Best to have never won it?

I know this is about not winning a championship. But after the finish totals it got me thinking about that. And this doesn’t apply but can anyone help spark my memory. There was a kid from Belmont around early 2000 that won as a freshman and finished 3rd 3x(finish total of 10) I’m drawing a blank.

Not sure about how well he did all the years, but Taylor March had some solid years, I know he was there 2 years, not sure about the other 2 years. I tried to find some info on him, but my resource investigation skills are lacking.

never mind, he won it his senior year.

I’m surprised no one hasn’t said Austin Bethel yet. Four-time state qualifier who beat both Brayton and Joe Lee and immediately was an All-American as a true freshman at Wabash.

Bethel wins the “best to never place” battle, but it pretty difficult to put a “never placed” wrestler ahead of guys who made the semis 3+ times.

Obviously a little bias, but Zack Fattore.

102-8 in his career.

14-1 as a Freshman, his only loss was to Tommy Cash. Didn't wrestle the rest of the season.

9-1 as a Sophomore, Injury default. End of season.

37-5 as a Junior. 2 Losses to Swank, 1 to Penola, Sprained ankle in quarter finals wrestled on 1 leg against Webster and lost 5-1, Injury default in 3/4 match. Ended 4th in the State.

Ohhhh Senior year, was 41-0 going into the semi finals of state- had 2 Techs in the previous rounds, then had a (Very) bad call that gave him his 1st loss in the semis against Rader. Crary injury defaulted the 3/4 match. Zack finished 3rd and 42-1.

@brickfor6 I'm truly just asking because I don't remember the match.

but what happened? The record page says he got pinned?

seriously not trying to start a fight just curious

He got pinned in a defensive fall by Rader while up 3-0. I think he was about to turn him and they just called it.

Definitely the best to never medal.

 Completely agree

Side note, fewer 4xqualifiers then 4xchamps

Craig Alstott

Floyd Central (1986)

Michael Miller

Madison (2005)

Austin Bethel

Mount Vernon (Posey) (2017)

Michael Miller had some horrible draws.

Alex Tsirtsis, Dillon Whitacre, Eric Aue, Cahmelan Porter. I believe in that order. Up in at least one of the matches, if not two. Broke his foot in the sectional finals as a senior wrestled through, but faded in the Porter match.

It gets brought up every year but we (Madison) have arguments for best to never place and best to never win. Michael Galbreath, early 1990's, (3x qualifier, 2x runner up). We'll clear that bad juju in due time.

I was Matt Jaggers teammate and he had the best hip switch I ever seen. Be on the lookout for his two younger boys.

This list should (mathematically at least) bring some light to the conversation. I loved going through the old records and reliving some of these moments/ careers.

Statistically speaking is Schoeff the “best” to never win it?  His finishes are 2, 2, 3, and 3.

Does any other non-champ have a finish total of less than 10? (2+2+3+3)

I know Corsaro was 2nd three times but his finish total adds up to 12 (6+2+2+2) because of his 6th place finish his freshman year.

Ty Mills BBurg- 2,3,2,3

I see it differently.  If we are talking best to never win it I have to mention Tony Vaughn. A second and a third for FW Snider. Went on to Win the Big Tens and place 3rd at D1 Nationals as a Sophomore. An unfortunate series of events and injuries derailed his bid for a title.

He lost it the conference Finals when he was very sick but no excuse he was beaten by Huntington Norths Nick/logan Randle at the NCC championships keeping BC from being a four-time conference champion! BC had beaten him pretty handily earlier in the season for losing to him at conference. What's even crazier is that was Randall's only loss going into State at 41-1 and he would lose a heartbreaker 4-3 to Mason Todd in the first round... That 112 bracket is one of the most loaded brackets I've ever seen in the state finals history... What's even more wild is semi state that year Campbell won, the top four were Campbell, Todd, McKinley and Harvey. That is three state champs and a two-time runner-up all in the same semi state LOL.. Campbell lost to the state champ back 2-0, but that bracket had so many legendary guys that I'm going to have to post it.

Kyle Ayersman is the softest 3x’er in IHSAA History. Soft Coach too.
