Coach Cook was welcomed to Hobart High School this season. This Valparaiso Alum is glad to be back in "Da Region." Before graduating from Valpo High school, Jason Cook was a 3x state finalist. As a freshman 103, Cook put up a 44-7 record finishing 2nd in the state. The next year as a 112 sophmore, Cook was upset at the regional tournament ending with a record of 36-3. As a junior 125, Cook found himself under the light of the state finals once again. Ending his junior season as state runner-up and a record of 38-3. Senior year, Jason Cook brought a state title back to the region with a record of 48-0. He capped off his high school career with a career record of 168-13. Along with a state title, Cook won the 2002 Ward E. Brown IHSAA Mental Attitude Award, and was a recipient of the Harold F. Mumby Award for most valuable wrestler. Cook went on to wrestle in-state for the Boilermakers of Purdue University. During his career at Purdue, Cook wrestled in the 141 weight class. Cook was a 2004 Kent State Open Champ and a 2005 Body Bar Invite Champ. He had wins over multiple NCAA Qualifiers and NCAA All-Americans. Returning home, Jason was an assistant coach for Chesterton High school for 8 years where he had multiple state placers. Cook has coached at West Lafayette HS, Fischers, and now Hobart. Hobart is proud to have Jason as a coach, and we know he is pumped to be a Brickie. This year Jason inherited a young team with only 1 senior in total. The Brickies had 11 semi-state qualifiers, and return 13 starters next year. Cook now resides in Valpo with his wife Jen, and their cats 🐱.

Special guest ISWA State Chairman Keith Davison!!

Keith Davison

Davidson_Keith_Action.jpg

Many of us know Keith Davison, if not here is a little background on our state chairman. Davison comes to us from the Trojans of Chesterton High School. As a Sophomore, Keith took 3rd in the state at 167lbs. He compiled a record of 32-4. The very next year he moved his way up the podium and finished his Junior season with a State title at 171lbs. He finished with a record of 37-2. Unblemished his senior year with a record of 38-0, he capped his career with another state title. Again at 171lbs. That same year Davison became a Junior Freestyle National Runner-Up. Heading to the Big Ten Davison would pursue his degree and wrestling career for the Badgers of Wisconsin. In 1990 Davison was named Big Ten Freshman of the year. After a sophomore season that he considered subpar, he sat out his junior season in order to move up a weight class in hopes of achieving better results. The move paid off and Davison was an All-American in the next 2 seasons. 3rd in 1993 and 5th in 1994. During the 1994 season Davison would also capture a Big ten title. Davison's 114 career wins rank him 10th in UW wrestling history. The 4 year letter winner would come back to his home town of Chesterton to be an assistant coach for the Trojans. In 2003 he was inducted to the IHSWCA Hall of Fame and in 2014 selected as ISWA's Kid's Coach of the Year. Coach Davison would help coach Chesterton to many state placers and state champions, including his sons Andrew and Lucas. Who are both Big Ten wrestlers as well. Davison still volunteers at Chesterton. Keith Davison was voted in as the state chairman of the ISWA and has instilled that we have wrestling excellence in Indiana. Quote: "I do feel that as an organization we need to focus more of our attention and efforts toward pursuing and expecting wrestling excellence.  Having spent forty years in the sport as an athlete, coach and president of our local club coupled with my experience serving on national teams for the past six years, I have a unique perspective which I intend to leverage to help us move forward and re-tool some of our processes."  Here at the Hobart RTC we are excited and privileged to have a great wrestling mind in the room. Do not miss out!

Before High School he was a Cadet freestyle all american placing 5th at nationals in 1997. The next year as a freshman at 103 pounds he placed 4th in the state. Maldonado went on to wrestle for the Wildcats at Northwestern University. He was a letter winner and took his success into coaching. Bobby Joe took a huge roll with his brother Timmy as they were the assistant coaches at Munster for a lot of their success. Bobby Joe coached former state champion in High school Eric McGill. After his time at Munster he coached along side with his brother once again, and legendary coach that is also his cousin, David Maldonado at Merrillville. Bobby Joe has coached all the Streck brothers, Jacob Coviacu, and other state caliber wrestlers during his time at Munster and Merrillville.  Now he has taken over as the Head Coach of Calumet College of St.Joseph, where he is looking to build a program back up.
