Individuals:

One semi-state has 82 ranked kids

The other has 78 ranked kids

One semi-state has 20 Top 5 kids

The other has 24 Top 5 kids

One semi-state has 21 wrestlers ranked between #6 - #10

The other has 20 wrestlers ranked between #6 - #10

One semi-state has 20 wrestlers ranked between #11 - #15

The other has 21 wrestlers ranked between #11 - #15

Team Power Poll:

One semi-state has -- #1, #3, #4, #11, #12

The other has -- #2, #5, #7, #9, #16, #19, #20

Team State Finish:

One semi-state has -- #1, #4, #5, #10

The other has -- #2, #3, #6, #7, #8

Is it really that easy to identify the best semi-state?

8 #1's in one semi state with 82 ranked wrestlers and 3 of the top 4 in the power poll. No, not too tough

New Castle has 20% more wrestlers ranked in the Top 5 & 40% more teams ranked in the Top 20.  Personally I would call them damn near a draw in toughness to advance, but I guess using #'s for factual reasoning is an error of mine.

I guess that depends on how you are defining “best”.  If “best” means the semi-state with the most state champions predicted by the rankings guy, then perhaps.  If “best” means the one with the most hype, then definitely.  (The Region seems to be falling down in that area a bit this year.  Where is Da Rat and his cohorts been this year?)

But if you are defining “best” as “most crowded” with high quality wrestlers (as I think Maligned calls it), then not so much.

Equating the Evansville Semi-State with the “South” is very much a misnomer.

Hendricks County and western Marion County couldn’t be much more Central Indiana.  And schools from the likes of the Decatur, Franklin, Dearborn, and other counties are a whole lot more south than those schools. Maybe the Evansville Semi-State teams could be called the “Dirty Southwest-ish”.

Ah sarcasm. We've each used numbers to reach a conclusion. I guess we've just interpreted them differently. New Castle has always been one of the top 2 semi states and is again this year. I just happen to think Evansville is a little better this year because of the #'s I used. Feel free to continue using #'s in your reasoning, but remember these are all opinions and not "factual".

I think he was making the point that since we have to listen to all the Hendricks County hubris this time of year about Sectionals, Regionals, and Semi-State quality, there is not a significant difference between Evansville, New Castle, or even East Chicago. The only historically light semi-state is New Haven.
