Hoosiers in College - Results/Updates - 1st Half

Recommended Posts

@125 Drew Hildebrandt has 3 wins and is in the quarterfinals, facing #1 seed and National Champion Spencer Lee.

@141 Alec White and Kyle Todrank both got one win in the consolations before bowing out at 1-2.  Nathan Boston lost in the Round of 16 and dropped to the consis.

@149 Brayton Lee is in the Quarterfinals with wins over two seeded wrestlers, #10 Cole Martin 3-2 TB1 and #7 Anthony Artalona 5-3. Both are nice wins.  As a reward he faces #2 Seed Alec Pantaleo of Michigan.
@149 Tristan Sellmer dropped 2 straight.
@149 Graham Rooks lost by TF to #1 seed Matthew Kolodzik, won 1 in the consis before losing to Sammy Sasso by fall and finishing 1-2.

@157 Kasper McIntosh dropped 2 straight.

@165 Brad Laughlin dropped a 7-1 dec. to Anthony Valencia, won one in the consis and bowed out falling 7-6 to Jake Allar of Minnesota, finishing 1-2.

@174 Ben Harvey won his first match by major and then lost a heart breaker to former Cadet World Champ Aaron Brooks.  Harvey scored a reversal with :22 remaining to lead 8-6.  Brooks escaped and scored a takedown and two nearfall points with :07 remaining.  A riding time point made it a 12-8 win for Brooks.  I think Brooks was mis-seeded by talent, but with only one tournament this year so far its difficult.

@184 Jacob Gray won his 1st match then fell to the top seed Drew Foster.  He dropped to the consolations and will face fellow Hoosier Thomas Penola.
@184 Thomas Penola dropped a tough first found match in SV, then bounced back with a win by major and will face Gray next.

@197 David Eli won his 1st match by major then fell to the top seed Patrick Brucki.
@197 Brothers Andrew and Lucas Davison both had two solid decision wins and are in the quarterfinals.  Fortunately they are on opposite sides of the bracket.

@197 Bobby Steveson dropped 2 straight.

@285 Mason Parris bumped to the #5 seed and has won two straight by 2nd period fall.  He faces #4 seed Trent Hilger of Wisconsin in the quarterfinals.

The next session starts at 7:00 central time tonight.

@125 Spencer Lee TF's Drew Hildebrandt 18-0

@141 Nathan Boston drops a 5-1 decision to Purdue's Ben Freeman and is eliminated.

@149 Brayton Lee loses 3-2 to #2 seed Alec Pantaleo.  Didn't see the match, but that has to be considered a good result in the big picture.  As good as a loss can be viewed.  My guess is Pantaleo wins the whole thing.  Lee could face Jacori Teemer tomorrow morning.

@174 Ben Harvey with the fall to stay alive.

@184 Penola takes out Gray 10-2 to stay alive.

@197 Andrew Davison dropped to the consolation bracket after a 3-0 loss to Army's Rocco Caywood.
@197 Brother Lucas Davison advanced to the semifinal with a 4-2 win over Army's Alex Hopkins.  He'll face Tanner Sloan, South Dakota State unattached.  Sloan the #7 seed took out #2 seed jacob Warner of Iowa by TF.
@197 David Eli lost by fall to Landon Pelham and is eliminated.

@285 Mason Parris moves on with a 9-6 decision over Trent Hillger of Wisconsin. He'll face #8 seed Conan Jennings of Northwestern.  Jennings advanced with a MFF from #1 seed Sam Stoll of Iowa.  Would have liked to see Parris get a shot at Stoll.

After Day 1, only Lucas Davison and Mason Parris remain in the Championship bracket and will begin in the semifinals in the morning.  Hildebrandt, Lee, Harvey, Penola and Andrew Davison are alive in the consolation bracket.

Note on Parris' quarterfinal win...   Trent Hillger was ranked 8th by Intermat and undefeated at 15-0 as far as I can tell.  He handled Chase Singletary of Ohio State in a dual.  Singletary beat Parris earlier this year 15-9 (Michigan State Open?).  That's a nice win...  Mason has a reasonable path to the finals and a shot to win the whole thing.

The Midlands continue - Day 2

@125 Drew Hildebrandt dropped his blood round match and was eliminated.

@149 Brayton Lee fell 9-7 to Jacori Teemer in the blood round and was eliminated.  Teemer gains revenge from their Dream Team AS match up.

@174 Ben Harvey won his first match to guarantee placement, then dropped his next match.  He'll wrestle for 7th Place.

@184 Thomas Penola won his first two matches today, before dropping to the 7th/8th Place match.

@197 Andrew Davison fell in the blood round and was eliminated.
@197 Lucas Davison fell 4-3 to Tanner Sloan and is waiting to fact Thomas Lane (who eliminated Andrew) in the consolation semifinal.

@285 Mason Parris dropped a 6-4 decision to Conan Jennings of Northwestern.  Parris got two takedowns in the first minute, but couldn't get out from the bottom in the 2nd or 3rd periods.  He gave up a stalling point in the 3rd, thentwo back points in the last minute and a riding time for the final 6-4 score.  He now gets a rematch with Matt Stencel of Central Michigan.  Stencel is ranked in the top 20 and was an NCAA qualifier last year. Parris won by fall over Stencel (:14) in the Championship of the Michigan State Open earlier this year.

Looks like Paul konrath beat highly ranked Tariq Wilson. Wilson was third last year and took national champ Seth Gross to the brink

I saw that as well, big win. Unfortunately, it was Paul's only win on the weekend. Does this mean Konrath is the starter at 133 ahead of Pepple or is Pepple at another weight or injured?

Mason gets pinned in 30 seconds...

When was the last time he was pinned? Tough loss.

Same guy he pinned in :14 earlier this year.  Didn't see today's match, but the first match they both locked up top and Mason won with a throw to his back  Could today have been the same and this time Mason got got?

His two losses were to ranked wrestlers as well.  Chas Tucker (Cornell) is 13th/14th and Cam Syorka (North Dakota St) is #19/#16.  His loss on Saturday was to Gary Wayne Harding (North Carolina) formerly of Oklahoma State, where he was an NCAA Qualifier in 2015 and 2016.  Not sure what's up with him being at North Carolina.  Don't have any results from this year.  May see him in the rankings soon if he just became eligible.

Three tough opponents for Paul and results not up to his liking I'm sure, but these are good tests for him to let him know where he needs to be when it is time for the Big Ten and NCAA.

Midlands - final

@174 Ben Harvey finished in 8th Place MFF'ing in the placement match.  He had lost 8-5 to Andrew Morgan of Campbell to drop to the 7th Place match.

@184 Thomas Penola dropped his final two matches to finish in 8th Place.

@197 Lucas Davison avenged his brother's loss to Thomas Lane of Cal Poly and is awaiting his 3rd/4th Place match against Army's Rocco Caywood.  Ironically, Caywood knocked Andrew out of the championship bracket yesterday.

@285 Mason Parris lost the consolation semifinal by fall to Matt Stencel of Central Michigan.  He finished in 5th Place after receiving a MFF from #2 seed from Jere Heino of Campbell - unattached.

Southern Scuffle Jan 1-2 from Chattanooga
Hoosiers wrestling in the Scuffle:

Penn State - Nick Lee 141
Chattanooga - Connor Tolley 285
Gardner Webb - Blake Mulkey 141

Duke is there with a full compliment of wrestlers but no Jeremiah Reitz or Ty Mills.  Can anyone give an update on either of these two?  I'm not finding any results on either.  Since this tournament allows multiple wrestlers from the same school (unattached or attached), I was hoping we'd see them.

Did I miss anyone?

Early Scuffle results:

Nick Lee the #1 seed drew a pigtail match and won by 2nd period fall over Julian Flores of Drexel.  He was ahead 9-2 at the time of the fall.  In the Round of 32, he won by Major decision 15-4 over Carmine Ciotti of Edinboro.  His main competition appears to be Oklahoma State's Kaid Brock.

Blake Mulkey drew Kaid Brock in the Round of 32 and fell by Major 13-5.  In the consolation round, Mulkey fell 8-0 to Julian Flores and is eliminated.

Connor Tolley gets a 3-2 decision win over Jarrod Snyder of Cal State Bakersfield.

Round of 16

@141 Nick Lee wins by Major over Aiden Murphy of Chattanooga...

The evening session of Day 1 at the Southern Scuffle has begun.

Nick Lee has a tough match against 2x Pennsylvania State Champion Cole Matthews but squeezes out a major 11-3.  Matthews did everything he could to avoid being taken down the last minute of the 3rd period and got hit with his 2nd stalling call with :04 left to make it 10-3 Lee.  The riding time point gave him the major.  It would have been his first match this season not scoring bonus points.

Kaid Brock of OSU MFF'd in the round of 16.  Lee will face Kyle Shoop of Loch Haven in the semifinal and either Real Woods of Stanford or Nicholas Gil of Navy in the final. Both of those matches will be tomorrow.

Nick Lee starting now.

18-4, Nick Lee with the major -- complete domination from his feet and while on top.  Downside was he was ridden for 2 minutes in the 2nd but he worked the entire time.  Fun wrestler to watch.

Shoop is a 2x NCAA Qualifier.  Lee had TF'd him last year.  The 2 minute ride cost Nick a TF this time.

Lee will face Stanford's Real Woods in the final.  Woods, a freshman was the Illinois 3A State Champ at 132 last year and beat Graham Rooks 5-1 in the IN/IL All-Star Classic.  Woods was a 3X Illinois State Champ with a 2nd Place finish his sophomore year.  From what I can tell, this is only Woods 2nd tournament of the season (no duals).  He won the Princeton Open beating Purdue's Nate Limmex 4-0, for the title.  He was ranked #2 at 132 in Flo's final HS rankings last year.  Should be a good test for both.

Looks like Penn State will only get wrestlers in the finals in 7 of the 10 weight classes, though they will likely have both finalists in two weight classes, 157 and 285.

Check that, Nick Nevills lost his semifinal at 285 so no all-PSU final there.  That will pretty much solidify Anthony Cassar as their 285 going forward barring injury.
