Maybe because Indiana is full of big healthy corn fed boys and North Dakota is not... Maybe???? Seriously, our team leaders are doing a much better job filling teams this year. I went to Fargo camp yesterday and was amazed by the numbers. I was told we actually have to take a third bus! Freestyle is growing once more in our state. As it grows, we will once again be able to fill these teams. Just seems we are pulling out of a dark time for freestyle In our state’s wrestling history. With that said, people get in this board a question “Why can’t we fill this or that spot?” Hell... if it bothers you that bad that you have to get on a forum to talk about it.... step up and help find kids. If we as a community all got the word out about the open spots... we would have a better shot of filling these teams. Fabio Jr.
It's beating a dead horse at this point about the whys of filling these teams is difficult. Overall you are right Freestyle is growing and hopefully we make the changes necessary to boost it even more and find ways to increase the overall ability of our freestyle wrestlers. I see a lot of our top guys struggle with some freestyle concepts that they just don't know. Its not an issue of ability or lack of coaching just a lack of having that kind of mat awareness. I know that next year I expect to have a large youth push of freestyle at the burg. I had a good little group this year but the one issue they had was that the amount of practice we got in the short time was not conducive to helping them grow as freestyle wrestlers. My thought is to rid ourselves of the club/academy qualifiers and have those be 2hr clinics where we go over high level and beginner freestyle Technique. I would be more than willing to host and take responsibility for the newbies and have someone who is much greater than I show some higher level strategy and technique to our studs (guys like Angel, or Coach Ersland, Brandon Wright, Deondre, guys who competed at that intense level) We will get there I have no doubt we are on an upswing and for that I am happy but we will have some growing pains. Im sure someone will eat me up on something I said but ehh its my 2 cents which are worth way less than even that.

Not to drive to far off topic, but I’ve been a big advocate of moving the freestyle season including state back a few week or even more. Or dare I say it, ending the youth folkstyle a couple weeks earlier. Currently for many wrestlers trying freestyle it feels like they are just starting to understand the rules/techniques right when state occurs. Most definitely are not good at them by state and end up not confident in them enough to use the techniques at state, they use them with minimal success, or they backfire and it cost them points/position. That’s not encouging many to keep trying it. I’m going to even guess many wrestlers still don’t bother doing freestyle because of past experiences with the season getting over quickly and not ever having a chance to get comfortable with the style. Give the coaches a few more weeks after folkstyle finishes to transition to freestyle to help the wrestlers learn and develop freestyle techniques instead of rush into the season and wrap it up in a short time period. With a few more weeks of practice and getting comfortable they then have time to put those techniques to the test and refine them on several weekend meets before state occurs. If you’ve cleaned thing up by state you are more willing to try the techniques and have a better chance at being successful with them. It’s a lot easier to invest your time and effort into something when you are given time to clean the technique up so it work right in a match. And yes yes I would be fine with a clinic type event counting as one of the two required competition if they trained freestyle specific techniques for half of the time and then offered live wrestled marches for the other half.
