Open Letter to the ISWA

Dear ISWA Board Members,

The flyer for the Freestyle State Finals states, All participants must compete in a minimum of 2 Local level Freestyle tournaments in order to compete at the State event.”

In looking at the current entries it appears as if some kids who didn’t participate in two local freestyle tournaments are now being allowed to wrestle at state. You are opening a can of worms that will leave a big black eye on your organization if these kids are allowed to wrestle. You told people that, jobs WERE NOT an excuse, national events WERE NOT an excuse, Grandma Betty’s birthday WAS NOT an excuse, spring break WAS NOT an excuse, participating in baseball or track WAS NOT an excuse, and so on. The only viable reason that should be allowed is an injury that is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

Now it is time to step up and follow the rules you set forth for your membership. How the organization responds to this will affect the future more than you can imagine. If you set rules and allow people to get around them you will create a chaotic atmosphere that will not look good upon the organization.

Thank you

This should be fun....

Based on previous comments in another thread, you'll need to call or email them!!! Or better yet, have it announced this weekend at the event while the gym is loud and no one is paying attention....or MAIL it to the local clubs via USPS so they can pass it on to them! These were all various ways that word about the mandate was released from what I recall in the earlier thread, so expecting a reply on wrestling blog might be asking a lot!

I could not agree more.  Sadly, we live in a litigious society.  I hope for the sake of everyone, the issue is addressed prior to the tournament by removing unqualified wrestlers proactively.  Once this weekend happens, the toothpaste is out of the tube and there will be no putting it back in.  Only a mess to try to clean up.

He will probably have to hand deliver it at one of their monthly meetings, but first purchase a membership and show up to at least 2 meetings before he is allowed to talk.

I was just forwarded this from our club director, sounds like you didn't have to go to two events after all.

Not good ISWA, NOT GOOD!

I know of kids that skipped out on going to USAW Folkstyle Nationals to get a tournament in

I know of kids that drove 2 hours to pay and weigh-in to get a tournament in

I know of kids that were legitimately injured and not even cleared medically that paid and weighed in to get a tournament in

NOW all of a sudden they allow people to petition in???

Guys so it seems like everyone cries of injustice on the two qualifier requirement has found a compromise.  I haven't attended a ISWA meeting this year except for the bid meeting so not sure on the discussion they had on this but it looks like they have tried to help the "no love for the north" people to make sure they can still attend State.  So now, by them trying to help out the people who cried foul about the qualifiers, will we see a backlash that now that didn't follow the rules they set forth?

Curious to see how this will unfold I will go pop some popcorn and come back to read the comments.

If the qualification process was a success why declare a waiver opportunity?

Also, why declare a waiver opportunity so close to the deadline to register?

All my kids that looked at the calendar and said "can't make two freestyle events" stopped training freestyle. There was no point to it. I'm sure that was the case for many others.

When you make a rule, follow it. You are now telling all 800+ people that went to two events that "well you didn't have to, but thanks."

Wow... straight up bull crap by the ISWA.

I sent an email to Mr. Rosbottom and Coach Hull about a waiver for my son on March 8th because of the National Schedule we were attending.  I received ZERO response back... In addition, Ty was injured while wrestling in Virginia and rushed back this past weekend to get our 2nd qualifier in so he could attend Freestyle/Greco state.  If I would have known there was any type of waiver process, I certainly would have applied to the ISWA to give him an extra week to heal up.

I love how the letter was dated April 29... that's TODAY! Nice communication skills... we abided by the rules as they were stated and would have expected everyone else in the state to abide by them as well.  Now, with 1 day left to register, the ISWA changes their tune.  Ridiculous!

seriously yes if they were going to do a waiver I think sooner rather than later would of been better.  on the other hand atleast they are trying to help the ones that truely want to go but couldn't make the two events.

Not sure what side i fall on in this discussion...

This is as funny as Warsaw's local drub rehab being approved to have a location on High Street........These things cannot be made up folks!!!!!!!!!!

BECAUSE THEY HAVE LESS THAN 135 PEOPLE REGISTERED!!!!!!! They have to do something.   I predicted there would be less than 500.

I would be pretty upset as a parent knowing I ponied up money for gas, entry, food, even hotels to get two events in when I didn't really have to.

Yea but on the flip side I know our club will have a large # there but only two have signed up so far.  We have club practice tonight and will be weighing kids in to see where they fall and then registering tonight or parents will do it tomorrow.

Unless your tripleB then he tries to carpool with me whenever he can lol

Just a travesty. All the blabbering about giving this new mandate a shot, strengthening the styles for the future so that IN can become a powerhouse...BS..all about the almighty buck. Hopefully the local clubs made off like bandits in the mandated period because ISWA just did them an injustice! Who's going to bother wasting $/weekends in the future. The Boy Who Cried Wolf comes to mind.

All the hatin' on the north during this fiasco at times seemed appropro, but you know what?? I think we were right on this one! "Proud to be a Northerner...where at least I know I'm not a BS'r..." sung to the tune of Garth Brooks or whatever 'southerner' sang it.

qualify top 3 at a tournament at a weight and you qualify for state at that weight, like it used to be.

I took my kid to several freestyle meets, I'm not complaining, he got decent mat time and got to meet famous people like Fabio Jr.

We are not doing our state any justice by allowing kids to just show up and wrestle and then go to nationals and get pummeled. They have to get Freestyle mat time in.

And Tskin drives an Aveo so when we carpool, it's serious (ly tight) business!

Just heard of a kid who missed a family member's wedding to go to a local tournament. Now he is basically being told, "just kidding you didn't have to do that, but thanks for your sacrifice."

Not a good situation when kids and parents made sacrifices to go to events and now are being told they could have just petitioned in.

Yikes! So ISWA wants to strengthen the styles, promote growth, make IN better..yet it has clearly disappointed a kid and his team that last I checked, would be the poster child for the exact demographic they should be looking to hook! No one in the organization could reply to a state runnerup and by not doing so, place that wrestler in a vary precarious health position...all while this wrestler does EVERYTHING in his power to accomplish each MANDATE the ISWA throws at him which includes the desire to strengthen his states stature in the styles? Oh, and this kid and team are connected to one of the better/upcoming programs in the state that, I assume, is actually GROWING in numbers and profile? Nice. Maybe there is a reason they are an RWO and not RTC (I kid, I know there is). Maybe others might follow now since teaching the styles doesn't need to be a priority and all qualify for state again anyway? Let's be truthful, no waiver will be denied this year! I'm sorry you and your wrestler had to go thru this.

Look, I was going to take a middle school team to viper pit duals.  Got everyone's buy in at club.  Made all the plans.  Then the two tournament qualifier rules is introduced for fs state by ISWA.  I understood why the ISWA brought about the rule.  Personally, I disagreed with two tournaments, but I just dealt with it.  Canceled the viper pit plans.  All the kids were disappointed.  The kids didn't get to wrestle in a really dang good national tournament at viper.  Told my grandson we just have to do this.  Went to a local fs tournament instead that was about two hours away.

Like Y2, we also had some kids who just stopped wrestling because they weren't going to get two qualifiers in because work, proms, baseball and so forth.

I am not trying to be cynical.  I really love and respect the ISWA.  But if wrestlers and parents are manufacturing reasons to get waivers, well sir, I find that very distressing.  Particularly because I am not sure how the ISWA could even evaluate requests for a waiver.  If a kid is from Rising Sun, how does the ISWA really know if he did break his finger five weeks ago?  If a kid is from LaPorte, how does the ISWA really know the kid was on the travel soccer team or had to attend a wedding?

Too much margin for error in granting waivers.  Too much room for inequities.  Too much legal liability.  ISWA made a rule.  Now the organization and those of us in the membership will need to stick with the rule.

There was a kid a couple weeks ago that entered and weighed in for an event even though he wasn't medically cleared! He didn't wrestle, but NEEDED to get one of this tournaments in. So his family donated $40 to a tournament to get this done. Now the ISWA is telling that family that they could have gotten a waiver. This is bad business and if I were that parent I would be furious that I was forced to donate $40 for this.

Well look at Y2, the Tom Rinaldi of Indianamat.....delivering the sad motivational stories!!

It was a cold, windy Saturday morning when this particular family found themselves in a car wreck, with twisted steal, cries, and the blood from his sister still fresh, Little Johnny wouldn't be deterred, no he had to qualify for ISWA state! He kissed Mom and sister farewell, and with a tear in his eye he set off on foot with only his Asic Tigers, Head Gear and his Pro Power sweatshirt to keep him warm. He traveled through 95 inches of snow, over the hills and through the cornfields of Indiana to that little gym in Hickory. Johnny wanted to an ISWA state qualfier...

I have never complained about the 2 tournament rule.  We went to 2 of them, 1 local and one 3 hours away that cost me around $400 for the weekend.  Now I'm told I could've saved my money and just petitioned to get in?  Either you have a rule or you don't.  This wishy-washy BS is ridiculous!
