But it's not just an hour gain for them it's a 2-3 hour gain. In fact. Theres schools in Evansville Semi-state that are closer to Purdue than Evansville. The fact is majority of the state gets a "bad deal" going to Evansville over Purdue. This Changes when compared to Fort Wayne. Of the 3 Purdue is the the closest to being centrally located.

The Indiana Geographical population center is in a corn a mile North of Sheridan.    Purdue win's big in that category only a half hour away.  Think of it this way.   The average drive of fans, coach and contestants on average is 3 hours closer to Purdue.   Lets calculate: 13K people traveling  3 hours less  there and back or 6 hours in total will save 78,000 hours of travel.   Think how much fuel saving we'll have that we can throw back into local school districts budgets.

SO - sounds as if it is down to Purdue or the Ford Center?

Pros/Cons of each?? Obviously the first one everyone will cite is the geography. Being from Southern Indiana I was pumped to hear the Ford Center...but if it is up in Lafayette, more than likely won't make the trek up.

Who has more seating? Parking? Hotels?

Places of interest in the downtown area?? Evansville has a ton of restaurants, bars, and even a casino. I have to imagine that would be hard to top...but I know nothing of the Lafayette area - being a college town, I imagine there is some night-life as well. (Not that this should factor into any kid of decision)

The Scholar's analysis continues with the comparison of Mackey to the Ford Center with the hotel analysis:    Per Booking.com West Lafayette and Lafayette have 31 hotels with an average Booking.com score of 7.746 points.   For full disclosure purposes, I did not include the "Lincoln Lodge Motel" as that is in the village of Clarks Hill, and would have brought the average score down.      Evansville, as far as i can tell has 29 hotels with an average Booking.com score of 7.690.   Based on those numbers, the hotel scene is pretty even and quality of hotel is close but with a slight edge to the Greater Lafayette area.

Mackey has within walking distance the prestigious Purdue Student Union Club, the brand new Hampton Inn and the Purdue Hilton Garden Inn.      The Ford Center has within walking distance, the Hyatt Place, Doubletree, Holiday Express downtown, Bally's casino and the Downtown quality Inn.

Lets's just have it in that corn field north of Sheridan so no one gets butt hurt.

I don't think it would be "good business"  for the IHSAA to get into a pis#$ing match with the local PRO sports team that has been willing to schedule games around a weekend of events (not just wrestling, but basketball as well). Our kids are fortunate to be able to play at such venues like Lukas and Gainbridge. This all-star thing sucks...but I'm not sure how you could have avoided it. (I'm actually in favor of moving the State Series, but I know it's not that simple)

So it basically all comes down to being more "centrally located?" - If that is the parameters, then Evansville should probably never be in the conversation.

As far has hosting State, yes. State should be located to lower the over all amount of travel as possible. By having it in Evansville you'll be asking a good chuck of the state to increase traveling to state by anywhere from 1 to 3 hours more than they already travel. The fact is State should be in Indy but if it can't the goal should be to keep it as close to Indy as possible. As stated theres a hand full of teams that compete in the Evansville Semi-State that are close to Mackey than the Ford Center.

That brings up another thing I've always thought was interesting to think about...does the proximity to the State Finals favor the Indy-area teams ?? Being able to sleep in their own beds, lack of travel time??

You've heard the term "didn't get off the bus" etc....

I don't think I really buy into that ....to me it is just excuses - but it is something to chew on/think about.

My guess is it would be more of a mental mind set than anything. Your elite wrestlers are so used to traveling and sleeping in hotel rooms it probably doesn't matter where they compete.

These 2 things go together. Will Sheridan have chairs with cushions? If so I vote for it and that will help my butt.

I get it, EMD loses the homefield advantage.    But we can make offset that disadvantage by agreeing to have the EMD table workers work the clock and scoreboard.

Believe me I would rather drive 10 minutes to the Fort Wayne Coliseum, but if it means more comfort while watching the state series, I would rather go to the Ford Center than sit on wooden benches at Mackey.  I think Mackey would be a neat venue but I can not imagine  sitting on wooden benches for 3 sessions of wrestling!!

You got options in Mackey:

1.  Use the gas money saved to buy tickets in Purdue Club section and get stadium seats and near the action.

2. If they go general admission, then used that saved driving time to get their early and get club stadium sheets.

3.  Use saved gas money to buy Goriila cushion from Indianamat. I heard Joe's marketing dept is putting this together.

4.  Buy a Beaver cushion from Rookie78 with saved gas money.

5.  Buy a boiler cushion at gift store with saved gas money.

And set up chiropractor sessions for the next 2 months with gas money saved!!

No one wants to sit in a car for 4 - 5 hours to see their kid lose to the #1 kid in the State on Friday.  And then sit in a car for 4-5 hours again on Saturday.

I drive 3 hours to Evansville every February and my kid is only in 7th grade!
