Sean Mappes and others

Recommended Posts

Former Center Grove state champ and current Tenn-Chattanooga 174 Sean Mappes is the 2014-15 SoCon champ, and will be heading into the big dance with a head of steam.

Kudos also to former Warren Central standout Shabaka Johns of VMI, who nearly joined Mappes atop the podium, but instead finished an impressive 2nd.

Hanover Central alum Paul Petrov (Bucknell) and Army stud Brian Harvey, formerly of Cathedral finished an impressive 3rd and 4th, respectively,at the EIWA tourney.

Just wanted to give a little love to our non-big 10ers out there battling.

To break down the NCAA ramifications of these results a bit:

Mappes and Petrov earned automatic bids to the NCAAs with their finishes.

Johns lost a heart-breaker in the final of a weight that had only one NCAA spot on the line.  He beat a guy in the semi's who was ranked (Top 33) in both the coaches' panel and RPI, while losing the tight final to a guy who was also ranked in the coaches' panel.  He has a record very similar to both guys coming out of the same conference as them.  He should be in the discussion for the at-large spots that will be handed out on Monday.

Harvey was upset as the 2-seed in the semi's of a weight that had only 2 spots available.  He then lost the 3/4 match to the #1 seed, who had also been upset.  However, he is #10 in the RPI and #15 in the coaches' panel rankings.  It seems unlikely he won't be given one of the at-large spots for the 33-man field at 174 on Monday.

LeCount should still be in the at-large discussion.  He came in ranked #33 in the coaches' panel ratings, the MAC had 5 guys ranked at his weight, and they also had 4 in the RPI Top 33, not even including the #5 guy in the country who won the weight.  It seems his 4th place finish and coaches' panel position should give him a shot.

Just read where 13 of the top 33 at 157 didn't "earn" their bids. There are 6 at large bids available for those guys. It looks like it could be very difficult for LeCount to get in...but you never know.

I could only find these 11 guys at 157 that had either an RPI Top 33 or a Coaches' Panel Top 33 position and did not earn automatic berths:

Kelly-Iowa: 9th B10 (1st miss), #5 RPI, #15 CP

LeCount-CMU: 4th MAC (1st miss), ur RPI, #33 CP, beat Jensen @ MAC

Zeerip-EMU: 5th MAC (2nd miss), #27 RPI, #31 CP, beat LeCount/Jensen @ MAC

Jensen-N.Iowa: 6th MAC (3rd miss), #21 RPI, #25 CP

Garbinsky-Pitt: 3rd ACC (1st miss), #32 RPI, ur CP, beat Kerr-Brown @ ACC

Kerr-Brown-Duke: 4th ACC (2nd miss), #13 RPI, #27 CP

Colgan-Wyoming: 2nd West Reg. (1st miss), #28 RPI, ur CP

Hvolbek-Stanford: 6th PAC-12 (3rd miss), #19 RPI, ur CP, injured P-12 semi’s, defaulted final 2 matches

Staudenmayer-Brown: dnp EIWA, #12 RPI, #18 CP, injured P-12 quarters, defaulted wrestleback & dnp

Collica-Oke St.: 1st Big-12, #15 RPI, #16 CP (no auto allocations for Big-12, but regular season & conference profile would have given him an auto bid)

DeAngelis-Okla.: 2nd Big-12, #9 RPI, #20 CP (no auto allocations for Big-12, same virtually guaranteed bid situation as Collica)

From this list, at the absolute WORST, I would say LeCount would be slotted 8th (definitely ahead of Jensen, who he just beat for the 2nd time, and Colgan & Hvolbek, who the coaches' panel doesn't have rated when they consider quality wins and losses, etc.)

However, on the best-case scenario side, I don't know all the win/loss results from the regular season for all these guys, but it seems reasonable that LeCount could be as high as #4 from the list above.

--I think there's a good chance he would get a spot ahead of both CP-#27 Kerr-Brown and his ACC running mate CP-unranked Garbinsky.  Garbinsky is essentially in the same spot as LeCount (first slot out of auto-qualifier) and he's not seen well by the CP.  And Kerr-Brown was only slightly higher than LeCount in the CP and finished two spots out of auto territory, including losing to Garbinsky.

--Also, LeCount finished ahead of Zeerip at the MAC, despite his quarterfinal loss to him AND LeCount owns a regular season win over him.

--Finally, I'm not sure about the health situation of the injured Staudenmayer, but that could be yet another guy who won't get slotted ahead of LeCount.

So in summary, I would have to guess he's slightly better than 50/50 odds of getting a bid when we see that he's definitely between #4 and #8 in line for one of the 6 spots available.  How's that for nerve-racking when the brackets get released?

This isn't quite right.  I read the USAwrestling link you posted and it says it will be similar to last year.  Starting at 1pm, they will release the qualifier list, including at-large bids, for one weight each half hour (e.g. 125lbs at 1pm, 133lbs at 1:30pm, etc.).  Then, at 6pm they will release the seeds and brackets on the NCAA selection show, which will be broadcast here: http://www.ncaa.com/live/player?vid=2015/1909&date=2015/03/11

So this means the possible at-large bids we're curious about (LeCount-157, Johns-165, and Harvey-174) will be revealed at 3, 3:30, and 4pm.

125's seem to be about according to chalk: the highest Coaches' Panel-rated guys, plus the highest RPI guy not ranked in the CP.  That bodes well for Harvey and not so well for Johns.   Again, though, it's not that straightforward at 157 for LeCount if you read my other post.

They go off-script at 141 and give a bid to the 19-15 guy from Chattanooga who was the SoCon #1 seed but lost the tourney final in a weight in which the SoCon had no guys in the CP or RPI rankings.  Meanwhile, 4 guys from the CP rankings were left out of the field--including two ranked Big 10 guys that lost only to guys who are in the NCAA field at the Big 10 tourney.  Does this give renewed hope to a guy like Johns with a decent record who just missed auto-qualifying?

LeCount misses out.  The kid from Brown who was hurt got a bid, the Duke kid ranked just ahead of him that finished 2 spots out of auto-bid territory got a bid, and Zeerip from his conference (who he split with and finished ahead of at conference, but who beat him last and was ranked a couple spots higher) got a bid.  I'm guessing based on who was chosen that he was next in line.  Very tough news.

Amazing, amazing true freshman season going from JV 141 open tournaments to the brink of the NCAAs after breaking into the lineup way up at 157.  What a beast. He will most definitely be back and be for real.

The biggest thing that hurt him is wrestling half the season at 149 as a redshirt. If he was at 157 the whole season he would have had a little more of a body of work. He had a great season considering the late pull of his redshirt and being right on the bubble to qualify up a weight class. I'm excited to see him over the next 3/4 years.
