Where is Caliboy when you need him?

Not sure if this was directed at me? No caliboy here pal. All I'm saying is that Mike may have good reason to have doubt that my wrestler may come up short, and that he is willing to work hard to try to get better.

And Mrs. Larson was just sharing her opinion (openly and non-anonymously). I assure you that she is one of the nicest people that I have ever been around, and doesn't deserve that comment either (if you were referring to her).

And Mike disagrees, and has presented his supporting comments (which make sense). See this is how this all works.

Not sure how your comments fit into this thread.

So brewer beat a zionsville kid who beat Mappes and that's your criteria but Lawson pinning Robert who beat the guy who knock ripple out doesn't matter in this opinion question. Ok

I thought it was all about this year? I thought Ripple was unbeaten? The other matches talked about were this year. My mistake, I did not go back in years to see who beat who. I only looked at this years results.

15 Gabe Smith (Lawrence Central) 21-3, So

1 Zeke Escalera (Union County) 22-0, 8th.   I don't think Smith could major Rioux from Avon like Zeke did.  MD 3-0

6 Hunter Watts (Jimtown) 20-1, So.

1 Asa Garcia (Avon) 19-0, So.  Can't go against a state champ MD 6-0

6 Tylor Triana (Hobart) 14-2

14 Eli Dickens (Evansville Mater Dei) 13-1, Fr  Due to Dickens already beating Triana this year MD 9-0

4 Graham Rooks (Columbus East) 23-0, Jr.  Rooks is a beast...this is a tough matchup though MD 9-3

5 Alec White (New Palestine) 17-0, Sr.

UR Conner Gimson (Jimtown) 21-0,

6 Kyle Luigs (Evansville Mater Dei) 16-0, Sr.  Luigs by major MD 13-3

3 Kris Rumph (Portage) 18-2, Jr.

1 Bryce Sheffer (Union County) 27-0, Sr.  Tough call here but Sheffer is a 2 time state champ... MD 16-3

2 Kasper McIntosh (Portage) 19-1, Jr.   Kasper by major MD 16-7

? Chance Oxford (Union County) 27-1, Sr.

4 Kyle Hatch (Warsaw Community) 28-0, Sr.

1 Joe Lee (Evansville Mater Dei) 14-0, Jr  Lee is probably the only person who can beat Hatch this year MD 19-7

9 Gleason Mappes (Center Grove) 19-1, Jr.  TOSS-UP 1 point match here...going with Mappes (two young guns here) MD 19-10

5 Carson Brewer (Avon) 19-1, So.

UR Thomas Penola (Zionsville) 20-1, Jr.

1 Burk Vanhorn (Franklin Community ) 14-0, Sr   VanHorn will be state champ at 160/170 MD 23-10

3 Lucas Davison (Chesterton) 20-0, Jr.  Sonner is tough but Davison wins by 1 MD 23-13

7 Jaden Sonner (New Albany ) 27-0, Jr.

2 Andrew Davison (Chesterton) 20-0, Sr.   Davison by major MD 23-17

4 Kurtis Wilderman (Evansville Mater Dei) 10-1, Sr.

9 Eli Pokorney (Chesterton) 20-1, So.

2 Gunnar Larson (Avon) 20-0, Sr.   This match already happened this year MD 26-17

10 Jessie Lawson (Carroll (Ft Wayne)) 27-2, Sr.  I think Ripple will win this match-up BUT Lawson just pinned two studs yesterday! MD wins 26-20

4 Wade Ripple (Mt Vernon) 24-0, Sr.

With several wings match-ups Al Smith could win...or Mater Dei could win by more or less.  Many variables....

This is STRICTLY CHAMP VERSUS CHAMP

The Al Smith is the best and deepest tournament in Indiana...no doubt about that.  As a southerner, I am very impressed with the quality and wish the Mater Dei classic would build up to that!  But, champ vs champ, I will go with Mater Dei.  The Dickens upset over Triana definitely helps Mater Dei winners in the team score.

Only a couple amendments:

120: The guys at this weight class are just so close...so many close matches already.  It's true Dickens owns a win over Triana, but he also got pinned by Bealmear who Triana pinned.  Triana's also lost to Poynter, but yesterday he beat #2 Mejia and #4 Rooks, who beat Poynter.  I would pick Triana over Dickens by a very close score in a re-match, but I think it could be 5-5 if they wrestled 10 times.

132: None of us realized until yesterday how good Gimson is.  He pins #5, beats #4...then gets majored by #6 as you suggest?  No way.  Sophomore year is often the biggest jump and he's an undefeated breakout sophomore that we just misunderstood before.  I would pick Luigs based on his dominating performance yesterday, but there's no way he wins by more than a couple points.  For reference's sake for you E-ville semi-state watchers, so we can re-calibrate how we think of Gimson, who will be ranked in the 3-5 range now: Tolin up at 132 beats 138 #5 Nathan Conley.  Gimson pins Tolin and backs it up with a win over state placer Combest (you remember him, right?  put out Reitz's Craig and topped Dilbeck at semi-state last year).  Gimson is for real.

I think Triana beats Dickens the next five times they wrestle. But the fact is dickens won their only matchup this year. So you have to pick dickens over him.

Luigs beats grimson 9 out of 10 times. I can see him majoring or decision win.

As a point of clarification, Bealmear wrestled up a weight class against Hobart that day.  Triana pinned another of Castle's 120lbers.

Great write up Navy. Just for clarification, Sheffer is a 3x state champ. BUT only a 1x winner at the EMD tourney which was this year.

Ran into the buzz saw named Chad Red two times in a row in the finals.

Edit: I stand corrected (lost to Duncan instead of Red one time)

He didn't Make it to Red last year

He didn't Make it to Red last year

I went with rumph @38 he was still wrestling at super 32 when Schaffer was out also Paul konrath was also out. Both beat conley by similar scores. 7-1 and 8-2.

Ok, thanks. It's wrong in the individual results data then.

Just playing devil's advocate...Sheffer just majored Sellmer while Rumph eked out the 3-2ot result. But Rumph seems to wrestle up and down to the competition a bit score-wise. Whatever the case, it would be a good one.

That is a good point. I do think that is a even match up. Much like i felt rumph was a match up problem for molloy last year. I think sellmer is very much in that same boat. If your your strength is on your feet sellmer will be in most of those matches

Where did sellmer wrestle sheffer? His 2 losses would be rumph and kraeszig?

Sellmer has now split with kraeszig

Only once and he got pinned in less than a minute. The year before he lost in the semi to Keegan Duncan(Tr). The other time(2013) he made the final, he lost to DJ Smith

Sheffer is tough as nails. I think that shows how tough the classic is. This is a straight opinion topic I would guess only only a handful of theses matches we would really know what would happen. I was disappointed to see the amount of forfeits at the classic this year

I agree. I feel that there were a lot of sick ones. Kudos to those such as Avon who through having several starters out, still brought some hammers to help fill those brackets. Having lost Memorial and the team from Tennessee, sure didn't help. Still not sure why Memorial dropped out. I know they usually put up some good wrestlers, yet come out banged up. This year, they're loaded with a senior class and doesn't want anyone injured going into the state series?

Don't pick Brewer, he barely won EMDC , he was healthy as an Ox, don't believe his dad. That win vs. Zionsville was close one. He has a lot of work to do still, this is his Freshman year . He's small . Indiana DONT PICK THIS KID TO WIN A STATE TITLE .

Memorial may have dropped

Out of the Classic because of their invite to

Team State. They host two tourneys so they couldn't give those up, not sure what they else they would have gave up to go to Team State

Sorry...on a roll. Kraeszig beats Sellmer and it's him who gets majored by Sheffer.
