As many of you know, my hometown of Pendleton was hit by a tornado this week. In spite of the tremendous damage there were no fatalities and only one injury which was, thankfully, not life threatening. While I love my hometown, the community I am referring to in the title is the Indiana Wrestling community. I have received numerous calls from wrestling coaches checking on my family's welfare and offering assistance. Coach Duncan and some of his Frankton Eagle wrestlers came down to help in the cleanup this week. I am profoundly grateful to have as rivals such friends who took the time to reach out. Our town will recover and be better than before, albeit without as many trees. The wrestling community will always be a source of strength and pride for me, like it is for all of you. Thank you all for your caring and concern. Local charities are accepting donations but if you are of a mind to contribute may I humbly recommend the Red Cross in your community. They were on the scene almost immediately after the storm and set up a relief center at the high school. I encountered another Red Cross team today during my visit to a site where some of our wrestlers will be working tomorrow to assist a local wrestling family. The RC volunteers assured me they would be in town until they help everyone get back on their feet.

We haven’t seen the best Jesse Mendez yet. He gets better and better each match, that’s scary good. Yes, I believe he will be the best this state has ever had once it’s all said and done!!

After watching the 2019 IHSAA state finals again for the 5th time, I would have to say the best, most exciting, back-to-back matches by teammates has to be Rodgers @152 & Slivka @ 160. Elliott needed to win to secure at least a tie in the team race. He was losing late in the third period and it didn’t look like he was going to get it done. Rodgers wins in OT!!!! WOW! Then his teammate Jordan is wrestling a national ranked wrestler, Washington. Jordan, the underdog, gets taken down early and It looks like Washington is in control. If Jordan wins, he secures the title for Cathedral. Jordan had the same scenario last year, where he had to win the clinch the team title. He did it last year and did it again this year. Just an awesome back-to-back performance from both wrestlers. The best I have ever seen by teammates.

Wow he was impressive, very composed for a Freshman. Named OW of Cadet World Team Trials. His weight was stacked. He has so many different attacks and is non stop even against the best high school wrestlers in the country.

Walker still has a year of high school left. Cooper Noehre had a solid run at 74kg wrestling against a bunch of college guys.

    Best Wrestling Families

I wonder how many of todays Indiana HS top talent kids haven't wrestled with or been influenced by Bryan. I would be willing to say 0. Bailey's have certainly left their mark on Indiana wrestling.

If I recall CoCo made it in due to Madison needing to fill a hole in their lineup for an event. Heck I should be on the list, since I added more wins to the Black family total than CoCo was able to muster. Thanks Derek. 😒

    Best Wrestling Families

Bryan Bailey @Brey and his boys have made their marks on the mat. With that said, Bryan is currently providing more opportunities for more kids than any single person that I know of here in Indiana. The Baileys are the best wrestling family going. Just sayin

"Bad teams" that can't fill all weight classes...does that make them a BAD team...they may have quality guys without a full roster.

Outlaws Black finished 8th in the tournament. Everyone wrestled really well. Ran into Team Kong and that was a challenge but the boys left it all on the mat.

NFHS looking to reduce weight classes

This will cause even more "smaller" school kids to move to bigger schools. I know for a fact that some families with kids that go to smaller schools move to larger schools where they can ensure that they can make a line up. At these larger schools they will wrestle a better schedule, get better partners, and get better exposure (true or not.. this is the mentality of many). With this said... some people stay put because they aren't sure if they can beat a top dog at a top program. By them knowing that they don't need to beat that top dog, they are more likely to move to that bigger school. Especially, knowing the fact that they could have a chance to finish second to that kid at each level of the state tournament and be separated from him all the way through state. The rich would get richer if this happens. You may or may not think this is accurate???? Just a thought.
