Stevenson with late points to win Gold.  Dake gets Bronze.  Hildebrandt gets tough loss on a late throw, but still has shot at Bronze.   Match of tournament with Snyder vs Sadulev tonight.  USA with best showing ever at Olympics in wrestling (not other sports like track and field).

The last two nights have provided some excellent, very exciting wrestling. The coverage and commentary has been really good too. A great late-summer fix to get us looking forward to our own pre-season. So much more fun than watching Chopped or the Bachelor.

Don't try your hand as sports reporter.  That was the worst description of one of the most exciting Olympic matches ever. Lol. Snyder vs. Sadulev has a tall mountain to climb to become the Match of the tournament, a very tall mountain.

For anyone that may have slept through the match,  Steveson controlled the first period and was up 4-0.  He gave up an exposure and Gable got a reversal for 1 to keep it at 5-2.  Late in the 2nd period, Gino got a TD and 2 turns for six quick points to go up 8-5.  Steveson scored 2 takedowns in the final 10 seconds to win it, the last with less than a second left.  It was an unbelievable comeback!

Do you have examples? Some can be semi-easily explained....others not so much.

Passivity is a mystery. The only thing I know is, it is not based on a typical American thinking of "most" shots. It has been notoriously inconsistent during the games.

According to the UWW rules passivity occurs "anytime the refereeing body determines a wrestler is blocking, interlocking fingers, thwarting his opponent and/or generally avoiding wrestling". But it is also mandatory that one of the wrestlers be put on the shot clock at the 2 minute mark of a 0:0 match. So they generally issue the first warning at 1:30 so they can give the second warning 2:00 and put the wrestler on the clock.

It has been explained to me that in the mandatory situation they generally award the wrestler who controls the center of the mat better. With that in mind I keep track of who has their butt to the center of the mat and who has theirs to the outer edge for the first minute or so. The guy with his butt facing out almost always gets the first two warnings.

Control of the center is not the same as most active. So if the guy with his butt facing the edge is taking half shots, doing feints and snaps, etc. it generally has no bearing on the passivity determination.

Actually the US had 13 wrestling medals in the 1984 Olympics, but that was the year that the Soviet Union & several other countries boycotted those games.

I had to stay away from the discussion as I watched all the action delayed through the YoutubeTV DVR.

Steveson was extremely impressive & his gold medal match against the Georgia wrestler will undoubtedly go down as legendary in US wrestling history.

Taylor was also very impressive & if not for Steveson's gold medal match Taylor's would have been the highlight of the US games.

Mensah-Stock was equally impressive in her Olympic Championship. I can't believe there has been no mention at all of her here. Come on guys! And as impressive as she was on the mat, she was just as impressive in her gold medal interview. If you have not seen it, it is must see.

Hildebrandt had a great finish in taking down a Bronze medal, but she had an absolutely devastating loss in her semifinal. She dominated the first period building a 7-1 lead. She then came out in the second period looking to score more but got caught in a front headlock after missing an attempted slide-by and gave up a turn for 2. After that, leading 7-3 with 2:00 minutes left, she got way to timid IMO. She looked to shut it down & just try to hang on. No real attempts to score in the last 2 minutes, not even any counters as her opponent was having to come after her. She gave up the losing points (a throw) in the last 5 seconds.

Also, Gray has not been mentioned. She looked great but ran into an equally impressive wrestler in the German. Silver isn't what she wanted, but she had a great tournament.

All in all, a great performance by both the men & women.

Amazing match that was finished off with his traditional back flip showing off his athleticism for a big man. Loved it!!!

I’m not sure, but in past Olympics, they had wrestle backs. That being the case, I’m sure USofA would of had a few higher placements this year if wrestle backs were still in place.

They do have them.... called repechage.  You only get back in if the guy/girl that beat you gets to the finals.  A final wrestling summary:

Men's FS - All 5 medaled
57kg Thomas Gilman - Bronze (lost to eventual gold medal winner 5-4 on a takedown in the last 5 seconds)
65kg - US did not qualify
74kg - Kyle Dake - Bronze
86kg - David Taylor - GOLD
97kg - Kyle Snyder - Silver
125g - Gable Steveson - GOLD

Women's FS - 4 of 6 medaled
50kg - Sarah Hildebrandt - Bronze
53kg - Jacarra Winchester - lost Bronze medal match
57kg - Helen Maroulis - Bronze
62kg - Kayla Miracle - Did Not Medal/No Repechage
68kg - Tamyra Mensah-Stock - GOLD
76kg - Adeline Gray - Silver

Greco-Roman
No Medals

9 total Medals
3 GOLD

2 Silver
4 Bronze

Definitely the best showing by a USA team in a long time.  As was mentioned earlier, 1984 team's earned more medals, but many of the countries with the best wrestlers did not compete.

Understood, but ,at one time there was true wrestle backs. Can’t remember when they stopped.

I agree Mesa-Stock is an interesting person to say the least, I believe she started wrestling when she was 16 or so. Seems very genuine and up beat. I did not see her match but will look it up.

Her Gold Medal interview is must see as well. Hopefully the link below will work.

They had ten weight classes in 84 also.  There was no womens's wrestling to offset.  But 20 weight events vs 18 now.
