How does your school, when it has has more then one stud, decide who will take home the MVP that year? Team points, Match points, how far they go in state series, a Co-MVP?...Will one way handicap or skew the results unfairly (like if someone is a quick pinner)?

No, no, no.... you just give it to the best kid. It’s a coaches opinion. Doesn’t have to explain anything or be politically correct. You just pick the best kid on your team and give it to them. If someone thinks they are better they should have proved it. That’s it!

We do most team points scored, minus points given up.  For example, this year we had a three horse race. Most valuable went to the kid with 171 net team points.  2nd on team had 165 and 3rd had 155.  Most valuable wrestler also led team in wins, tied for 1st in pins, was a sectional and regional champ, 3rd at semi state and placed 6th at state. Typically this had always worked out for us that it is the kid that goes the farthest in the state tournament.  They generally lead in most statistical categories.

True! Unfortunately it hasnt always happened that way at our school. Most Match points is what is used as the criteria. It doesn't make logical sense and history has shown it to be a faulty.

Numbers is  just one aspect of being the team MVP. Who doesn’t miss practice? Who never slacks in practice? Who makes other kids better. Who leads by example in the classroom? Who is the mentally toughest kid? Who is the most valuable WRESTLER? Not who scored the most points. Btw... sometimes it is the kid that wins the most. But..... sometimes it’s not.

So... what if a kid wrestles at a school like Plainfield. They may have 2 top 5 state ranked kids in their county and sectional. That kid may take losses to those kids and may not make it out of regionals. Where as another kid may luck out and have no ranked kids in their sectional or county. That kid may make semi state. Clearly one of these kids have an easier route. Does the second kid really deserve team MVP over the first kid?

We do a MOW.  Most Outstanding.  It takes the guesswork out.  Who went the farthest.   Your MOW AND MVP(W) are definitely or can definitely be different.

You have a wrestle off 😋

This is especially effective when trying to decide if, say, it comes down to if your 113 lber or 182 lber is the best on the team; odds are the wrestleoff should clear up who is actually better.

AC is similar to Garrett. We don't give a MVW award, but give a BAGUBA of the year, since BAGUBA involves more than just winning. It typically goes to the wrestler who advances the farthest in the tournament, but this year Macklin and Mosser shared it. Macklin placed while Mosser was eliminated Friday night, but Mosser had a better regular season and embodied the personality of a BAGUBA.
