Hoosiers in College 2019-2020 Results

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, it's that time again.  Thanks to Uncle Jimmy for the wake up call!  Just got back from a 2 week vacation and still have a bit of a hangover from the time off and a 5 hour time difference!  I won't be able to post as much this year due to other responsibilities, but I'll do what I can.  Please feel free to post results whenever you have time and let's not forget about the guys at smaller or more distant schools!

The season begins today with the Michigan State Open and the Battle on the Midway, with Hoosiers appearing in both.

Lastly, if anyone wants to update and track what wrestlers are at what school, the spreadsheet I kept last year is available.  It includes wrestlers at all levels separated by tabs.  Just needs an update with incoming freshmen and transfers.

Some quick results from the Michigan State Open today....

Frosh/Soph Division
133 Cayden Rooks IU - 4th Place
141 Asa Garcia IU - 3rd Place
165 Nick South IU - 2nd Place
174 - Donnell Washington IU - 2nd Place
-- note: He lost by DQ in the title match.  Anyone that was there or watched online willing to share what happened?
184 - Carson Brewer Ohio U - 1st Place
197 - Nick Willham IU - 1st Place

Open Division
125 - An all-Indiana final with Brock Hudkins IU winning by 3-2 decision over Drew Hildebrandt Cent. Mich.
174 - Dylan Lydy Purdue - DNP - Won his first two matches by Major and them MFF'd out of the tourney.  Details anyone?
285 - Mason Parris Michigan, took 1st Place with a 9-2 decision over Matt Stencel of Cent. Mich.  They wrestled 3x last year, with all 3 matches ending by fall.  Stencel won 2 of the 3.  Mason gets a little revenge and shows he can take Stencel the distance.

141 in the Open Division wasn't Indiana related, but #3 Luke Pletcher of OSU beat #1 Dom Demas of Oklahoma 2-1 TB1.  You could easily see that match again at the NCAA's.  Nick Lee is ranked #2 at 141.

My apologies if I missed anyone.  Looks like a nice way to start the season.

The slam call on DJ Washington was very controversial. He lifted the kid up and put him straight on his back. DJ was to the side and looked to hit the ground with the kid. I was talking to Nick Willhams grandpa when it happened. He is a high school and college ref. We both agreed that a slam should not have been called.

The kid that got returned to the mat is a great kid. He used to live in Lawrenceburg and moved to Cincinnati for high school. Unfortunately he suffered a stinger as the result of the impact and could not continue. I truely believe that if he could of continued he would of. As matter of fact, he tried and was told no by the trainers.

Just a bad call and bad all around deal. DJ did great today.

The state got shutout at the Battle of the Citadel...

@141 Ty Mills, Duke draws 2x NCAA Qualifier and NCAA All-American, #15 Sa'Darien Perry as his first collegiate match and loses 0-6.  Then gets majored his next match for the official dip.  Almost 18 months since he last competed, so happy to see him back on the mat.

@149 Bryton Goering, Presbyterian loses his first match and is winning his consolation match, but gets caught.

Oh well... tough day, but getting better and Duke will be at the Mountaineer Invite next week.

Is Ty starting this year, or are they still figuring out the lineup?

I think they are still getting things figured out with redshirts and the weights.  He won his initial wrestle-off at 141, but another kid who has been 149 may be dropping to 141 and Ty lost that match at a 146 catch-weight.  He's a tiny 141 and would probably drop to 133 if the coaches thought that was in the team's best interest, but I know they are trying to bulk him up.  He wants to be in the starting lineup and we'll just have to compare the results over the next several tournaments and see what shakes out before our dual season starts.  Either way, just glad he's back on the mat and ready to take his lumps (and give some!) while he adjusts to the college style.

Also Friday night, Rider beat Minnesota 21-17.  Two results from former IN kids....
@149 Brayton Lee won by 11-7 decision over Gino Fluri.  Lee controlled the match for the most part, but gave up a late takedown when looking for the major.
@285 Bobby Steveson lost 1-0 to Ryan Cloud.  Down, 18-17, a Steveson win would have swung the dual for the Gophers but a second period escape by Cloud was the only score of the match.

Nick Lee wins by Tech Fall in Penn State's match tonight. Penn State gets beat by ASU... 19-18..

IU gets beat up pretty good by ND State 26-12.. Covaciu and Rooks won.

Noah Cressell (North Dakota State) over Jake Hinz (Indiana) (SV-1 8-6). Pretty sure Cressell is the Indiana Cressell.

You would be correct on Noah Cressel.  Good to see him get the start back in the home state.

Penn State result surprising, but not really.  They forfeited 184 and Brady Berge did not wrestle 157.  Swing matches for ASU were 149 Maruca over Verkleeren and 197 beating Kyle Conel.  Getting a major at 125 was big as well.
