smitty11
Rematch from earlier in the year. Wish this one was under the lights.
brickfor6
I've been watching Jesse since he was little, and I can say, I think that he is doing his best wrestling right now. He is really turning it on this post season. Pinned his way to a semi-state title, pins over Logan Hill, Brock Peele, and Brendon Mark. pritchem
base
If Mendez is able to get past Watts and reach the finals, should still be a great matchup under the lights with Curtis, Walendzak, Rioux as the likely suspects, or perhaps Brock Peele rematch
Caleb Spires
Definitely the premier match of the tournament. I expect the score to be closer than the Al Smith match. Both are always on the attack, should be a lot of action. Mendez is probably the best freshman I have ever seen and I think this match is the determining factor between a one-loss 3x champ and undefeated 4xer. I’d like to say the senior vs. freshman aspect will be a factor, but it never seems like the moment is too big for Jesse. navy80
This is a classic. You have the nationally ranked freshman who has to hypothetically/probably beat two former state champions to his the tournament.
doctorWrestling
I think Watts gets him this time. It was a good match that I thought could have gone the other way at Al Smith and the loss will do nothing but help him improve.
gogoplata89
This reminds me of the Cashe Quiroga v Jason Tsirtsis semi final back in 2009. Freshman phenom meets up with a state champ in the semis. I think we know how that turned out. piscis1956, Jayruss and base

smitty11
Yes the first match was pretty close. Mendez got in on about 3-4 good shots but could not finish. Watts almost had Mendez on his back late in the third. Two good wrestlers with high motors.

That one will be hard to top going forward. Jayruss

BClark
We maybe didn't realize it at the time but 2005 had a pretty good one too. Championship Reece Humphrey (48-0) Lawrence North (12) def. Andrew Howe (47-1) Hanover Central (9), dec. 5-1. Jayruss, backtothemat, JHS95151 and 3 others

Hype-wise was where I was coming from. Micic A LOT more heralded (and rightly so) than Watts. Mendez and Lee have similar pedigrees as Freshmen. smitty11
Quiorga seemed to be a solid favorite that year. Cashe ran through everyone. Tsirtsis had a solid game plan in the semifinals that year. Tsirtsis may have lost in a dual against the merriville wrestler on a late reversal? Then maj. dec him at semi-state Micic took it to Lee if I recall. Edited February 13, 2019 by smitty11
qball
Watts showed great energy last weekend, Looks like a man on a mission! Mendez dominated the whole field. No match lasting enough to get his blood pumping. The last time Mendez went all the way to the third was along time ago, and I could bet watts has not either until against Curtis. Watts was the better wrestler against Curtis. This will be epic! Mendez with his relentless attack and watts with Defense and length. Could go either way! Champ725
Congrats to Watts on a great career but that match was pretty one sided and dominated by Mendez.... looks like he is on his way to 4 timer status rdrodd1, Kookie953 and Jayruss

RaiderColfax
Mendez is just on another level here, majors a returning state champ in the semis. And made it look so easy, I’m just in wow when I watch him wrestle. If Rioux can keep it under a major I’ll be surprised. Good luck to both under the lights!! Caleb Spires
Mendez is by far the best Indiana freshman I’ve seen so far and I can’t see him losing a match all of high school. Jayruss

GoldenBoy219
Beating former Indiana high school state champs is nothing new for Mendez. I can think of at least three, not to mention beating last years state champ last year when he was still in junior high....
