Possibility of no fans at both semi state and state?

That’d be so dumb. ECC and New Castle I get because they’re high schools. But the Coliseum has already had fans for wrestling and the Evansville semi state is big enough for something. And New Castle has had wrestling and basketball with a good amount of fans. But at minimum there should be two parents per wrestler allowed, plenty of space for that.

I’ll again defer to the progressive stance of the IHSAA for football and continue along that thought process. They allowed 2 tickets per participant. Though they were outside venues, the venues were still smaller than both semi-state and state venues for wrestling minus Lucas Oil and perhaps a 6A stadium.

So, my math says 16 wrestlers X 14 weights plus two coaches each is still under 1000 attendees. Throw in referees, table help, trainers, perhaps even concessions, and you have around 1500 per tourney venue. Looks like the two biggest non-coliseums in Indiana are East Chicago and New Castle checking in at right around 8000 seats. I have that at 18.75% occupancy for the smallest semi-state venues.

For Bankers Life at 20,000 capacity, all wrestlers, 2 coaches, 2 participant tickets, and tournament help of, let’s just say, 2000 would be only 10% capacity.

So, yeah, I can see fans at all venues for the entire tournament. IHSAA gives zero fecks about the Rona impeding their tournaments. They understand the role these sports are playing on our kids’ sanity. It’s a damn blessing and an an honor to be part of setting the bar for the country. Read no farther than landing the entire March Madness in Indy starting 2 weeks after the IHSAA finals.

First off we have to be very thankful we are having a season. It doesn't look promising for the states that have moved their seasons and we are extremely lucky here. I wasn't sure we would get through a month of the football season. I wasn't sure we would get through a month of the wrestling season, but here we are.

We all want fans at our events to cheer on the kids. This year has been really weird without fans in the stands. Last night was our first home meet with fans and it felt different and nice to have to people yelling and screaming.

With everything else going on in this world our kids having wrestling is even more important. Be appreciative of the efforts of the administrations from the IHSAA to local schools for working with us during this time. Our kids are having a season and it is looks good that we will complete it. That is something many states may not be able to say.

Went to a college dual in West Virginia last weekend. There were 4 teams. Each wrestler was able to put 4 names on the list. The venue seated 14,000. When we got there we had to go to the ticket booth, tell them the wrestlers name, and get assigned seats. We had to sit in those seats as they spaced us out all over the venue. They also allowed  clear plastic bags with food and drink because there was no concessions. It worked very well.

Has anyone heard this directly from Robert Faulken's mouth?  He was pretty clear on his stance on the rumor mill at the officials/coaches meeting in Fort Wayne.

Obviously there is a lot that is out of the IHSAA's control in this situation... it really seems like the situation depends on the color coding of the area, and the venues themselves as opposed to the IHSAA.

A bigger issue may be School Corporations with Red County restrictions. We could have schools not allowed to go to various levels of the state series if the host is in red or if a school from a red county will be attending.

This could get tricky...

It’s not helping that our state government is doing an absolute crappy job of Distributing the vaccines. We have vaccines, but most of it is just sitting there while the government figures out who gets it next.

Love you, Joe, but I stopped reading after the sentence in bold. That is the beginning and end. We are very fortunate to be wrestling in a state series at all.

I believe as stated by Faulkens in one of his last e-mails attendance will very by site. Some sections may have 1-2 per wrestler while others have none, it's really going to depend on the school/ county. Regionals and Semistate will be able to be limited to just particapants. Regionals will only have 112 wrestlers so if the venue is big enough and in the right county I don't see why there won't be some for that. Also Sectionals may also depend on the size of the teams. For example there's a good chance some sectionals may not have a full team or only 1 or 2 while others may be 8-11. Where some sectionals may have 5 full squads with another 3-5 with 11-13.

Maybe if they classed vaccinations....I kid, of course. However, we could be doing the best, some would say the bestest, distribution of vaccine and I doubt a state series that begins in 3 weeks would be minimally impacted considering we are on, what, people in the 80's to get in line? Unless your insinuating that wrestlers and families should be ranked higher (see what I did there) in importance.

Anyway, not a politician, nor a desire to start a class the vaccine 10 page thread but not seeing how vaccine distribution issues play a part in an event that begins 3 weeks from now.

To stay on topic, I support wrestlers getting a chance to reach their goals, whether I'm there or not this year.

I think a video feed is going to have to be a compromise this year.   How logisitically possible is it to have a Track Wrestling video feed on every sectional and regional mat?   I suppose a lot, but not all teams will have a video feed of their teams.    Just going to have to find it.     IMO,  letting the parents in might be a good compromise.    Most gyms still could accomadate parents and social distance.

On a more critical issue,  Ive heard that some school districts are not letting athletes travel to and compete in counties that are in red status.    So are ADs going to compromise and let there wrestlers compete at sectionals, regionals and semi-state if the counties are in red that host the sectional or regional.    With that said,  would the IHSAA move a sectional or regioanal to a school in a county that has an orange or lower status?

Hey Galagore,   one of the problems is that we have so many wrestlers at the same location at the same time in  semi-state and State.  Ive heard rumors that a solution would be to create an impromptu 3 division class wrestling system for the state tournament to alleviate the density of people in one spot.   Do you think thats a good idea?  Covid might get us class wrestling.😁😉

Let me think that over for a few...

Just kidding, that would be a great idea!

The IHSAA has an executive committee meeting Thursday night.

And Mr. Faulkens will be our guest on High School Wrestling Weekly Monday night. Tune in to see what he has to say about the upcoming state tournament!

Unbelievable plug.
I’ll be listening.

Sadly, this is probably not a good time to bring up wrestle backs. 🤷‍♂️

It’s a bummer; this year would have been my tenth year (all consecutive) FWSS and state finals, and I certainly had no intentions of missing this years’.

But as Joe said, we should just be thankful there’s a season at all. At the end of the day, as much as I love being a loud, obnoxious fan for those last two weeks, the season isn’t for me or any other spectators. I’d much rather have the kids get a season without fans than no season at all.

Could be a tell tell sign, decision has already been made to not sell suites....even though they allow for Pacer games with a maximum limit of six guest.

I hope all is well.  I am emailing you to inform you that a decision has been made that we will not be offering suite rentals for this year’s IHSAA State Wrestling Finals Tournament due to COVID 19 health guidelines and safety restrictions.

Please feel free to call me with any questions.  I look forward to working with you for the 2022 tournament.

Have a great day!

Sincerely,

I'm thankful we had a dual tonight. I'm thankful we get to have some fans at our conference tournament Saturday. I'm thankful I got to fill out our sectional roster this Saturday and stress out about not being able to have four in a weight class because that means we get to have up to 14 wrestle in sectionals.

I made a social media post about how fans could come to our meet the week (the only week) Lake County wasn't in red, but we were turned back to red the day before that home dual, so I had to delete the post.

Point being: everything I thought our team would be doing this year hasn't really happened in the way I thought it would, but the one thing that has happened is wrestling competition, and that is what I truly love. Everything else is varying shades of like. I love wrestling. We haven't gotten a lot of the stuff we like, but we have been getting the stuff we love.

I’m hearing some rumbling about the possibility of there being no fans at all  semi state, and state matches? Has anyone heard this, or is there any truth to this? This would be a travesty if true. I hope this is just a bad rumor.

Dumb as hell if that happens! Should allow fans in.
