Mater Dei Holiday Classic

I hear they're looking into making this a one day tournament. With the loss of Illinois and Kentucky schools, this tournament will be watered down.

Per track, two Tennessee teams will be there. Christian Brothers and Father Ryan. They have some tough kids that are comparable to Kentucky's top tier.

Returning champs are in BOLD

Not sure if its an upset or not, but Boonville's Jordan Fulks loses in the 1st round to Father Ryan's Joey Terry 9-7, in a tough back and forth match.

I can't find any info on Terry other than he's a junior. He was not on the Father Ryan team at state last year.  Today appears to be Father Ryan's 1st matches of the season.

A few random results....
@126 New Albany's Paul King dec Mater Dei's Jacob Pierre 3-1 with a takedown in the final :20

Two Portage vs. Roncalli results in the Quarterfinals...
@106 E'Shawn Tolbert (Port) dec Braden Getz (Ronc) 7-1
@126 Bryce Lowery (Ronc) by fall :31 over Miles Conrad (Port)
In a battle of state ranked guys...
@138 #14 Kody Glithero (Ronc) dec Bradley Conrad (Port) 5-1

Also @138 Christian Bros Dayne Dalrymple wins by fall over Mt. Vernon's 6th ranked Chris Newman, looking very dominant in doing so.

This sets up a helluva semifinal bracket with:
Boarman vs. Glithero
Dalrymple vs. Gavinn Alstott

@152 Ev, Memorial's Aiden Farmer 16-2 wins with a 1-0 dec over Boonville's Pat Mayes 18-2

On to the semifinals!  Some interesting matches here....
106 - Ropski (Chr. Bros) vs. Tolbert (Port) & Heaston (In. Creek) vs. Seng (MD) - 4 Tough kids - Seng is probably the favorite, but not a clear fav.  Winning here could springboard one to higher levels come State Tournament time

120 - Everyone wants to see Gilbert vs. Ross in the Final.  Willis Bronson of Christian Bros wants to throw a wrinkle into the plan.  Bronson is 18-0 and finished 2nd in the DII Division at TN State last year (106)
126 - Bryce Lowery is in the catbird's seat but could be challenged by Matt Oberlander of Father Ryan.  Ev. Memorial's Keegan Williams vs. New Albany's Paul King should be an excellent semi-final.  Could see those two again at EVSS.
132 - As others predicted, it looks like a Final between Alec Freeman (MD) and Jack Coyle (Port).  Don't see the semifinals throwing any curveballs here. Those up north know a little more about Coyle than some of us "southerners", but he finished 6th in 2A Illinois State last year.
138 - Mentioned above.... Predict a battle of State Champs for the Title. Dalrymple was a DII 120 lb State Champ in Tenessee last year.  Glithero and Alstott will make it difficult on Boarman and Dalrymple to ge there!
145 - Bottom semifinal is interesting.  Don't know much about Father Ryan's Ben Stigameir.  Is Roncalli's Zach Wilson good enough to challenge?

152 - J Conway looks to be the favorite.  I'm not sure Aiden Farmer has enough to get the upset.  Scott Fitts vs. Andy Layden - could that be the best match of the bracket?

160 - 2 "Clear Favorites" in Aiden Bowers of Christian Brothers and MD's Brody Baumann.  Bowers was DII State Champ at 152 last year, but finished 4th at the MD Classic with close decision losses to J Conway and Jake Insko from Union Co. KY.   If Owen Bryant is ready to step up his game, now would be a great time to do so.  Father Ryan's Joey Terry beat Jordan Fulks in the first round and waltzed into the semi's with a fall.  Don't blink or we could have an all-TN Final!
182 - Gervacio Gonzalez of Christian Bros has looked strong and is 16-0.  Can Mt. Vernon's Dalton Schmidt toss a road block his way.  Gabe Sollars looks the part to win it all.
195 - How good is 20-0 Blake Ritzert of Mt. Vernon?  The state of TN looks to find out as 18-0 Connor Billingsly of Ch. Bros looks to see him in the Final
220 - The match here is in the bottom half with Ev. Memorial's Kelton Farmer and MD's Nick Boots squaring off.  We'll likely see this match again at least one more time.  Both have potential, but are they State Qualifier good?  I think both need to step it up a level.  Winning here will land them against a strong Theo Sewell of Chr. Bros.
285 - Ev. Memorial's Barry Duff handled the #2 seed from Chr. Bros.  Now can he hang with Cory Hill of Portage?  In the other half, MD's James Ralph is definitely improved, but can he compete with 2019 MD Classic Champ (195) Parker Peterson of Father Ryan?  Peterson is well built and doesn't look like your typical 285.  He's handled himself so far.  Today will show how ready he is to jump up to the big boys.

Some semifinal results...
@106 Evan Seng (MD) dec Jackson Heaton (In. Cr.) 3-0  & E'Shawn Tolbert (Port) looked the part with a tough 4-2 dec over Alex Ropski of Chr. Bros

@113 Things went pretty much to form

@120 Lane Gilbert did his part with a 7-1 win and Cole Ross made it look easy with a fall over undefeated Willis Bronson of Chr. Bros, getting a fall in 2:25. Should be an awesome final!

@126 Bryce Lowery held serve and will provide a stern test for New Albany's Paul King, who got a tough 5-0 win over Keegan Williams.   Is King ready to step up to the big time?

@132  Freeman vs. Coyle for the Title.  Should be another great one

@138 Kody Glithero gave Boarman all he wanted, but fell 3-0.  Boarman was in on several shots but Glithero fended them all off until a late take down to seal the win.  Gavinn Alstott gutted out a tough one with lots of blood time, 2-1 over TN State Champ Dayne Dalrymple.  Boarman beat Alstott earlier this year, but as 145 will show us next, that doesn't mean it will happen again.

@145 Floyd Central's Hunter May avenged an 11-4 loss to MD's Ashton Hayhurst, turning it around today with a 10-4 win.  He'll face Roncalli's Zach Wilson

The rest of the semifinals....

@152 We get Conway vs. Fitts.  Conway won 7-3 battle with Ev. Memorial's Aiden Farmer and Fitts got a physical 3-0 dec over FR's Andy Layden. Conway beat Fitts before Xmas 12-6.  Will that score expand, get closer or can Fitts turn it around?

@160 CBs Aiden Bowers got a 3-1 dec and Brody Baumann dominated Joey Terry (who beat Jordan Fulks 9-7 earlier - with a fall at 3:11 after being up big.  Baumann is looking like a beast today.  Fulks has battled back and will wrestle for 5th place after the opening round loss.

@170 MD's Blake Weidner hasn't been challenged.  He'll face Floyd Central's Codei Khawaja.  They did not meet in the team's dual Dec. 19.

@182 It looks to be the Gabe Sollars show.  He has been dominating overall and punishing on top.  Christian Bros 17-0 Gervacio Gonzalez will take a shot in the finals after having to come from behind to beat Mt. Vernon's Dalton Schmidt 8-7 in the semis.

@195 Two undefeateds will square off in Christian Bros Connor Billingsley 19-0 and Mt. Vernon's Blake Ritzert, 21-0.

@220 Ev. Memorial's Kelton Farmer dec MD's Nick Boots 6-2, avenging a dual meet loss in the first match of the year.  I believe that score was 9-3 Boots.  Farmer will face another Christian Bros upperweight, in Theo Sewell who has pinned his way to the Final.

@285 Portage's Corey Hill will face Father Ryan's Parker Peterson.  Peterson is big, strong and athletic.  He wrestles more like a lower weight than a heavy.  He won the MD Classic at 195 last year.

In the team race, Mater Dei and Christian Bros lead the way, with Floyd Central, Portage and Roncalli trailing.  Mt. Vernon, Father Ryan and Ev. Memorial round out the top 8.  MD should win easily, with almost a hundred point lead.

Mater Dei comes out strong winning with a fall at 106 and a TF at 113.

@120 Cole Ross and Lane Gilbert was worth the $9.95 by itself!!  Gilbert came away with a 4-2 win but it was a scrappy match.  Gilbert didn't score until the 3rd on a penalty point when Ross tried to turn him and scissored his head with his legs, missing getting the shoulder inside.  Ross then let him up for a 2-1 lead.  Lane got a quick takedown, followed by a quick Ross escape to make it 4-2.  Ross come close but couldn't get in close enough to tie it up.  Gilbert's defense is really good.

@126 Bryce Lowery remained the King with a 7-1 dec over Paul King.  Keegan Williams got the fall for 3rd Place and MD's Jacob Pierre battled back to 5th Place.  He needed a takedown in the last :30 to tie it and then scored 3 back points in the last :10 to win it.

@132 Not a lot of fireworks other than Alec Freeman taking down Coyle again and again.  Freeman gets a 16-3 win that included a penalty point for blatantly grabbing his nose and raking his face.  Which came shortly after Coyle dropping a knee to the back of Freeman's head.  Not a fan of the tactics, but I know guys get frustrated sometimes.  Freeman pretty much dominated from the opening whistle.

These two both should place top 5 again. Ross has great positioning and he's probably kicking' himself for the scissor and if he wouldn't have done that it very well could have been a 1-0 match at the end. Gilbert has some good offense as he was in on a DEEP shot in the 2nd and somehow Ross got out. Very impressed by the scrambling.

Blake Boarman takes the 138 lb title coming out of a scramble with less than :10 left to win 3-1.  Lots of action and scrambles for a low scoring affair.  Will see these two again, I'm sure!

Helluva bracket at 138!
Christian Brothers Dayne Dalrymple takes 3rd with a 3-1 win over Kody Glithero.  Chris Newman takes 5th with a 9-4 dec over Bradley Conrad of Portage.  I could see 4 or 5 of those guys at Banker's Life and Dalrymple looks strong to repeat as TN State Champ.

@145 Ashton Hayhurst came out like he was pissed off about the semifinal loss and won 3rd Place going away, securing the fall while up big.  Floyd Central's Frosh Hunter May took the title with a 6-2 dec over Roncalli's Zach Wilson.  Look forward to seeing another battle between May and Hayhurst!

@152 J Conway showed his dominance and ability to get to Scott Fitts legs at will, with a 13-4 win for the title.  When Fitts was able to get in a decent shot Conway was able to fend it off with relative ease.  Ev, Memorial's Aiden Farmer took 3rd with a 3-0 win.

@160 Brody Baumann looked as he had all day, simply dominant.  He took down Christian Bros Aidan Bowman with relative ease and only gave up escape points when he allowed it.  He finished it off with a 14-4 win over the TN DII 2nd Placer.  Gibson Southern's Owen Bryant took 3rd and Booneville's Jordan Fulks took 5th.
