Looks like we had similar thread ideas Gogo. I'll just piggyback off your post to keep it to one thread.

A tough Utah team put a hurt on Team Indiana in the opening round. The team will be battling in the backside of the bracket today to try and rally back to make it to one of the top pools tomorrow, but the multiple FF are definitely going to hamper the teams chances.

Diep with a DQ? Don't recall ever seeing him unsportsmanlike.

Though I'm not super clear on the ever evolving Greco penalty procedures it could be he was DQed from excessive leg fouls or passivity cautions rather than a unsportsmanlike action. Edited by MattM

Missing a couple of results from the Texas match...here is the full score...its too bad Indiana is forfeiting so many weight classes, especially with kids sitting on the bench waiting to wrestle freestyle at weights we are forfeiting for greco. Just doesn't make sense to me.

I do not understand why kids would not take the opportunity to wrestle if there is an open spot.  When I wrestled on Team Indiana during the Mexico trip we wrestled both Greco and Freestyle.  Many of us had never even practiced Greco before.  Dave Maldonado worked with me on my Greco stance right before the tournament.  I think wrestling the different styles makes a well-rounded wrestler.

Hopefully our FS team fares better.

What is happening?  I thought we had this whole selection process now for juniors for team indiana?  Why are there all these forfeits?

The trip costs $700 and it is at the same time as several other big tournaments.  I know of a few of the selected wrestlers that could not do it for those reasons. Those issue would be there regardless of whether the wrestlers qualified by placement at state or were selected.  I imagine that many wrestlers were contacted to fill the open spots and I believe that missing weights were posted on this board so some of those forfeits are probably for last minute reasons.    I agree with the frustration over kids there for Freestyle but sitting for Greco although there are several plausible explanations for that.

The reason that we have these types of teams is our coaches and kids don't take the pride that other states do in this event. Illinois, Minnesota, Oklahoma, etc all go there to win.

We do have a solid freestyle team, however still do not have a heavyweight. I think a 9-16 team finish is realistic for them.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this. Illinois wants to win this every year, and the wrestlers and coaches back them. Indiana wants to be taken seriously on a national level, but we don't want to send the kids to the tournaments that matter.

On that same note, we do not have the depth to compete if a few of our studs have other commitments. When we lose just a couple guys like Lees, Red, Streck, Woods, etc it changes the whole team.

lost to ohio, beat texas finish 5th in pool putting them in in red/blue pool. left thinking done for day only to be called back for one more round beating Michigan should have 3 more tomorrow. this state has become a follkstyle only state, kids and coaches are only looking at state champs and getting a kid to college which is as far as most will go. with Disney and all the other tournments over the summer there is no need for the kids at the bigger schools to wrestle ISWA stuff at all, they can stay busy all summer with there team, and Greco is non existent, Quinn committed at 145 only last week, understand to some degree why kids don't do both, Quinn got hurt in second match, a couple of others where banged up too that were doing both styles. but y2 is right on depth our freestyle team is pretty strong but the drop off at some weights is pretty big. add Konrath Red the Lees and I think we are in the Gold/Silver mix but don't think we win.

Indiana was OK at 126 and 220 as far as depth goes in Freestyle. Both weights went 7-1. 220 went 6-1 in Greco. Woods was hurt and could not wrestle at 220. Rypel is wrestling Florida. Not sure about other top Indiana kids? Out going Seniors are allowed to be on the team as well. In Freestyle Harvey, Holmes and Lydy all went 8-0. Champagne, Larson, Mills, McCormick and Hudkins all went 7-1. Oklahoma, Illinois, Minnesota, New Jersey, Iowa, Utah, Washington, AZ, CA, Missouri, PA, Florida, Michigan, Kansas, Ohio and Colorado all come to win. And most of these states bring a 2nd team to train for the future. The cost of the trip for the Indiana kids compared to these other states is crazy. Illinois pays 300 for example. I could go on and on with what other teams pay compared to Indiana. Cost for an Avon HS wrestler to fly to Disney with the team, room, 3 meals a day was 425 last year. ISWA charged 640 for 1 style. Bus ride for 11 hours each way, room and breakfast was included. What kid and what parents would not send their kid to Disney with their HS team and Coach? With Penn taking a team and an all star team most years, Avon, Bronwsburg, Bloomington South, Perry Meridian, Columbus East and others like a Warren Central next year, the ISWA will have a shortage of wrestlers to choose from. EMD also goes to Jazz Town each year i think. Over all the event is great, The coaching was great. The kids had fun. If ISWA keeps charging what they do and not consulting with the Head Coaches of the High Schools that travel during the summer, it will only get worse. 900 dollars to go to Fargo for 1 style, 2 matches guaranteed. WOW!

Indiana finishes 3rd in the red/blue pool, losing to Iowa's second team. Overall, they placed 19th of 35 teams, although comparing scores across pools suggests they were the 16th best team (but placed lower due to pool and bracketing structures).

The seeding criteria points system used by the organizers almost perfectly predicted who would win every dual. Indiana was in a 3-way tie for 14-16th in "talent" seeding points based on who they brought.  And as I said, their results suggest they were the 16th best team.

They only posted the seeding criteria point totals on Track for each state--not which individual accolades earned those points. If anyone knows the criteria, we could make a guess as to how a better team from Indiana would fare because of how accurately their seeding predicts results.

First of all, I want to say what a great job all of the coaches and the wrestlers did.  It was a long trip, but I thought that Coach Hull, Coach Bradley, and Coach Meyers did a great job and really represented the state of Indiana well.  I am very grateful that my son, Jose Champagne, was selected for the team and was able to represent our state.  I also thought that all of our wrestlers did a fantastic job representing Indiana and wrestled well and had great attitudes.  Coach Ericson also showed up and it was nice to have the additional support.

To the person that asked about Cameron Diep, he was DQ'ed for using his legs.  Cameron wrestled really well and I thought it was a lame call, especially since the other kid was using his legs too.  But Cameron handled himself well and took it in stride.

There were really only two negative things about the trip, and none of those were under the coaches' control.  The first is the number of forfeits for Greco but we also had some for Freestyle due to injuries.  There were a number of kids that were there to wrestle freestyle that could have filled in and also wrestled Greco.  My son and Gunnar Larsen were two that agreed to wrestle both because they wanted to help the team out.  I am sure that the kids that did not want to wrestle Greco had a reason not to, I don't know why, I didn't ask them, but I was disappointed because mat time is mat time.  Jose and Gunnar are not Greco experts, and only a few states actually have awesome Greco teams, so it really wasn't a matter of not knowing what you are doing, because most of the kids didn't appear to know what to do for Greco.  Yes, we ran into a few kids on certain teams at certain weights that knew what they were doing, but the majority of the kids we wrestled weren't Greco all stars.  That being said, I wish a few of the kids had agreed to wrestle Greco and give it a try because it would have made a difference in a few of the duals, but hopefully next year we are able to have a full team.

The number of forfeits can also be helped by high school teams/coaches.  We all know when the Junior Duals take place, so it would be nice and helpful if high school coaches didn't plan any tournaments with their teams during that week.  The ISWA needs the high school coaches' support to help field the best teams.  I think Indiana could have completed with the best teams if we had our best, or even our second best, kids at each weight.  It is difficult to do that when you have kids back out at the last minute, and I know several kids backed out so late that they were either unable to fill the spot or just filled it with anyone that was willing and available to go.  All of our wrestlers, even the ones that were added at the last minute and/or were giving up weight, wrestled really well and had some great matches, so I can only imagine how it would have gone if we had our best kids on the team.  That being said, people who organize other teams and high school coaches need to encourage their studs to go and represent our state at the duals instead of doing all of these other tournaments.

The second thing that is an issue is the money.  It cost about $700 for a bus ride and hotel with breakfast and the gear.  Mr. Larsen and I spoke to several other teams while we were there and by far, Indiana was the most expensive.  Granted, Jose wrestled 15 matches in four days, so he definitely got his matches in, however, it is very expensive compared to other states.  I am hopeful that the ISWA tries to find ways to cut down both these costs and the costs of Fargo.  States like Illinois do fundraisers such as raffle tickets and they also add money to in-state tournament fees to help offset the costs.  Let's hope the ISWA tries to make these trips a little more accessible in the future.  But I will say, having kids drop out at the last second doesn't help - the ISWA was planning on having about 4 or 5 more kids show up, which is almost $3,000.  With those kids dropping out, that is still $3000 they have to cover towards the tournament fees, bus and hotel, so by not having those kids show up, it makes it harder to make the trip more affordable.

Sorry this is so long, but I think that Indiana can definitely compete with the best and I would love to see our state represented on a national level!  Great job to the ISWA and the coaches for making this trip fun for the boys and representing our state!

The cost thing is always something people will bring up. If my math is semi-correct it probably cost about $200 for gear, $125($25 per day) for hotel, and $50 for team entry fee. That means about $300+ went to transportation. That's about $5000 for a week of using a charter bus and it's probably more than that.

When I was on the ISWA board during the exciting and always fun budget meeting they always set aside $X for trip discounts. That means each ISWA sponsored trip got a discount of some sort, some $50, some $200(note numbers are not official). These trips include Cadet, Schoolboy, and Junior duals along with Fargo. I believe there are a couple other trips covered, but don't quote me on this.

In all honesty one of the biggest expenses for a trip past transportation is coaches. In no way will I ever say they should pay their way, but their hotel, transportation, gear, etc is all being paid for by the kids. When you start adding up how many coaches attend Fargo, it tends to take away some of the built in ISWA discount applied to the trip.

One last note on comparing the costs of going to Fargo/Duals vs. Disney or a high school team trip. There is a big difference when we can do things as a team to raise funds such as garage sale, car wash, host tournaments, etc. It is a lot easier to raise funds to make the cost of your team going to Disney as a group than to do it as an individual.

The official write-up is coming....but unofficially much of the this thread is correct.  We do need more of our best guys to show in order to do well but, yes, to compete for the title we need EVERY stud available.  The seeding criteria is a good indicator but it doesn't guarantee anything.  We still have to show up and wrestle.  Illinois had a decent amount of seeding points above Oklahoma but Oklahoma kind of rolled over them in the freestyle finals.  Those early matches are important to summon that spirit and get the ball rolling and that is exactly what happened.

SEEDING:  Our best wrestlers can wrestle with the best wrestlers in the country, but the top ranked states are just deeper.  For example, if we put every Indiana stud in the lineup lets say we get 25 seeding points.  However, you can seed two wrestlers per weight, so not only do the top states have seeds from their starters, the alternates have seeds as well.  That's where you see the 40 and 50 point seeded teams.  Oklahoma had 3 nationally ranked wrestlers at one weight for example.  It's more of a privilege for the them to compete for their team.  The super cool thing is NO FOLKSTYLE criteria is applicable.  Which means every one of those kids got their seeds from either Greco-Roman or Freestyle, the easiest of which is winning a Regional.  Having our best guys in the line-up is essential but bringing those alternates is crucial too because the level of competition can be very tough and keeping guys fresh and healthy is huge.  We tried to do that this year but the only weight class we were able to double up on was 126 with Austin Holmes and Jeremiah Reitz, both of which wrestled well and came out essentially unscathed.

GRECO:  Although we lost the majority of our Greco duals as a team, individually we did relatively well.  We lost to teams that only won one or two matches, but because of the forfeits we just couldn't dig out of the hole.  If we would have at least been able to fill the line-up we would have done much much better.  Even without being greco world champions, Indiana still has some solid wrestlers of course.  We still aren't on the level of using a lot of high scoring moves consistently, like reverse lifts, suplex, etc., but as far a keeping a solid position we were relatively decent.  With regard to putting some of the Freestyle guys in at Greco, we decided it would be better to have our guys fresh for Freestyle instead of getting them banged up.  At a local backyard tournament in Indiana, sure, go both styles.  But this tournament, like Fargo, can be physically and mentally tough to endure and it takes a very special athlete to handle that grind.  We even lost an athlete who was there for Freestyle but got hurt wrestling Greco.  Taking two separate teams is essential.  Big shout out to Gunnar and Jose for stepping up though.  Even if a kid didn't go both, as a staff we weren't holding any grudges because we wanted fresh Freestyle legs.

PRICE:  Indiana, believe it or not is not the most expensive state.  We must also keep in mind that each state is different, has a different set rules, a different culture, etc. Sponsorship and fundraising policies and procedure vary.  Some states use pull tabs which are a great source of raising funds but could be considered gambling.  Others use raffle tickets to help the kids raise money, and there a few which are even performance based.  I will say that we are making additional adjustments on this end, for the Junior Duals in particular, to help make this trip more attractive to our top athletes and their families from a financial standpoint.  But to anyone who thinks that the ISWA is putting making money above providing our kids with the best opportunities is wrong.  We strive to get better across the board and Indiana's success is where our focus is.

BETTER REPRESENTATION:  I am envious of these top states who bring their best kids, year in and out.  It is more of a privilege to them.  We did lose some kids last minute because of their commitment to other tournaments and/or injuries, and it is difficult.  I know it's tough as a H.S. coach looking to build their program to send their best kid to this tournament, especially with Disney and Jazz Town going on around the same time, as well as the financial burden of sending them to Virginia Beach and Las Vegas.  But hopefully we can begin to see that having our best kid represented on that dual team helps our programs out just as much on the back end and gives our other team members something to strive for.  If you are wrestling at this tournament you are hands down wrestling better competition than ANY of those previous mentioned tournaments.  Perfect example, Ty Mills and his father flew from Jazz Town to Oklahoma just to get the best competition because that is how we get better, and his first match was against a nationally ranked state champion.  Not every body can afford to do that, but it just goes to show the importance of being able to participate in an event of this caliber individually, let alone for the pride of representing your state.  Whether they went undefeated or lost every match, every one of our kids got better as result of participating at this tournament.  Mat time is mat time, so as long as you are wrestling year-round you are going to get better.  But when you are wrestling or have success against the best of the best of the best, you get a higher DEGREE of confidence and experience.

I could go on forever about this trip but I do want to take the time to thank USAWrestling for having this event, the ISWA for embracing the Olympic dream and sending these teams, the athletes for coming out and performing, and their families for believing in this tournament and making the sacrifices to make it happen.  It was refreshing having the parents down there with us showing support and doing whatever was needed for our boys (Mama Champagne, Mr. Larsen and Mr. Mills).  Trust we are hungry to get Indiana to the top and working diligently this second to ensure that is the case.  I know personally, myself, as well as the other coaches, have already started planning and planting seeds for next year.  Until we win the whole thing there is no satisfaction. Even then it will only be for a day or so because we have to come back and repeat again, and again, and again.

Sounds good...but until it is free for your A team you will never make this happen. Other states cherry pick kids and offer free rides or highly discounted.

Not sure I totally agree about the best competition out of 11 matches at Disney I saw a lot of state Champs and national ranked kids.
