Wrestling at the Olympics

Recommended Posts

Womens Freestyle

Amit Elor looks like a superstar. She has dominated all opponents and appears to have what it takes to win gold against KGZ.

Greco

Mijain Lopez of Cuba is favored to win his 5th gold medal at 130 kg. More dominant than Karelin? He has to beat the guy (Yasmani Fernandez of Chile) who immigrated out of Cuba because he couldn't beat Mijain Lopez.

Fumita of Japan gets vengeance against 2023 World Champ Sharshenbekov of KGZ at 60 kg, will wrestle for gold later against China.

Off to an exciting start, but still bummed by the Micic injury. Might end up helping Spencer Lee, if there's a bright side to it.

I have to admit...these are some of the worst picks I've ever made. I honestly can't recall what I was thinking in not picking Elor and Lopez.

How about the USA women? Two finalists in the first 2 weights competed? Hildy going for that elusive gold? Can't wait.

To be fair, no one had seen Lopez since the last Olympics, and the man is 41 years old.  Who knew he was still as good as ever.

no one in my circle gave anyone a chance against lopez...

it was such a done deal when he announced he was going that kayaalp all of the sudden developed symptoms that caused him to take the banned substance trimetazidine and popped hot and was suspended...

trimetazidine is commonly used to treat angina and increases blood flow to the heart...

everyone in greco knew he was the overdog...

You Dont Say Angelina Jolie GIF

watching him this week, i did not see anything to make me think he could not have done the same thing in LA...

Unbelievable Sarah Hildebrandt looked the best I can ever remember seeing her. Her defense generally and rubber leg specifically were incredible. Vinesh would've been a tougher opponent most likely, but nothing I saw at this weight makes me doubt Hildy would've prevailed against the Indiana wrestler.

Congratulations and welcome to the Indiana record books...again!

Freestyle

57kg Spencer Lee looked amazing in his Olympic debut, and will wrestle Higuchi for gold. The Japanese grappler will represent Lee's biggest challenge by far, but Lee is showing his class so far. He even tried using his vicious armbar, which pleased Jordan Burroughs during his broadcast.

86kg Brooks dropped his match in the semis in the last seconds in incredibly disappointing fashion. I'm sure that one is going to eat at him for a while. Hope he goes after Bronze with the same fury he showed in the quarters and semi. He showed he is right there with the best in the world.

57kg Maroulis looked a little outmatched in her semis match against Sakurai of Japan and will go for Bronze tomorrow. She won 2 tough matches before losing and earned that shot at another medal.

All in all, a really strong showing by the US freestyle teams

Parris lost but there was a ton I disliked about this match. First period Parris on the clock despite repeatedly pushing the action and making the only credible takedown attempts. 1-0 MGL.

Mason continues to push the action, gets a step out point instead of 2 for a TD. MGL tosses him for 4. Stupid decision to challenge. Like Burroughs says, the best guy doesn't always win.

Lee loses an incredibly tight one to Japan, who is one of the most visibly dehydrated wrestlers I've ever seen. Great, close match and someone has to lose, but Lee is right there at the tip top of the weight class internationally.

Dake normally is the king of making in-match adjustments, but couldn't fend off that low single from Takatini.

With only Snyder and Retherford left, the US men's wrestling is looking to go without any gold for the first time in 50 years, made even more remarkable by the lack of most Russians at these games.

i decided to not wake up at 2AM today to watch free because frankly i am a wrestling snob and it is entirely too dull as compared to greco for me to really care unless i have a connection to the wrestler or it is the important matches...

i woke up to text from a friend who says parris obviously went to the RBY school of wrestling and that i would hate the match...

of course that meant i had to watch the replay and he was not wrong...

you can not view real wrestling through the lens of the stall fest of folk...

in international wrestling fakes and bad shots do not equate to action... controlling the center of the mat is what determines a passivity call...

the mongolian was warned first and immediately took the center from there on out... the shot clock was 100% the correct call...

as far as the step out vs the TD...

parris had his leg in the air and the mongolian stepped out and hopped twice... then parris pulled him back in and they went out of bounds again and the mongolian was hopping on the foot out of bounds a couple of times before parris swept the leg...

ref awarded 2 and it was white paddled by the judge and chair correctly...

continuation out of bounds only applies in  one continuous motion...

parris did not wrestle like he understood international wrestling... i blame his coaches for that...

that match was officiated 100% correctly...

it never ceases to amaze me the "high" level coaches in this country who do not understand international rules and fail their athletes...

Uggh, go reread what I wrote. Never said any of those calls were wrong. I said Mason provided the most action in the first period because the Mongolian did next to nothing besides head snap. So, now pay attention here, I was implying one did more work than the other and the rules should honor that but they don't; it's strictly a closest to the bullseye positioning issue. Never said the ref or judge made any incorrect call.

You have a lot of hot takes that come across as pretty arrogant.

Greco is so incredibly boring for most of the world. I think that alone makes a lot of your opinions fairly dubious. If you think Greco is remotely exciting and freestyle is boring, I don't know what else to say but you have some weird opinions and have a hard time expressing yourself without trying to belittle others.

I get it, only you and your friends are aware of a vast conspiracy from Serbia that literally no one else brings up as an excuse. Good luck with all that, bro

So clever! I bet you're a lot of fun to hang with. You know all, including things no one else knows, which is pretty impressive. It's amazing too that you confuse opinion and fact as quickly and often as you type.

What other conspiracy theories do you espouse? Which other countries systematically cheat in plain sight at the biggest events each year? Please enlighten everyone else, and be sure to provide zero proof as usual.

Not my ego. You're the one "in the know", as you like to remind everyone much of the time. I have zero doubt you are similarly brilliant in all subjects...just ask you and you'll tell us all. Or don't ask, and you'll still tell everyone what you know and they don't know.

Obnoxious fellow you are. image.png
