Evansville North Regional Re-cap

hook and half

Revenge, domination and thrilling finales punctuated the Evansville North Regional.  Let’s get to work!

106- Heritage Hills’ Sam Scott is no longer off the radar.  The salty scrambler gave Mater Dei’s Cole Ross all he wanted plus some.  Ross was able to score a last-second escape to win, 8-7.

113- Mater Dei’s freshman phenom Blake Boarman ran his season record to 30-0 and recorded his third win, in dominating fashion, over Castle’s Devon Casebolt.   Boarman scored an early takedown and stayed on the accelerator, winning 9-0.

120- Mater Dei’s Kane Egli survived an upset bid in the semifinal.  In a sectional final redux, Egli beat Central’s Cameron Amento 10-2 for his second regional title.

126- Not to be outdone by little brother, Clay Egli scored a 3-2 title win over Castle’s Carson Willis.  A cat and mouse match, Willis went for a throw that Egli turned into “two”.

132- Another replay of the sectional final where Mater Dei’s Eli Dickens ran past Central’s Brayden Bethe, 13-4, to collect regional title number two.

138- Mater Dei Sophomore Matt Lee held off a feisty Matt Kincaid to win 6-4 and claim his second regional title.

145- Freshman Scott Fitts scored a third period takedown to make it 7-in-a-row for the ‘Cats.  That was his third win of the season over Castle’s Jacob Freeman.

152- Few in the building had a tougher road to the top of the podium than Castle’s Robert Deters.  The sophomore had to fend off North Posey’s Levi Miller, in double overtime, in order to advance to the final and face Mater Dei’s Macartney Parkinson.  In an exciting chess match, Deters made an escape stand up for a 1-0 victory.

160- Gibson Southern’s Clay Singleton sloughed off his sectional loss to Mater Dei’s Nolan Weidner and earned a 6-4 victory.

170- North Posey’s Colton Gamblin continued to impress, registering two 6-0 wins and a pin en route to his title march over county rival, Mt Vernon’s Luke McGennis.

182- It looked like Castle’s Will Nunn was going to end Central’s Kiave Guerrier’s unbeaten season.  Nunn kept the match close and scored at the end of regulation to send it to overtime.    Appearing to be gassed, Guerrier came off the hash mark like a scalded cat and scored the winning takedown three seconds into the extra stanza.

195- The thrills kept coming as Castle’s Will Rolley and Reitz’s Andrew Koonce squared off.  Down 4-2 in the second, Koonce landed a throw, put Rolley to his back…pin!  Boom went the dynamite.

220- Mater Dei’s Michael Boots registered a first period ankle pick over Memorial’s Alex Lichlyter and never looked back, cruising to a 5-2 win.

285- Vincennes’ Spencer York and Mater Dei’s Roman Graves reprised their sectional final in thrilling fashion.  In overtime Graves got in on a shot and TWO…no--York gets around and is awarded the takedown.  Great match; I would like another look at the last sequence.

Mater Dei scored 229 points while Castle was second with 136.5

I called out Sam Scott as someone to watch at the beginning of the season. He has honed his skills and is going to be a good match for anyone in front of him.

Boarman is unreal and fun to watch

Levi taking 3rd is going to be a headache for some 2 seed come next Saturday.

While Guerrier got caught goofing around late and was forced into an OT, there was definitely no low gaslight on in this guy.

I personally liked the taunting between Castle and EMD. First it was Egli showing the hush sign to the Castle bench after a tough match with Willis. Then motto be outdone, Deters gives the Hulk Hogan hand over the ear to the EMD guys after his win over Parkinson. Two very tough teams going at it.
