Summer Dual opportunities

Recommended Posts

It's no secret that in order to be a great wrestler, you must put work in during the offseason. With all of the exciting tournaments during the summer, comes a cost, however. While a lot of teams hold fundraisers, get sponsors, or some other type of funding, individual funding is hard on some kids to go to some of these national tournaments. So, I was wondering what teams are doing hosting some duals and such during the summer. I know Fargo and Junior Duals are very expensive, but it'd be great to see some of Indiana's next compete and get exposure. I know last summer, Columbus East hosted a super dual with Perry Meridian, Edgewood, and some other team I believe. I saw some fun and competitive matches that feel like they would've been more dominant during the IHSAA season, namely Graham Rooks' 14-10 decision versus PM's Davie Clayton. It was a great match and both teams were into EVERY dual. It was meant to be held outside but due to weather, it was held inside. Hopefully, this year we can see the event again with more teams involved and it being held outside this time. I think it would be great for Indiana wrestling. Also, for those wanting to get into other styles, Warren was trying to set up a triple dual for freestyle last year, but I'm not sure it went as planned. Hopefully, we can see that come to life this year as well. Some Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling really improves your skills, and dual meets would also potentially make it more appealing to younger kids.

Coach Pendoski at Carmel and Coach Joll/Davison at Chesterton a few years ago really pioneered the idea of Freestyle Duals. People are hesitant to go to local freestyle open tournaments because of the numbers are lacking. Duals guarantees you matches... Last year at Carmel's Freestyle Duals teams like Greenfield Central, Zionsville, Carmel, Evansville Mater Dei, Chesterton, Garrett, and Coach Hull got a group of kids that train at his club to make a team.... it was great... kids got 5 matches in about 4 hours!

Roncalli is going to support and really push freestyle attendance at open tournaments with our club kids. We are also going to host a Freestyle Duals Meet on Sunday, April 23rd... we are hoping we can have some success with this event and really help grow Freestyle wrestling in Indiana....

Perry Meridian is having a freestyle/Greco tournament April 8th and Freestyle Dual April 9th. This will be an easy way to get your two qualifying freestyle tournaments in one weekend. This will be good for the kids going to national tournaments and spring break. It is for Schoolboy-Junior 91,98, then HS weights. If interested let me know. Only a few spots left.

If I remember correctly Carmel had the All World Championship! That was a good time! Great coaches!!!

Yes, I think Coach P was working on getting the tournament name coined with the UWW and last I heard he had a meeting with the United Nations.... World Champions were crowned and young mens' lives were changed forever!
