Here is my best attempt at a lineup for Bellmont

106-Brent Faurote (86-7) State Champ

113-John Sheets (189-9) State Champ

120-Jason Baker (137-23) State Champ

126-Tim Myers (155-7) Two-time State Champ

132-Paul Gunsett (141-11) State Champ

138-Matt Irwin (164-13) State Champ

145-Paul Baker (117-11) State Champ

152-TJ Hays (149-14) State Champ

160-Bryce Baumgartner (141-21) Four-time state qualifier

170-Randy Baker (164-12) Four-time placer, Four-time Al Smith Champ

182-Chris Mahlan (112-10) State Champ

195-Billy Baker (128-17) State Champ

220-Daniel Meyer (112-19) 3rd, 4th place

285-Bill Schultz State Champ

There would be some nasty wrestle-offs between Myers, Gunsett, Irwin and Paul Baker.

Left out: Phil Lengerich-State Champ 1969, Nick Koons 3x 4th place (142-19)

Put Nick Koons in a state tournament bracket and my money is on him getting 4th.

The talent that is left off there is amazing, and that’s because of the MD depth/history. Guys like Sam Wildeman, Nosko, Rogge, Kevin Head, the 6’6 kid who won state (name escapes me but Nick Mayer?) You can go on forever!

Hard to argue with list but I’d slide Kody Wagner in at 152/145 as a 4th place finisher.

Jacob Aven should be mentioned as at least HM.

I'd like to see a 2nd and at least 3rd team. Curious how deep you could go with Mater Dei.

Completely agree, I had Kody at 145, but he was actually 152. I've updated my list.

No Love for Chris Wilderman on any if MD's lists? Some of the older guys might be able to chime in in this part, how good was John Barns (sp)? I heard he was DARN GOOD had a skin infection not gotten in the way he was favored to win state. He graduated my 8th grade year. I heard stories of what he was capable of. I worked at the same place he did for a while but never talked about high school with him, he said Bruce Baumgartner (sp?) Mopped the mat with him at the olympic training center. If you knew John you knew he was a BIG BIG BIG man and not fat. So for someone to dismantle him they have to be an absolute animal (or maybe even an Olympic gold medal winner😁)! RIP John.

That would have been interesting to see if John was healthy what he could have accomplished. I remember being at the Holiday Classic and he was having trouble with his hip. Some lady was giving him all kinds of he11 while he was taking injury time “Make heem wrassel!” I wanted to go tell the lady that he really was hurt but I figured it wouldn’t do any good.
