Backyard Brawl: Mishawaka versus Penn

Might be closer then Harper would like it. Penn still will win the thing but Mishawaka isn't bad.

106 Cavanaugh (P) pin Joho (M). 6-0. Not much competition here.

113 Slates (P) tf Denaway (M) 11-0

120 Hildebrandt (P) pin Meeks (M) 17-0. Hildebrandt is way ahead of the field. Two tourney Mvps in two weekends. Too much for the Meeks.

126 Hardesty (M) tf Varner(P) 17-5. Hardesty is tough as nails. And super mean. Love it. Very likely state placer.

132 Risner (M) with the upset dec of Selis(P) 17-8. Risner is probably the most underrated wrestler on the Mishawaka team. Kids pretty dang good.

138 Manspeaker(P) dec Beaver (M). 20-8

145 Hesch (M) pin Beam(P) 20-14. Hesch is back and Beam gets intimidated by physical wrestlers.

152 Prentice(P) dec Kahlenbeck. 23-14. Prentice is so damn quick. You blink and he's scored. Kahlenbeck is mentally tough and will hold his own against anyone.

160 Swank(P) md Sinkovics. 27-14. Swank looks really tough. Probably a top 4 finisher at state this year. Looks like a future DI guy.

170 Hurley(P) dec Becker (M). 30-14. Toss up match but I'll give it to the talented frosh.

182 Faulkner (M) pin Chaffee(P). 30-20. Bunch of Chaffees have wrestled for penn and never win. And Faulkner looks really good right now.

195 Bufford (M) dec Repertt(P). 30-23. Another toss up match. Give the edge to Mish.

220 Woods(P) pin Hess (M). 36-23. Tough for anyone to match up with Woods.

285 Vakalahi(P) dec Faulkner (M). 39-23. Vakalahi is just too good an athlete for him.

Would be interesting to see the senior Hilde move up to wrestle the senior Hardesty.  That would be worth the price of admission alone.  Then again Hardesty cuold move up to be favored over another senior Selis and bump up Risner junior vs. Manspeaker junior would be very close.   Don't think Manspeaker has lost this year and from a solid wrestling family.  Lots of choices for the coaches on this one.  Becker is a senior and looked good last week and Hurley as freshman wrestling varsity could be a good match.  Penn hasn't had Woods wrestle this year, so a jv Penn kid against Hess would be a close match.  And Hess is a former Penn wrestler who transferred to the Cavemen.

Last year Penn bumped up Hildebrandt to wrestle Hardesty and Hildebrandt won 8-1 . Be interesting to see if they bump him again this year . I would also expect Woods to wrestle in this one . Hopefully all of Penn's #1's will be ready to go , something we have not seen this year yet .

3 Penn wrestlers are facing ranked guys from Mishawaka.

Varner vs hardest ranked 10th at state 2nd ss

Beam vs Hesch 13th at state 4th ss

Chaffee vs Faulkner 9th at state 2nd ss

if rankings and opinions mean anything than this would not even close matchup given most of the Penn guys are ranked at state and semi state.

luckily for all of us watching anything can happen and it should be a great dual.

I agree with the predictions except that I think Mishawaka will get wins at 138 and 170. Beaver is a scrapper who went to semi-state last year and Becker is a really strong kid.

I will be there tonight and will post match by match results under a new topic.

Becker is a really strong and should be heavily favored imop. Beaver will also likely win. Wouldn't be surprised to see Cameron be within a pt.

Kahlenbeck doesn't want to go down at all or he will be counting the lights...Prentice is a tilt-master!
