Class 2A IHSWCA State Duals qualifying scores (thru Sectional)

Recommended Posts

Below are the UNOFFICIAL State Duals qualifying scores for 2A through sectional.

In 2A, these scores are somewhat meaningful already.  Your team will need about 150 or more to realistically earn an automatic invite.  You will need approximately 135 or more to be in voting consideration.  Teams that have already approached those positions are in very good shape.  On the other hand, some teams far down the list can still make enormous jumps in the next two weeks.

All classification of teams is subject to change with the new IHSAA classification data that will be released in early March.  Old enrollment data is here: http://www.ihsaa.org/Portals/0/ihsaa/documents/quick%20resources/Boys%27%20Basketball%20Classifications%202013-15.pdf  The current cutoff between 3A and 2A is between New Castle and Shelbyville.  IF YOU ARE NEAR THAT CUTOFF, YOU MIGHT NOT BE IN 2A!  DON'T COUNT ON ANY CLASSIFICATION BEING OFFICIAL UNTIL MARCH!  The cutoff between 2A and 1A is right now between Southmont and Indy Cardinal Ritter.  If you're near that line, you could move down to 1A with the new data.

There is not a good way to format this information on this new board.  The first number is your team's score right now.  The second is your regional Category (which reflects the quota of semi-state scoring positions available at each weight for your regional).  The third number is how many guys you still have alive and the final number is how many points are available for you to score at regional.

A quick reminder based on questions people are asking me:

Top score from each class for each semi-state gets an automatic bid.  Then, the next 6 highest scores get automatic bids as well.  Finally, the next highest few scores are considered by the selection committee for voting in the final 2 spots to complete the field of 12.

Procedures are outlined here: http://www.ihswca.org/news/selection2015

In short, though, it's because Delta has a younger team.  They have more current points and they have potential to score more than Bellmont next week--in both cases because more of their guys still alive are underclassmen.  Regional and semi-state qualifiers for underclassmen in 2A receive 12 and 16 points, respectively.  The same advancement levels for seniors receive only 6 and 8 points.

Thanks. Makes good sense.

Here's Madison:

6 senior regional qualifiers = 6 x 6 = 36
3 underclass regional = 3 x 12 = 36
2 underclass sectional 5th/6th = 2 x 4 = 8
1 underclass sectional no-place = 2

Bonus points for having two forfeits = 2  (bonus in 2A is 8 for 0 FFs, 4 for 1 FF, and 2 for 2 FFs)

36 + 36 + 8 + 2 + 2 = 84

It could be also that you're not considering your sectional's Category, which determines the quota of awarded regional positions per weight class for your sectional.

What's your school?

Lebanon is the school I'm trying to figure out and it doesn't add up.

4 Seniors regional qualifiers 4 x 6 = 24

4 underclassmen qualifiers 4 x 12 = 48

4 underclassmen 5th & 6th 4 x 4 = 16

1 underclassmen no place 1 x 2 = 2

1 forfeit bonus 1 x 2 = 2

Total is 92 but list shows 128

They are in a category 6 Sectional, meaning if they placed in the top 6 at sectional, then they got Regional points.

Right.  Lebanon is in a Category 6 sectional, meaning Top 6 get regional points and the two non-placing quarterfinalists at each weight get sectional 5th/6th points.  Lebanon had 4 underclass sectional 5/6 guys upgraded to regional points and 1 underclass non-placer upgraded to sectional 5/6 points.

So the totals look like this:

4 seniors to regional = 4 x 6 = 24

8 underclassman w/ regional points = 8 x 12 = 96

1 underclassman w/ sectional 5/6 points = 4

Bonus for having only 1 forfeit = 4

24 + 96 + 4 + 4 = 128

I know Yorktown is more senior dominated than Delta, but it's still weird to see Delta ahead of them by 24 points when Yorktown outscored them by 117 at sectionals.

That's because placement at sectional didn't matter at all...just advancement.  Right now, we're looking at point totals as if we've wrestled the first round of a 32-man individual tournament.  There's no way, yet, to factor in the fact that many more of the Yorktown guys will go far than will the Delta guys.  Those points come later.  Last year, Yorktown was in about the same spot after sectional.  With this scoring system, they would have had a final score of 267, compared to Bellmont in 2nd at 205 and everybody else at about 185 and lower.  As you can see...Yorktown will separate themselves if they get a bunch to later rounds of the state tournament again.
