wrestlenewbie
checking the Senior National pre-seeds today I only see one Indiana wrestler in freestyle. Nick Lee is the 11 seed at 65kg. This is an Olympic trials qualifier event. Top 5 make the Oly trials. There is a murderers row in front of him: Yianni Diakomihalis (Titan Mercury WC) Jordan Oliver (Sunkist Kids) Frank Molinaro (Titan Mercury WC) Evan Henderson (Titan Mercury WC) Jaydin Eierman (Titan Mercury WC) Joey McKenna (Titan Mercury WC) Bryce Meredith (New York AC) Ben Whitford (Titan Mercury WC) Dom Demas (Titan Mercury WC) Dean Heil (Titan Mercury WC) Nick Lee (Nittany Lion WC) Jayson Ness (Gopher WC) Colton McCrystal (Sunkist Kids) Sean Fausz (Titan Mercury WC) SWINfan
MattM
Olympic year weight classes really squeeze the competition into the few spots. Nick has an uphill battle on his hands, but he's never been one to shy away from the competition.

It will be interesting to see how he adjusts from folkstyle to freestyle and back mid-season. I like that Penn State left a gap in their schedule from Dec. 8 to Jan 10 to allow guys to train and compete in the Olympic qualifying event. Other notes from Penn State - Matt and/or Joe Lee may be making an appearance at the Wilkes Open this Sunday (Dec 22). Most of Penn State's wrestlers not going to Senior Nationals will wrestle at this event. Obviously Matt would be wrestling under the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club, not affiliated with Penn State. Joe Lee is also likely slated to wrestle at the Southern Scuffle Jan. 1-2. Not sure if he would wrestle in the Wilkes Open and the Scuffle so we'll see this weekend how that shakes out. SWINfan
TIDBITS As most of you already know Nick Lee finished 3rd at Senior Nationals last weekend. He started off with a 10-0 TF over former NCAA Finalist Ethan Lizak, and followed up with a big 10-6 win over Jaydin Eierman. That set up a Quarterfinal win against Joey Lazor, again a 10-0 TF. He lost in the Semifinal 10-0 to Jordan Oliver. He bounced back with a 10-0 TF over former NCAA Champ and Olympian Frank Molinaro. Yianni D FF'd the 3rd/4th Match. The result qualifies Nick for the Olympic Team Trials. - Joe Lee finished 1st at the Wilkes Open winning 5 straight matches. He had two falls, a 20-3 TF, a 31-16 TF and a 6-3 win over Lehigh's starter Bryan Meyer. - Matt Lee lost his first match at 157, 7-4 and dropped to the consolation bracket (to 5th Place). Matt won his next 5 matches to reach the consolation final. That match wasn't wrestled, as he would have faced the same wrestler he lost to in round 1. - Brayton Lee picked up a win in a dual against South Dakota State and Chad Red won in a dual against Oregon St. Both were decision victories. - Duke, Minnesota and Michigan State are slated to wrestle in the South Beach Duals Dec 29-30. - It is believed Joe Lee will wrestle in the Southern Scuffle in Chattanoga Jan 2-3. - The Midlands is Dec 29-30 w/ Purdue, Indiana, Northwestern, Central Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Illinois, etc Any others? SWINfan
I wrestled (no pun intended) with whether to post this at all or where. Decided not to make it a thread of its own, but since it is public record and published in the news, here goes.... Not sure how this will affect IU going forward.... Speaking of IU,.... Anyone have any updates on Brock Hudkins or Paul Konrath? If Hudkins, Luigs and Konrath are out, that puts a serious damper in their outlook. Could the RS come off for Cayden Rooks? IU Wrestler Kyle Luigs Arrested
SWINfan
Took a quick look at the brackets for the Midlands that begin on Saturday. Things that jumped out to me at first glance... - Brock Hudkins looks to be back for IU. He is the 4 seed. - Drew Hildebrandt is the 5 seed, so a match up with Hudkins could happen in the Quarterfinals if the seeds hold up - Cayden Rooks drew Gavin Teasdale of Iowa in the first round. Both are unseeded and the winner will face 5-seed Louie Hayes of Virginia. - No Kyle Luigs, Asa Garcia or Paul Konrath for IU. Does The Midlands not allow Unattached wrestlers anymore? - Alec White is unseeded and will wrestle 14 seed Carter Happel of Iowa in Round 1 - Kyle Todrank drew #1 seed and top ranked Austin O'Connor in the first round at 149 - Kendall Coleman is the 3 seed at 157 - Nick South is the 13 seed at 165 - 174 is loaded with Hoosier natives... Dylan Lydy is the top seed. Ben Harvey is seeded 4th, Jacob Covaciu 5th and Donnell Washington is the 9 seed. - Lucas Davison is the 6 seed at 197. Nick Willham is unseeded and drew the 2-seed Pat Brucki of Princeton- - Thomas Penola is unseeded at 285. He drew 16 seed Jordan Earnest of Ohio. navy80
Mattyb
@SWINfan Asa is banged up a bit. He was chomping at the bit to wrestle this weekend. He will be back better than ever soon. Same with The Peanut Butter and Jelly man. They both have solid winning records to start their careers. Look for them both to be at some more opens soon. Can’t wait to see the others from last years high school graduate class to wrestle this weekend. Great group of kids. Loki27
Could have an all Indiana top half of the quarter finals at 174. Which will guarantee an Indiana native in the final.

navy80
G. Rooks unseeded and beats the #4 seed. Rooks is 2-0 and has Virginia in the round of 16. Mccormick Army the 4 seed. As Loki said, the top half of 174...is half Indiana kids. If they all win they face each other and we are guaranteed someone in the finals! Lydy PU, Washington IU, Harvey Army, Covaciou IU 133 is sick.. Rivera/Gross on one side wrecking kids. Winner gets DeSanto.

wrestlenewbie
Brock Hudkins had a massive third period in the semis against Pat Glory (6th as a true freshman last year). It was tied at 5 with Hudkins on top. He got hit for an illegal move (announcer speculated it was a full nelson) before riding Glory out to reverse a 1 minute plus riding time disadvantage and re-tie the match. Sadly he gets injured during sudden victory. It looked like a knee but hard to know for sure. He had to be carried from the mat after having to concede. A real shame for him and hopefully he is able to recover quickly as this looked to be his year.

wrestlenewbie
Lydy Harvey rematch in the first period of semis. Nomad "familiarity breeds contempt they say" after a first period without a single leg attack which ends 0-0. Lydy starts period 2 on top with just 5 seconds of riding time (and that was generous from the timer). Big scramble leads to nothing. After contact lens stoppage time (is that a thing?) Lydy tries a double but OB. And it ends 1-0 Harvey. Lydy up and out in 5 seconds. Deja vu. There was a shot, re-shot in the period that came to nothing, but otherwise just cagey. SV-1 Lydy goes right leg single 21 seconds in for the 3-1 win.

wrestlenewbie
Joe Lee wrestles tomorrow morning unattached at the Southern Scuffle. He is unseeded. The top seed goes to Shane Griffith of Stanford. Griffith is 36-2 between his red shirt year last year and his freshmen year so far this year. One of his losses was a tight match at last year's Scuffle to Vincenzo Joseph. That said Lee and Griffith have wrestled once before with Lee prevailing. Of course it was 4 years ago and freestyle, so a lot of mitigating factors. They are on the same side of the bracket so could meet in semis. I saw the brackets came out tonight and thought he got a good draw. Granted anything can happen, but he would meet Griffith in the semis if he can get to that point. This tourney should give us a good barometer of where he is and how ready he may be to step into the Penn State lineup next year.Southern Scuffle

He'll likely face Connor Flynn, of Missouri, the 6 seed. Check that, now Joe has a Round of 32 matchup. He will face Chris Fasano from The Citadel shortly. SWINfan
Southern Scuffle Joe Lee got a quick 1st period TF (16-1) over Chris Fasano of The Citadel in the Round of 32. He got a 1st period fall (2:17) over Connor Flynn of Missouri. Flynn had been wrestling 174 this season and dropped to 165 after losing twice to Mizzou's starter Jeremiah Kent. Joe lost his quarterfinal match to 8th ranked Thomas Bullard of NC State, 9-4. He drops to the consolation bracket where action will resume tomorrow morning. He'll face Randy Meneweather of Air Force in the blood round. Edited January 2, 2020 by SWINfan warsawwrestling and Loki27
