FCFIGHTER170 Posted December 11, 2014 Share Posted December 11, 2014 The 02 EMD was unreal also we new castle placed 5th and we were beat by 60 with our lone win coming from Terrell coatie against conkling who was runner up (side note coatie beat danny Williams also that year)...we had a record of 38-3 with 5 state qualifiers and we got dog walked well team did that day...Emd was stacked for sure and maurer wasn't a pleasant match for me either lol...that was wildemans coming out party vs Keith Garrard I never felt so helpless in a competition setting they were GREAT Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm not sure of the exact breakdown, but they too had multiple state champions and a number of place winners. 2010 Mishawaka and that Griffith team would have been a good battle if we are talking dream match-ups. PURDUEdad Posted December 11, 2014 Share Posted December 11, 2014 Not only did the 2003 MD team have 4 state champs, but they had 3 others who lost to Escobedo, Hernandez and Tsirtsis at state (and Macke didn't lose to Escobedo by much . . .) While I am not one of the MD faithful, the depth of that team was unbelievable. With the aid of a time machine, I guess it might be interesting to get that team and whatever other all-time great team (other than another MD team) together to face off. (But the other team would also have to factor in the effect of the gym being packed full of hard-headed Germans from the west side of Evansville, all decked out in MD colors . . .) PURDUEdad, I was just recalling this same fact when I came across the first mention of the 2003 MD team. If it wasn't for three of Indiana's best individuals ever (all three still around the top in career wins, TD, and pins) that 2003 MD team would have looked even more dominate at team and individual state. Then throw in very solid state finals wrestlers like Santana Adams, Jose Escobedo, and David Martin III that EMD also had to also contend with at team state too. That Griffith team could definitely be mentioned as one of the better teams ever, which just further goes to show how skiled to 2003 MD group was individually or as a team. Imagine MD wrestling against THAT line-up, and giving up a total of only 5 bonus points . . . (and no pins!) And then MD getting 18 bonus points themselves . . . The strategy of maximizing your own bonus points, while not giving up many, sounds simple, but the top programs capitalize on that. I do know that SPG was ranked in the top 3 nationally that season. And I believe EMD ended up in the top 15 nationally. That is somewhat a rare national ranking for an Indiana team since our travel restrictions often keep our top programs from facing the best national competition. I went and watched this dual, here's what I remember: MD only won 4 matches. Matt Coughlin won a decision, Craig Weinzapfel beat David Erwin, who was highly touted at the time, by decision, Sam Wildeman won a decision and their HWY Schwarz won by pin. Final score was something like 39-15. Macke lost to Dustin Schlatter by 5 or so. He kept trying to hit a jap throw and Dustin would just counter it and take the points. Dustin Nosko (who won state that year) was teched quickly by CP Schlatter. I'm thinking early in the 2nd period. Maurer lost to Joe Dennis, as mentioned earlier in the thread. This one was tied with about 6 seconds to go and Dennis fired off 3 rapid shots in a row and nailed the last one at the buzzer for the win. Unfried, who placed at 215, was man-handled by Jason Marshall. This guy was a vicious brute. Pretty sure he injury defaulted Unfried and several other opponents that evening.
