NCAA Division I Nationals Results & Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

The arena announcer does a helluva job, I'm impressed with his ability to keep up with all 8 mats, announcing results and some play by play as well as sharing tidbits on the wrestlers.  You can hear him if watching on the ESPN app when you select an individual mat that doesn't have specific announcers.

Not so breaking news....  Levi Haines is freaking good!!

He lost a scramble with Bryce Andonian and found himself down 6-0 early.  He worked his way back, eventually tying the match at 8 in the 3rd period before getting turn and the fall.  What a comeback against a tough, tough opponent.

Rooks goes up big early and just about pulls out the W against VanNess. Unfortunately SVN was able to mount yet another late comeback. He will have either Demas or Blockhus next and if he wins that he will likely have either Gomez or Murin in the blood round

Okay so im not reading the brackets right? I thought rooks is in the blood round already and will get demas or blokhus and then if he wins he’ll face Gomez or murin and loser of that goes for 7th/8th. Or can someone explain?

Jesse won his first match this morning by fall and came back to win (on criteria?) against Dylan Ragusin.  He'll face Lucas Byrd in the blood round this evening.  Win that one and he'll face either Micky Philippi from Pitt or Sam Latona.  He's in the thick of it, but the sledding from this point ain't easy!

Holy crap!  Mendez got a takedown with 4 seconds left in OT to take a 3-2 lead and then let him up to tie at 3.  But Byrd had chosen down and took 17 seconds to escape.  Mendez chose neutral so Byrd had no riding time and Jesse gets the win.

Personally, I don't like that rule and how it can be manipulated.  If riding time is the tie breaker, I don't think you should be able to choose neutral.  Nonetheless, kudos to Jesse and OSU for taking advantage of the rules in place.  And KUDOS to him for getting the late takedown when Byrd chose to retreat rather than wrestle.  We discussed that and the often negative results that happen too often.

Congrats, All-American Jesse Mendez!

What a freaking night of wrestling and we're only 2 weight classes into the Semis!

Spencer Lee and Daton Fix both lose in the semifinals and somehow  RBY survives.  He kept his cool in a big way to win in sudden victory 6-4!

Jesse pulls a rabbit out of a hat to earn AA Status.  Unfortunately, Rooks couldn't get it done and loses 6-2

Man what a tough road for Silas Allred, coming up a bit sort of AA status.

2nd Round vs. defending NCAA Champ Dean - Win
3rd Round vs. #1 seed Bonaccorsi - lost 5-3
Consolation Blood Round vs. returning National Finalist Jacob Warner - lost 1-0

Better days ahead!

Silas had such a tough draw this year. Im confident he could beat several AA's at 197 this year. Heck, Dean just won his blood round match.

Purdue lost in basketball!! They were the one seed and got beat by the 16 seed.
