler the love for this sport stays with you for life.

I even wonder sometimes if drawing them into "stars knocking off stars too early" isn't beating a dead horse. They have that in all of their other sports tournaments--which is what they insist on comparing us to. I think instead there's an argument to be built that we're NOT being treated like other sports. All other sports have their tournaments conducted in the way states around the country conduct them and in the way their sport's culture dictates--except ours. We're the only ones forced to fit into a box that is completely disassociated from the rest of the season structure and the sport nationally. AND I think we can give examples of other individual sports that have similarities to ours that they don't realize; namely, track, swimming, and gymnastics. In those sports, at each tournament round, we have the best people all together in one space and we find the genuine best and advance them. That's how wrestling works. We never do a tennis-style single elimination tournament, from the youth ranks up through college. Instead, we get everyone in one space and spend a day figuring out the pecking order. It would be silly to get a bunch of swimmers together, randomly draw them into 4 heats, and say each heat winner gets to advance. We're all together at the same pool--let's go ahead and have some prelims and finals and pick the genuine best 4. Wrestling is the same, but they need to be invited to see it outside the "upsets happen" narrative or even the "my star lost too early in the tournament" argument....in my very humble opinion.

  12. In my opinion, Jesse Mendez will be a lock 3 out of 4 years if not all 4, but obviously Freshman year can have its obstacles (what weight he goes, experience, etc.). Don't get me wrong he has the experience on the national scene and has beaten many high school kids. He is very humble, has a gas tank that doesn't seem to go to E, and I am sure has every intention of setting a goal of being a 4 timer. Put all that together with the coaches and partners he is going to have at CP and that gives you the ingredients to make a recipe for a large pot of whoop ass chili. I am looking forward to seeing him the next 4 years. #Regionstrong

  14. This subject will be debated for years and years to come. I coach in our club, as well as pop warner and one of my sons travel baseball teams (yes I'm crazy). All three of my boys (9th, 7th and 5th grade) have been playing football and baseball since they were 5 and started wresting 3 years ago. It's tough from a competitive standpoint to push them to the highest level when other kids are getting more swings in or more mat time or going to various year round football camps. As a parent, at some point, you have to start making tough decisions regarding year round sport activity, not just from a progression standpoint but let's not forget a financial one as well. I've seen many travel baseball players slowly walk away from the sport around the age of 13/14 and its been discussed in great length in the baseball community that part of this reason is because they simply start to lose their passion for the sport. Some of these youth baseball teams are playing 70-90 games during the season, which is insane. However, wrestling seems to be a sport where only the passionate survive. You can't really force a kid into wrestling as it typically doesn't end well. Because of this, I honestly don't see wrestlers losing their passion as quickly as a baseball player might, not to mention that baseball is probably the biggest self esteem destroying sport out there from a statistic stand point. College recruiters have also said they prefer multi sport athletes, but that can be misleading, because they aren't recruiting mediocrity either. The real problem here are parents: Parents have this crazy notion that their son/daughter should always be at the same level as Johnnie down the street. Truth is, Johnnie matured earlier, has better muscle tone and at the age of 13 is done growing. Kids develop at different rates, regardless if they practice year round or not. Year round wrestling isn't pushing people from the sport, parents are.

  17. I think this basically summarizes it. The one other factor as 'year round' sports have become more and more popular is ACCESS to "off season" coaching. If you live within 30 minutes of some of the better wrestling academies it is significantly easier to make that year-round commitment. I know there are some who set such a high priority on their sport (whatever it is) that they invest vasts amounts of both time and money in travel costs. That is not realistic for everyone. Not saying this is "unfair", "wrong" etc.... But I do believe it is a fact that causes some differences in performance at the top level of competition. I know my son considers himself a 'wrestler' and he competes in the preseason, does RTC's in the post-season, competes in the post-season etc.... That said, once he starts his summer job (which he has to have) his schedule does not really allow us to make the travel times and commit the funding to attending a wrestling academy (probably 1-2 hour drive to the nearest ones). If he doesn't make it out of SS this year I definitely think that will be a contributing factor. BUT NOT AN UNFAIR ONE! IF A KID WHO DID MAKE THE COMMITMENT WINS- THAT KID DESERVES IT.

  18. This goes along with every single athlete in any sport. Great baseball players play year round... as well as basketball. It isn't hurting the sport it is making the guy who are season only athletes fall behind. I say practice round round at what you love. Go do other sports but keep practicing the one you love most

Glad your son chose the right sport. You were correct about wrestlers being an odd bunch. Their is always an exception to the rule, but for the most part they are odd and usually the better they are, the weirder they are. As for us parents, we are all mad here, some just hide it better than others. Welcome to the weird, wild and wonderful world of wrestling.

  22. I thought the same thing...not as phenomenal as Parris, but a young kid under the radar at a small school. As a freshman at a big-guy weight, was arguably the 3rd or 4th best guy last year based on the high placers he beat--just lost his first match of the year at exactly the wrong time in the semi-state quarters. He will absolutely be a force the next two years and could be on that "lock" quality trajectory with how hard people are saying he works.

The other thing is we get compared to other sports all the time. The bottom line is that wrestling is a 2 and done sport. That is how all good tournaments are ran at all levels. But during the athletes most important tournament it is one and done at the most crucial time. We are one of 5 states that isn't classed and the only state that doesn't have wrestlebacks. We are nationally ranked in the top 20 consistently for High School wrestling. How is that not a data point that matters? I get it that they already think we have it better than other sports because we seed. Heck our returning state champs girls basketball team just got knocked off first round by a local rival that is great this year and that should have been a sectional finals game. But how is comparing other flawed systems to us a logical step or argument? I just really don't understand. This is after watching it and being a part of it for the last 25 years. Every year it works me up.

It's crazy the kind of things we do as parents once our kids get involved in something. I dabbled with wrestling in high school, but coming from a small school in Ohio, there wasn't much push back then. So when my kids started wrestling a few years ago, I wasn't exactly sure what we were committing to. Now that they have shown great interest and are starting to have some success, I've become that crazy wrestling dad too. Fast forward to now and I'm like a sponge, listening to everything our club coaches say, learning as much as possible, getting bronze and copper certified, etc. Heck, even somehow got volunteered to serve on our club board. This sport is amazing and I'm so glad my 3 boys have decided to be involved. Thanks for posting this thread............much needed reminder that we all come from different places, but in the end our love and passion for this sport is what drives us!

  30. I’m normally just watching but time at home with a sick kid gave me the chance to put something together here. Yes, Harrison should dominate again in winning this Regional for the 6th straight year. But, if they don’t show up, it could be closer than expected with an improving McCutcheon hungry for greater success. The Lafayette Sectional is clearly the stronger Sectional in this “weak” regional. I predict 8 rematches from the Lafayette Sectional this weekend. There may not be a lot of entertainment until the finals in Logansport Saturday as the best wrestlers are clearly the best. The most likely chance for early round excitement comes at 145 as the bottom half of the bracket is evenly matched (Merkel(Har) vs. Ball(NW), Phillips(Mc) vs. Saavedra(Rens) and the winners). Other first round matches to watch: 126 Atkinson(BC) vs. Wade(Har) 152 Ruiz(Har) vs. Johns(NW) 182 Pugh(TL vs. Younker(Har) Predictions: 106 Reagan(Front) over Hein(Har) – Reagan just too much for Hein but they both waltz to the final. 113 Armstrong(Win) over Patrick(LJ) – Patrick may be more battle tested and still could take him. 120 McCartney(Har) over Hickman(Rens) – McCartney’s experience wins out in a close, calculated match. 126 Burge(Mc) over Watson(Del) – Burge looking really good in a rematch of last week’s final. 132 Betourne(Har) over Worley(LJ) – Betourne is the absolute lock for the weekend again. 138 Linder(Mc) over Fauber(WL) – Fauber not himself in the finals last week but is really no match for a focused Linder. 145 Douglass(Att) over Merkel(Har) – Will Merkel have anything for Douglass after a very subpar performance in the final last week? 152 Ruble(Mc) over Kerr(Att) – The upper half of this bracket has the best three wrestlers (Ruble, Ruiz, Johns) after Dodt(TL) pulled the upset in winning last week. 160 Conklin(Har) over Adkins(LJ) – Conklin has found a way to own Adkins having beaten him all three meetings this year. 170 Lopez(Mc) over Fair(LJ) – Fair has a tough semi-final match with Franklin(Log) but Lopez prevails either way. 182 Lambeth(Fa) over Pugh(TL) – Faith gets their first ever champ and semi-state qualifier here. Lambeth bounces back after being upset in the semis last week and takes down Pugh who he pinned earlier this year. 195 Ford(BC) over Stallings(WL) – Ford is definitely the crème of the crop here and just too much for Stallings. 220 Scheering(NN) over Kidwell(WL) – A complete toss-up so I’ll give the experience nod to Scheering. 285 Crider(Har) over Trent(WL) – Crider just too much for Trent. Williams(LJ) in the semis is the tougher match again for Crider.

  31. I switched to the dark side this year! Reffing has brought a whole nother meaning to the sport for me. (This is the reason I have not ran my mouth this year). I see us getting a 6#er through, McCartney, Hickman has a shot. Gonna be wild to see how we draw out on the 120 weight class. The loser of this weight could get the better draw. Betourne looks solid this year. Ford from bc punches a ticket FO SHO! CRIDER DOES HIS THING.

  33. Not necessarily my views, but I was reading a post on the another sight. The title was "Is year round wrestling killing the sport? To summarize, it just pointed out that due to kids wrestling 12 months, we are developing great dominant wrestlers, and that looks great on the surface, but overall participation is dropping as a result. The sentiment was, the only way for kids to compete at the top level you have to wrestle all year round, only specialize in wrestling. The kids that play multiple sports or don't have the resources to play year round, cant compete against the year round big dogs because they're not putting the time in or getting the training. As a result, they're playing other sports because they're not going to be as successful. Also adding to this is the pressure from other sports requiring specialization, thus scavenging good athletes away from wrestling. The conclusion is this is the biggest reason why we have so many forfeits (not just an Indiana problem). They even hit on the ever expanding national tournament circuit, that a lot of kids are being put in these too early and its freaking some of them out or burning them out when they're young, thus driving them away from wrestling. Traveling sports is a billion dollar industry and is a phenomenon that every sports going to have to find away to adapt. I got to agree that our best kids Indiana are better than ever. But the middle and bottom levels are thinner than Ive seen. You also can see this represented by the top ranked schools have 4or 5 kids that can win a state championship. The big programs are doing things right and have something going on, but they're like the Tom Brady's of wrestling. They're monopolizing the state championships. I just wonder about peoples opinions related to sports specialization in wrestling?

  34. Very capable young man. In fact.....as capable of getting it done as anyone in the field. And yes.....that includes my son Silas. Apart from wrestling, Noah is a great young man who deserves all the good that life & the sport of wrestling brings his way. Ironically, Noah & Silas roomed together in Fargo and forged a friendship. My opinion....North Dakotah State got a serious steal in signing him. Noah flying under the recruiting radar until last summer really benefits that program in a big way. Excited to follow his development at the next level. I usually avoid the prediction conversations when they involve my son. But realize....I appreciate the luv, acknowledgement and confidence a great deal. Yes....I'm very bias and don't know many wrestling dads who aren't. So the only thing Ill share regarding Silas and State is this......He has plenty of great opponents to wrestle before even matching up with one of the other top ranked guys. And fact is.....while he's humble off the mat, they'll be no respect towards ANY opponent once they're in the circle. Because at this point in the season.....We don't care if you're ranked #1.....or if you're a first year guy whose forfeited your way to this stage. You'll be prepared for and taken very serious.

Throw out the UPSETS. It's not really what wrestle backs are about IN MY OPINION. It's those studs hitting each other at regionals. Then drawing a stud in ticket round. One of them go home. 4 kids in other bracket that more than likely can't beat any of the kids. The goal is to have the best wrestlers at state!!!

  36. I voted No, Indiana has a one of a kind format . Why make excuses to change what others envy, they know it’s tough that’s why others States don’t do it . Indiana Wrestling is a Leader “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower” “Steve Jobs”

  37. My daughter plays travel softball. Im in denial and am not going to list how much it costs me. Wrestling in some ways isn't as bad cost wise but, if you hit the circuit hard it can add up.

  38. I only have one knock on year round wrestling. Leadership skills are lost through the process (FOR THE MOST PART). It is the fact that year-round wrestling integrates a singular mindset into that wrestler, meaning they only care about their performance and not too much about their teammates' performance. Dedicating all of the hard work in the off season to their own skills sort of creates a mindset of "ONLY ME & MY WRESTLING MATTERS!" I feel that this then limits the leadership skills of these wrestlers who should be able to lead their teams during the season. I've seen this first hand at many of the programs I've been involved with. It isn't a huge or terrible deal that these guys aren't necessarily the best leaders of their teams, I just kind of get let down when the best wrestlers in the room only care about themselves and not the overall betterment of the squad.

  41. I think most of the kids that aren't year-round wrestlers really don't care. If they cared that much about wrestling, they'd forsake other pursuits. I was a "winter only" wrestler and I didn't care that I never made it to state. February - August belonged to baseball and wrestling was just a "stay in shape" sport for the long, cold winter months. It was fun, but it wasn't my passion.

  43. some bias on my end but with Silas you have to pack a lunch, bring a friend and cancel your afternoon plans to keep up with him. Have yet to meet another kid as smart, mature, humble, thoughtful and also a tremendous wrestler like Silas. I will put my money where my mouth is and pencil him as 2x automatic champ, won't say this year just cause. (don't hate on me, just showin love and giving my opinion)
