Article: Who do you want in your corner?

Recommended Posts

Throughout the history of the state finals the number of state placers has grown from four to six and finally to eight in 1992. With the addition of the 7th and 8th place finishers came the Friday night win or go home match for all the competitors. Throughout the years we have seen amazing matches and crazy upsets on Friday night.

After some thought we wanted to know which coach had the best winning percentage on Friday night. We compiled all the data from 1992 until 2019 and came up with the following information. Please note that included in these statistics are qualifiers that did not end up participating at state due to injury. This mildly affects a coach’s percentage as it is a rare occurrence an athlete does not participate on Friday night.

Very interesting data, Y2.  Thank you for sharing.

What I think would be nice to see is how well all the wrestlers did on Friday night based on how well they were “expected” to do (based on their “seedings”  ... or maybe rankings).  That might be a bit better measure of who you want in your corner.

No, I don’t expect you to add the next level of complexity.  I just appreciate the work you’ve already done to supply this info.  Thank you.

I was thinking the same thing.

Or how many of the qualifiers overachieved by even qualifying. Along the lines of "who do you want in your corner for the ticket round?"

Considering the above replies, plus the statistical data, who do you want? Who knows your strengths and your opponents weaknesses. Who can see how the match is developing? Who can give the best advice as things unfold?Maybe most important, whose voice cuts through the commotion and drowns out the other corner?

He inherited a pretty solid program to say the least.

Had a state champ at mooresville prior to coming over. But yes... he had a solid squad when he got to Avon. With that said, super good with the kids (on and off the mat). Great motivator and all around good dude.

Lots of guys coach for a long time and never get a champ. Let alone four. Maybe more before it’s said and done. He’s a solid pick.

Synder would be a good pick too. Always has his kids ready.

None of the statistical data would change my choice. I'd stick with the guys that invested most of their lives into the program that prepared me for the opportunity (and put up with me for the whole journey).

Loyalty is a great quality that is taken for granted by many!

Good stuff.

One could make a case that the absolute number is at least as important as the percentage.

For sure and the SS they brought their guys through! Mcginley,Tonte and Peckinpaugh put many guys through a SS that's never had a down year that I can recall..love this data!

I want someone who has not been mentioned yet, Dave Fleming. He was in my sons corner a few times, and he is an outstanding coach.

Just curious, is Dave already in the hall of fame for all his contributions to Indiana wrestling?

I will take Snyder any day of the week...……….not to mention if he was not in the corner then you run the risk of him being across the mat in the other corner and that is bad news for you.

4 days......oh boy !!!
