What about Bloomington back when they only had football “state champions” determined by polls?

‘71-‘73 maybe? Those years were good for Bloomington, Kay Hutsell had some good wrestlers.  Football was great. They also won’t the state baseball in ‘72, and if not mistaken, swimming team took state around that time. Then in ‘74 or so the system built a new school north of town and split the students up. Wrestling sort of started waning then, but football kept up its state presence.

I do hope to see a Center Grove vs Merrillville match up for football. Merrillville looks TOUGH

Would love to see this inter-region matchup, but it's so hard to envision anyone taking down CG in football this year. Cathedral is the only one that would be less than a 2-touchdown underdog according to Sagarin's predictive ratings, but they're in the wrong class. You can only beat who you play, but Merrillville are 0-1 against Sagarin's statewide Top 25 (#5 Chatard), with two wins over the Top 64 (#29 Hobart and #35 Andrean). Meanwhile, CG are 6-0 inside the Top 25 with a 20-0 win their closest game.

All that said, you just don't know until they meet on the field. Although they've looked unbeatable in their two biggest games (42-0 and 47-0 over Carmel & North Central), CG's 20-0 and 35-12 "close-ish" wins were against Warren and BD, who are way down and not as good as Merrillville.

Center Grove and Cathedral play this Friday. Should be a good one. Merrillville lost to Chatard, so I don't see them competing with Cathedral or Center Grove on the gridiron. Then again, Center Grove got tested by LN last week so you never know what can happen on any given Friday night.

This is along the lines of the two sports benefiting each other.

Adams Central has been to semi state in football 3 of the last 4 years in class 1A and invited to each 1A State Duals.

Over 1/2 of the current football roster of 54 has a wrestling back ground.

20 are on the HS wrestling team and another 8 have wrestled previously either in MS or in our elementary club.

9 likely varsity wrestling starters are football players including everyone 152 and up.

Small schools have to share athletes for the school to have success in multiple sports.

Several of those same kids also play baseball in the spring.

The down side is the kids do not start wrestling practice until Thanksgiving.

2021 Forecast:

6A: Center Grove - year away when DrakeB is a senior maybe; Coach Buchanan has put the time in and it’s showing.

5A: Cathedral - In the mix. Preseason magazine says unlikely. Not in the Top5. Who is betting against them.
4A: Roncalli - McClurg lost a ton. If he is entered in 3A for duals, maybe a shot. At duals. Little Lowery.
3A: Chatard - They have a wrestling room for the first time in 40 years. Progress, but nah.

2A: Webo - Unless the extended offspring of Jon McClain and little bro emerge from the 90s, uphill battle.

1A - Covenant Christian - Pretty sure they don’t have a program.
