Yikes. Seems to be a lot of FF's considering it's an in state tourney? Is this the norm?

Just looking at last years results, Gold team only had one FF, and the blue team had 5 on the Greco side. I didnt see any post trying to fill spots for the Greco team.

Ok, I'll ask since it's been kinda boring around here lately...is this yet another indictment of the success of the ISWA 2 tourney mandate rule? I don't think 10 combined FF's for your top 2 state teams at a national tourney in your home state shows a growth in the styles, which I believe was one of the two outcomes that was hoped to be achieved.

I don't think it's luck whether they win or lose, at this level it takes more skill than luck.

It might take some luck when you have that many forfeits.

That looks like Blue won....unless im crazy

Yes, I misread, I'm trying to work and look at results at the same time.

I could only wonder how much better both Indiana teams would have been if there was a better selection process.  The host state should not have any FF's and they also shouldn't have any problems getting the best kids at every weight to wrestle.  Definitely need a new system.

I wonder how many Indiana All Americans will be crowned at USA Nationals in schoolboy division that were not allowed in this event.

Maybe 1-5. Jesse for sure. But the caliber of competition at schoolboy duals was no joke. The kids who competed wrestled their butts off. Forfeits killed them. They are killing the cadet teams as well. Regardless of what anyone thinks, we need to get better at freestyle and Greco as a state. If that means getting qualifiers in, so be it. If not, we need to scrap it all together on duals, and the kids who truly love it, train it, can turn focus on Fargo/kids nationals and invest in those kids. We can't embarrass ourselves much longer as a state with these incomplete dual teams. There are many variables to address to fix it, but filling the spots themselves has nothing to do with qualifiers. There were plenty of able bodies to fill the spots. Head coaches are not doing their jobs, clubs are not stepping up, kids are not stepping up to represent our state.

There are so many factors that can deter kids from making some of the trips. Cost, location and shortened summer breaks all play a part in a kids choice, not including competing against other sports, baseball games and football camps going on plus the fact that freestyle and Greco seem to be dying in Indiana. Let's look at a choice between your high school team going to Disney versus the Jr Team Indiana going Oklahoma. Most are going to choose Disney with their friends and high school teammates over Oklahoma. I know I would. If the family chooses to go to Disney they can extend it a few days and enjoy vacation as well.

The freestyle season in Indiana has taken a backseat to national folkstyle tournaments, whether individual or team. We did our 2 qualifiers and wrestled a total of 3 times spending $30 for entry fees, plus gas, food and gate fees driving over 200+ miles. In my mind the cost versus the reward wasn't worth the money, then we get to state and spend $35 plus all the above mentioned fees to not wrestle at all. It had been a few years since we had wrestled much freestyle so with the vast experience we gained in the 3 tournaments that we wrestled in(sarcasm) and the cost of team Indiana we opted to go to the Va Beach tournamnent, hit several local folkstyle summer duals with our high school team, will wrestle at the Grand River Rumble coming up in July plus camp at the end of June and spend just a little more than the cost of team Indiana. Kind of an easy decision in my house.

Meanwhile, our national teams have forfeits AND are outclassed.  Prominent college coach, USAW coach and former World and Olympic Champion told me at UWW Junior World Team Trials not too long ago that, "IF we aren't careful and continue to go down this path, with our famed one-class State Championship, Indiana wrestling will become irrelevant."   Ouch.....

Good stuff....couldn't agree more! ISWA doesn't cater to the customer! They rather argue, tell us to go to a meeting and rip people when they make suggestions. ISWA works great if you are 15-30 minutes from Indy! But even Indy was a huge show at Disney. It's almost a waste talking about it, because they have their "click" and we the customer have to prove our worth to them to have any merit in their conversations! You cannot tell me that all the drama with the ISWA (mostly the last 2 years) isn't having an impact on numbers both in state and national competition! I know 4 Champs in Freestyle from 2014 that haven't wrestled freestyle since.

Ya, because we changed it to single class over the last few years. I disagree. Mainly because of technology. You can in 5 minutes look up a kid and see how they measure up if they go to National tournaments. Track has changed a lot of that, how would they measure up questions. You don't have to be at those tournaments or know someone that was to get that information now!

I watched a lot of Indiana kids that were not state qualifiers beating up on state placers and Champs from other states all week long!

Coach,

I couldn't agree more about the forfeits, that is very fraustrating! But I do not believe that we were outclassed in the slightest. I may have read this wrong and I apologize if I did. However, as a parent and fan that drove to York, PA to watch our athletes first hand and the way they battled the best kids in the country, not one of our boys were outclassed. The team members we had wrestled at a very high level and I left there afterwards very impressed with how good our kids are with the limited amount of time spent training for freestyle/Greco. The coaches were spectacular as well. I surely hope no one sits back and thinks we, as Team Indiana were outclassed by anyone or any team there. We fell victim of 4 FF's and medical skin issue which took one of our boys out of competition but the ones that stepped on the mat were and are the cream of the crop.

@Bluemonster - (this isnt a rant towards you)

Forfeits definitely kill us, whether our kids are outclassed or not.  Unfortunately I disagree about us being outclassed though.  I have been fortunate enough to have coached our national teams at every level (Schoolboy, Cadets & Junior Duals, Fargo, All UWW World Team Trials, IHSAA State Finals, etc) and we are definitely behind the curve VERSUS the top states in regards to CONSISTENCY. That I believe is one of the main differences between my position versus most other coaches here in Indiana:  I am measuring us against the top states in the country, not just every state in the country, collectively and individually.  We beat who we are supposed to beat and lose to who we are supposed to lose to, forfeits or not.  But forfeits definitely kill any teams chances of winning it all, except Griffith of course. Things may have changed since I have coached these teams but not much.  If the current national results are indicative of where we are at as a state, we are on the wrong track in the eyes of the top college programs in the country.  This is a widely respected coach who I am cool with that brought this to me personally.  Yes, he mirrored my thoughts, but I'm still left there to shake my head in shame and try to make excuses for the state.  He didn't care. No one even pops up on their radar if they don't have success in the Olympic styles. Sure, we have a few good individuals on these national teams, but not nearly enough.  Do we consistently All-American at these duals? No.  When was the last time Indiana won a national freestyle/greco dual? When was the last time we were in the finals for that matter? When highly respected Coach X says this to me, and we send x amount of teams to Virginia, Disney, Dells, Iowa and do well, but cant fill a national team?!?!?  Tough convo to be in, but no one hear's that convo from them.  Again, it's been a few years since I coached at the Cadet Duals, so I am not saying this to disrespect our kids, because I know for a fact they wrestle their hardest.......but that still isn't enough.  I didn't see it but our match versus New Jersey Red I imagine was an outclassed issue, not an effort or forfeit issue.  This is just one example of countless that our state is consistently outclassed at the highest level versus the highest caliber competition....in the styles that the top collegiate programs look at.  It is no wonder that Perry Meridian has consistently been one of the best programs in the state, because they consistently MAKE their kids wrestle these styles.  In the words of Snoop Dog, the game is to be sold, not told, and it starts with the coaches.
