Crazy Parents

I love it when some parent complains about the "Big Shot" from Ohio.  I let them go on awhile and then I say, "Are you aware that he offciiated at the Olympics?"  Normally that shuts them up, but I did have one person say, "Well, he should stay at the Olympics."  I have never had anyone say it, but I think a good comeback to my Olympics question would be...."What did he officiate.......curling?"

No one likes that Ohio Guy all he does is send snail mail to urban and make jokes at the expense of the the vertically challenged  coaches in the state. :P

Btw...I was thinking about you just the other day. I had to change the password on my laptop so I tried to change it to Nick Weisjahn and I got an error message that said "password too short"????

And Notre Dame fans...

I despise the Big Shot from Ohio, wait though isn't he in that Youtube Video???

That really hurts my feelings. I'm very sensitive. I do understand, though. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through life as a Bear and ND fan. It must make fall weekends very traumatic.

I'm not saying wrestlers should hit fans but i can say I don't regret my actions. The guy had it coming, as soon as he put his hands on me he knew he was going to have to call in sick on Monday.

I had a dad attack my team mate at a freestyle tournament at Beech Grove in 03'...I was recovering from a surgery and was virtually useless..my buddy beat this kid in a very bk and forth match in which the kid was head butting my team mate and it escalated into a rough match..The Huge dad comes barreling on the mat shoving my buddy in the back HARD with a clubbing axe handle causing dang near whip lash ..I swung my back pack like a granny fighting off a robbery while I have 30 stapleseconds in my stomach..Jerry Ingles the official that day Threw the maniac out...

I thought for sure the guy would be waiting in the parking lot...Fast forward a year later at bankers life and I see that guy again at state where unbelievably his son got 4th and I know he recognized me in the hall and just gave me the dirtiest look EVER...if somebody hits me I too would defend myself but Idk why it escalated to that...just my 2 pennies

Earlier this year I was officiating a match and wrestler had a kid in a headlock. When it turned potentially dangerous I stopped the match and gave the wrestler his 3 points. The coach called me to the table and I pointed out that it had turned potentially dangerous he said that he agreed with the call TOTALLY!   But that if he did not call me to the table then he would have to deal with a mother up in the stands. I asked him if I should just stand there for a minute then shake my head NO! He said absolutely that would work, but as I went back to continue the match I could not stop laughing.

A dual meet several decades ago was held at a school that had the spotlight over the mat, and all other gym lights turned off - it was a cool environment. The match was intense and not going the way of the home team. The fans were intense and were particularly not happy with the referee that night. In between matches, as the official stood on the mat alone, coins were being thrown from up in the stands down at him and he even got struck by a couple but he laughed it off. Later several fans threatened that they would meet him outside after the match. He got an escort outside from the school AD and I don't think he ever agreed to officiate there again

The best is when this gets escalated because of the coach. I used to officiate and I had one similar to yours 15 years ago where the home team was getting drubbed by a top 10 team. They were finally winning a match and their kid puts his guy on his back in a near side cradle but arches too far back and pancakes flat on his own back. The defensive kid isn't close to being pinned and I look right at the offensive kid's back and call the defensive fall, but nobody realizes what's going on and are going berserk thinking they've won. I raise the defensive kid's hand and the coach and fans are beside themselves. The ex-college wrestler coach of this decent high school program goes ballistic insisting it's impossible for an offensive guy to get pinned. The fans take cues from him and are almost on the mat shouting very friendly comments. The AD can barely look me in the eye after the match because he's sure his coach is right too and I had to wait around to leave the school because of the things the parents were shouting as I headed back to the locker room after the dual. The coach fortunately got on a message board right away to ask about the situation and everyone clued him in--and I got an "I guess you were right" down the road when I saw his team again. Fun stuff.

I have done that before usually with young kids at off season stuff...I normally tell the offical you're fine I'm just trying to get this parent to shut it lol

While at a large out of state tournament that was halfway through the duals format, I walked past a large man screaming at his two boys. It was in the middle of a crowded hallway.

I tried to ignore him but could not help but hear him.

He was calling his two boys the P-word (plural form) for not winning a single match between them.

Not sure how this was supposed to encourage them.

Crazy dads often do more harm than good.

I was at a tournament a few years ago in southern Indiana and my son had a very similar situation. He was being beaten pretty handedly but the offensive guy wasn't able to turn him. In an effort to do so, the offensive guy rolled my son - but my son ended up on top and his opponents shoulder blades were flat on the mat. My son wasn't turned in, but he was on top, looking up and being held by the other guy, while the other guy was literally laying flat on his back. Whether or not it qualified as a defensive pin or not, I am not exactly sure. But when I said to my wife beside me that it looks like a defensive pin, apparently the other dad heard and started yelling at me that there was no such thing. I told him there absolutely is, but that I wasn't even talking to him - I was talking to my wife. He started yelling obscenities, etc. I got a little heated as well - but kept my cool. His son beat my son, and he acted like it was a state championship. My son didn't even get out of sectional that year...so he wasn't beating some highly touted guy.

Those are the same type of parents that try to teach their kids wrestling moves and they never wrestled..I literally had a guy furiously yell at his son to hit a PETERMAN lol...and when his son lost was grilling him hardcore..I told the guy there's no such thing it's a PETERSON and he wasn't having it....he said during his week of 6th grade wrestling that was his go to move...yea a whole week and this genius had a "go to" move

Never thought of the parent on parent crazy angle...

I was in Iowa and they let you volunteer and in turn you get a floor pass/free admission and since I'm not a coach thought that would be cool since they try to get you on your kids mat as table help. Well I can hit a ref with a towel with the best of them so I stepped up. Sure enough, as inevitably happens, the dad of the kid LilJimmy is gonna wrestle is working the clock. He's looking at Track trying to stalk LilJimmy and I'm overhearing EVERYTHING he's saying about him...this kids' from IN, didn't even make his state tourney (LilJimmy was JV freshman year) among others. I just kinda stay quiet..for now...as I have also done my homework and his kid was a state placer in Class 27A in Iowa or something. So I'm shutting my mouth figuring LilJimmy is gonna get pounded. LiLJimmy throttles this dad's snowflake 7-0 and this dude starts going off on his kid and leaves his workstation to administer an arse chewing! When he came back I slowly started dropping subtle jabs about the quality of the talent in Iowa and how it must be down this year cuz IN tomato cans are beating IA placers. He finally made the connection and at break he went to a different mat to work..the losers bracket mat!

TL;DR..be careful what you say, you never know who you're next to.

It's pitiful really..takes the fun out of the sport for many when this happens..they'd a difference in wanting the best for your kid but when you're trying to instil bad habits, that's where the line gets crossed..teaching kids how to wrestle is hard enough, the kids don't need bad habits that need broken..

Back when I flopped around on the mat for a certain HS in #TheCounty (not named Brownsburg), we were wrestling at the '93 or '94 Mid-State Conference meet in Mooresville.  A head coach (from a school where a really big IndyCar Racetrack exists) had his son wrestling in the championship and lost on a last second score.  The coach got so mad that he picked up his coaches folding chair and threw it as far as he could across the gym, ala Bobby Knight on steroids.  As I watched the chair fly over my head it landed on a poor wrestler who was taking a nap in the bleachers and had to injury default his final match.  Luckily, a couple of Dad's escorted the coach outside until the cops came.  Never sure what happened to him, but he wasn't around for the rest of that season.
