maligned
The first day of the Pan Am Olympic Qualifying event went on today as planned in Ottawa, Canada. The U.S. qualified 4 of the 6 Greco weights. Women's freestyle is tomorrow and men's freestyle on Sunday. Sarah Hildebrandt (Penn grad) at 50kg will be 3rd up in her first match when wrestling begins tomorrow at 10:30am. Kayla Miracle (Culver Academies grad) will be 9th on the mat at 62kg. Both ladies need to advance to the tournament final to place Top 2 and qualify the weight in the Olympics for the United States. They both have ladies in their half of the bracket who have placed high in the world in the past like themselves, so it will be an exciting day. maligned
Both ladies roll easily into the finals and qualify their weights for the US for the Olympics. They still have to win trials whenever they happen, but there's a definite Olympic spot waiting for them. Our ladies only qualified 4 of 6 weights last cycle, so this is really nice work by both girls. Congrats!! manchwrestlingdad
Trinedad
not really on topic, but related. How many other sports have someone qualify for the Olympics, and they not be given the spot? Don't misunderstand this, I love the trials, and watching the dreams come true, I am just curious how many other sports work like this.
maligned
In a sense, Track and Swimming work like this. We earn our 2, 3, 4 slots per event based on athletes' recent achievement of time standards. Then we have trials where someone can earn the right to be our rep whether they were one of the ones that previously met that standard or not. busstogate
Kind of thought it was bunk for the four who qualified to all default out of the finals. Sure, they would have probably all mashed and won it, but that "administrative planning" just looks bad, no matter the reason.
