Regional Advancement Percentage

Here’s a fun one. Which regional had the “best” performance?

To start things swingin’, I have (counted on fingers, toes, and whatever else) the Mooresville Regional at 27 for 56 on the day.

That’s 48.2% of advancements from EV coming from 25% of the kids. Around a 2/weight class average. Pretty good!

Did anywhere else beat it?

I was following EC SS on Track and the 145 semi-finals had just finished. I counted it up quickly and realized the CP regional had 12 of the 14 SS finalists through 145. Thankfully, the other regionals dominated the upper weights and the 28 finalists ended up being a bit more balanced.

By these numbers, Ft. Wayne was by far the most balanced semi-state followed by New Castle.

FW was very balanced on the day. Goshen had the least state qualifiers but the most ticket rounders and only one less finalist than two of the regionals, while Peru had the least ticket rounders but tied for the most state qualifiers and SS champs.

By total wins and losses:

Goshen 47-57 (45%)

Carroll 62-54 (53%)

Jay County 59-57 (51%)

Peru 56-56 (50%)

Jay County Sectional 145 Fiechter, Dull, and Currie. Also all three from the same conference.

Reminds me of the 1994 Snider Regional at 145...Only top 3 advanced back then and they got 1st, 2nd, and 4th at State...and one of them was Currie's dad.

No surprise here that the Jeffersonville regional is the weakest in the state.... should have never realigned that regional.

The old alignment wouldn’t have done much better.  Remove 1 qualifier with Tell City, add 2 qualifiers with Floyd Central.  I think on a different day, the Jeff sectional could have sent a few more qualifiers.

Your doubling your qualifiers. And you have look at the draw Floyd’s third amigo Alstott would have had..

How do these numbers compare to the strength of the sectionals and regionals as stated by the team state qualification points based on the genius rankings?

Is the best way to check by looking at third placers at the only level two regional,  Hobart, to see if they advanced to the ticket round even though the formula says they don’t deserve semi state points?

Heard on the local news (I think) that FW had champions from 14 different schools. No one got a second champ. Don't know if I've ever seen that before.

This is a tough comparison that sometimes works but mostly doesn't. The Categories are simply a measure of how many regional-quality people are at each sectional or how many semi-state first round quality wrestlers are at a given regional--nothing more. When you have a regional like Hobart with lots of high-end talent from 3 schools, it seems silly to somehow suggest it's the "weakest" regional. It's not that. It's the "least crowded"--meaning there isn't a lot of depth in terms of overall number of kids that would qualify for semi-state from an average level regional around the state.

It's like Yorktown's sectional for many years: it would often have 9 or 10 state qualifiers--well above average--while being considered one of the worst sectionals according to our measurement. The problem was that after Yorktown, there was very little depth in terms of causing difficulty for advancing to regional. But of course Yorktown would get 8 to state and there'd be another 1 or 2 from someone else and it seems like a killer sectional based on number of state qualifiers. It's two entirely different measurements.
