States traveled from all over to Iowa this past weekend for Elem and MS duals. Why don't they want to come to the crossroads of America?

Are people that bent out of shape? The Gorillas weren't even the best team from Indiana.  Could the Gold team have been better with a few other guys....sure? But who cares. Give as many kids as possible a chance to wrestle. If they want to wrestle with their friends, let them.  Isn't this sport supposed to be fun?

Doesn't it depend on the "goal" of the tournament?  I honestly don't know what this event is geared toward, but it would seem that with the dual meet setting attempting to find the best team (in this case state) would be the goal.  If that is the case we are hurting our (Indiana's) chances of winning the event by dividing up our talent.  I agree that the goal is that kids should have fun, but isn't winning an aspect of the sport too?  Also the prestige of the event makes a difference.  Its not like this is the Churubusco Open, it seems like a pretty big event.  It really comes down to if we care if we win or not.

The iHSWCA does a great job putting this together for the kids. $200 for CK fight shorts, CK singlet, CK long sleeve, CK gear bag, 2 night hotel stay in a nice hotel, travel to and from and meals for 2 days, and entry fee is a pretty good deal. I think the kids are treated equally as well too. 

Personally, I want to see it go back to the old days.. 2 teams per state only! Then it means something to qualify for the national team. 

I would disagree with the 2 teams. Just 1 one weight class (220) the past 4 years, having 2 teams would have eliminated Kobe Woods, Gunnar Larson and Evan Ellis. I know there are many more examples, but keeping these 3 out does not seem right. All 3 wrestled for the Gorilla's because they were not picked by IHSWCA. All 3 are multiple State Medal winners.

What if...

 

The IHSWCA and IndianaMat cooperate and coordinate to field 3 teams all entered as state association teams sponsored by IndianaMat with the same cost for everyone.  

 

The top 2 teams are based on the normal criteria.  The 3rd team can be chosen by a committee with Joe as chairman.  All 3 teams get the same Gorillas gear (different singlet colors for each team).  Bigger bulk ordering would lower the cost for everyone.

 

The staff of coaches could float to other mats in order to coach their own wrestlers.  It might be necessary to have one head coach or team leader per team that would stay with them for all the duals.  But the rest of the hall of famers and good lookers could help work with everyone.

 

Could this be a solution?

With only six states represented, the focus should be on improving the event instead of worrying about who is on what team.

I would like to point out the success and growth of the Heartland Duals out in Council Bluffs. Fred Franklin is the guy that puts that on. It is truly an amazing event. The organization is incredible. The facilities and competition are second to none. This event has grown into a monster. They had around 30 elementary and 30 middle school teams this year (from many states).

Then you look at two other events that used to be the tops for these age groups (AAU duals in Kingsport and Middle School National Duals in Danville). These two events are in decent locations and venues, but they do not come close to what you get out in Council Bluffs. Like the duals in question, these other events are dying.

The bottom line is that if we stay par for the course and don't continue to improve our events, someone else will put on a bigger better event. Not sure what it is, at the high school level. Perhaps many kids are just waiting to go to the monster that is Virginia Beach Duals? We need to make some changes or our event will continue to dissolve.

 

Triple B.... do you think that we could put on a dual that could be similar to what you were able to witness at the Heartland Duals???? And... Did you make it over to the casino???

My son was lucky and ended up in the silver group. Which means he was able to get 7 matches with out of state kids.  But even the gold group only wrestled 2 Indiana kids which left 5 out of state kids.  I guess what I'm saying is that I have no problem with all the teams.  My son would not have made the top 2-3 teams in the last 2 years, but was able to wrestle at this tournament.  He went 3-4 last year and 6-1 this year, both years he wrestled mostly high ranking state kids and got a lot of experience out of it.  Great tournament and experience for all high school kids.

First off I want to say Thank you to Y2 and Fabio. Without the Gorillas my son might not have gotten a chance to wrestling in this event. I know he had a lot of fun met alot of new friends. Wrestling aside. What I have learned is the kids want to be with there friends and have a fun time. If they can do that and wrestle they will head to that team kids are kids. Granted we did not have 1 dominate team but had a lot of young Indiana wrestlers getting more experience and making them better Vs just a select few. This improves the state as a whole.. just my 2 cents

Nathan Walton didn't want to make 170

Blake Mulkey and Brayton Lee wanted to be on the same team as their teammates(Walton, McCormick, and Mills before injury).

Brendan Black wanted to be with his teammate Triana

 

On top of that Walton, Lee, and Black all enjoyed their time as Gorillas last year. They also don't mind paying less and getting a lot more gear on top of that.

 

I guess when you treat people right they want to come back, it's what happens when you put out a superior product.

It begs the question: the very top kids get to be on an Indiana " sponsored team", coached by HOF staff, yet consistently choose the gorillas. Why?

 

If gold and blue want to have a better team, they should look at what the gorillas are doing.

In talking with Fred Franklin this year he mentioned to me that his event is continually growing and has gotten bigger than he even expected. 

He said over the next few years he has some things in the plans to expand even further and possibly even a location change to a bigger venue to accommodate some of the additions...He has researched and found that the UNI dome is willing to host him which will allow for all teams and divisions (elementary and middle school) to be in same place instead of main arena and side gym.

He also said he has had a lot of interest and pressure from all the states that attend this event for elementary and middle school to begin a High School division as well and he plans to do so !!!!

Can you imagine putting together hammer teams from IN in all three divisions going out to this event and having success.  This tournament is a top notch tournament from start to finish and everyone can benefit from the national level competition that attends this event.

Winning is great. I think the ultimate goal is to get as many kids wrestling in the off season as possible.  If that takes not winning the dual but getting a lot more kids mat time, I'm okay with that.

Our society is just too obsessive about things people want to be exclusive.  Must get into Harvard not for education but because it’s exclusive.  Must stay at the Plaza in NY not because it's comfortable but because it’s exclusive.  Must be on the gold team not for the experience but because it excludes those ‘others.’

 

Yeah, let’s keep that riff-raff out of Harvard or the Plaza or the gold team.

This event has devolved to become a decent regional dual.  Absolutely not a big time, big deal event.  I think some folks believe it is still a big event but it clearly isn't.  Joe posted that only 6 states are represented. That much alone should tell you what you need to know.
