Olympic Redshirt Question

With the postponement of the Tokyo Olympics to 2021 how does that impact those like Micic and Yianni who took an Olympic Redshirt this season? Will the NCAA allow for a second Olympic Redshirt given the extenuating circumstances?

Still to be determined, it will definitely be an interesting situation.

Jury is still out on all of these questions, till we hear from NCAA powers to be.

According to Flo, the NCAA is scheduled to vote on Monday whether to allow another year of eligibility to athletes who had their season canceled due to coronavirus. They quote basketball reporters who believe that spring sports will get an extra year, but winter sports will not. I assume that any decision would extend to Olympic redshirt status as well, meaning you still only get one. If you took it in 2020 there will not be another redshirt year granted. Presumably we will all know in the next 4 days.

If your career aligns "perfectly" you can take two Olympic years. See Stevan Micic as an example.

Yeah, if they grant replacement Olympic redshirts for the upcoming year, it would be his third. Not many guys get to wrestle their last year of college eligibility in front of their grandkids, but Stevan is headed that way.

From the NCAA By-Laws

12.8.1.6 Athletics Activity Waiver. The Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, or a committee designated by it, shall have the authority to waive this provision by a two-thirds majority of its members present and voting to permit student-athletes to participate in: (Revised: 1/10/91, 1/9/96, 1/14/12, 7/31/14)

(a) Official Pan American, World Championships, World Cup, World University Games (Universiade), World University Championships and Olympic training, tryouts and competition;

(b) Officially recognized training and competition directly qualifying participants for final Olympic tryouts; or

(c) Official tryouts and competition involving national teams sponsored by the appropriate national governing bodies of the U.S. Olympic Committee (or, for student-athletes representing another nation, the equivalent organization of that nation, or, for student-athletes competing in a non-Olympic sport, the equivalent organization of that sport).

By "this provision" they mean the 5 year rule.

So it would seem now that the Division 1 Council has denied an additional year of eligibility to winter sports, it would then be up to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, or their designate, to decide on whether to grant an additional stoppage of the 5 year clock.

If Micic is allowed to take another OR he would then finish his collegiate career in 2022 after graduating in HS in 2014.  That would mean Senior Stevan Micic beat Freshman Nick Lee in 2014, yet Nick Lee would conclude his college eligibility before Micic.  Crazy!

He'll turn 26 that academic year. And he'll be transfer eligible and have great credentials. He could look for an opening and go for the ultra boss senior-year double of head coach-national champ.
