Crazy it took from 1959-1986 to get one. Now it’s happening about every 2 years from 2000-2019

Think we are do for a freshman champ in a heavier weight class. Seems to be even less common.

Parris had a great shot doing it but Seniors in the upper weights out do the Freshman probably from 132, Blake at 130 been our heaviest to do it since (1943). Be tough, might see a Gable Stevenson roll through here . All records go down at some point .

I think, if I'm not mistaken, that many schools and maybe even an IHSAA rule during this time frame that freshman didn't compete on varsity teams. I bet the Ancient Elder could give us more accurate information about this.

Good point, but looking at Joe’s stats per years , there was Freshman competing in the State Tournament.

When I was in high school in the early to mid 90s our freshmen went to the junior high and wrestled other freshman teams only.

In the mid 70's when I was a Freshman, it was the same deal that we had Jr. High that was 7th, 8th and 9th grade.  I did wrestle on the varsity but there were very few Jr. High 9th graders that participated on any High School varsity teams.  My memory is a little blurred, but as I remember, I wrestled, 1 girl was on the varsity gymnastics team and 1 guy was on the varsity basketball team and we were the only freshman competing with the varsity.  It was difficult as I remember, because I had to walk from the Jr. High to the High School after school every day for practice. Most athletes participated on the freshman teams, however we did not have wrestling in our Jr. High at the time.

...a little more to that story.  The High School would not give us our varsity letters because we were in Jr. High and didn't attend the high school.  We had to contact the school board/superintendent to get the school to release our varsity letters while we were still at the Jr. High. Off topic a bit, but I thought you might find it interesting.

I don’t think it was an IHSAA rule.  Some schools included grades 7-9 as junior high, and some of those schools didn’t allow the ninth graders to “wrestle up” with their high school team.  That wasn’t true across the board though.

I know in the 70’s we competed against a couple schools where 9th grade was junior high.  But I remember right before sectionals they “called up” some wrestlers from their freshman team.  (I remember one of them being Maurice Swain’s uncle or dad.)

Little known fact, but Estell Ritter was held back solely for wrestling.  Also for farming because it was a tough crop back in 1924, but none the less his parents seemed to be concerned with his wrestling career.

Another little known fact: Estell was a woman!

I don't know how widespread it was, but Bloomington South didn't have freshman wrestle in the early 70s, otherwise, Randy May would have been on the list of four-time champs. Freshmen were wrestling at least by 74.

Surprised me that even in the modern era there have been so few, especially those over 106/113!

Mendez has some good company in Tsirtsis and Maurer on the list

Im wondering how many freshmen came one match short - runner up - at weights 126 and up especially those upper weights

I think I read an interview with Randy May in which he said he wasn’t the varsity 98 pounder as a freshman because he was a very much underweight for the weight class a freshman.

I stand corrected. Nevertheless, he was a lot of fun to watch. He talked about in the same way the four-timers are today.
