NORTH MANCHESTER, IND. – If the start of heavyweight Dustin Kult's second season in a Manchester University singlet is any indication of what lies ahead, fans of the Spartans may want to take notice.

The junior took four wins, including two by fall, to capture his weight class at the 2014 Indiana Little States Championships. His final decision of the day, a 3-2 heart-stopper over top-seeded Garrett Harding of St. Catharine College of Kentucky, left a strong Black and Gold contingent breathless.

"This is all about my teammates being in the room and helping me be prepared so quickly (for the season)," Kult admitted. "I found the transition from football a little easier this time around, as I felt I was in better shape."

Kult, after reaching the finals with an overtime win and back-to-back falls, needed every ounce of the home crowd's backing to get past Harding. After a scoreless first three minutes, Harding used his size advantage to keep Kult flat on his stomach for a minute-plus of riding time. Kult escaped late for a 1-0 lead, but his opponent escaped early in the third for a 1-1 tie. Knowing full well a takedown was needed, Kult caught Harding on a pass-by move, grabbing his ankle and getting the critical two points for a 3-1 edge. The Angola, Ind., native held off several strong charges from Harding late to seal the victory.

"It's a great way (for Dustin) to get his season going," MU head coach Matt Burlingame noted. "It was also good for us to end the tournament (that way). I was pleased, overall, with how things went. We had some good technique in matches, but there is still work to be done."

Other top eight marks for the Spartans came from sophomore 174-pounder Dylan Lauffer (Fairfield, Ohio) who placed sixth; freshman 165-pounder Tristan Wilson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who ended eighth; freshman 157-pounder Alex Arney (Fort Wayne, Ind.) who wound up seventh; junior Bryce Roberts (Rochester, Ind.) and sophomore Paul Mikesell(Macy, Ind.) who took sixth (Mikesell) and seventh (Roberts) at 149; freshman Brennen Storey (Rome City, Ind.) who ended eighth at 133; and the tandem of sophomore Alan Mock (Peru, Ind.) and freshman Ruben Rodriguez, Jr., (Hammond, Ind.) who closed the tournament in third (Rodriguez, Jr.) and fifth (Mock).

The Black and Gold move into dual action Thursday, Dec. 11, traveling National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern University for a 7 p.m. start.

ADA, OHIO – While the final score of a non-conference dual against National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern University read 45-0 against Manchester University Thursday, Dec. 11, Spartans' head coach Matt Burlingame came away with plenty of positives for the future.

The Black and Gold narrowly missed avoiding the shutout at several turns. The freshman combination of Ruben Rodriguez, Jr. (Hammond, Ind.), at 125, and Chase Wilson (Peru, Ind.) dropped 4-1 and 4-0 decisions, respectively. Freshman 165-pounder Matthew Ruddick (Seymour, Ind.) gave the Polar Bears' Colt Lovejoy, ranked No. 16 by D3Wrestle.com, all he could handle for seven minutes, holding a 7-4 lead at one point before Lovejoy rallied in the third period to win 11-9. Sophomore 184-pounder Brian Clark (Milford, Ind.) put up five points in a season-opening 11-5 defeat, and junior heavyweightDustin Kult (West Lafayette, Ind.), facing off against second-ranked Cody Lovejoy, battled in a 5-0 loss.

"It was a rough night but, with five starters out of the lineup, we're not going to be at our best," Burlingame admitted. "Beyond that, I think Ruben and Chase had winnable matches and came up short. Ruddick, in his collegiate debut, wrestled extremely well against a nationally-ranked opponent but couldn't hang on for the win.  I felt Kult had a strong result against Lovejoy (ranked No. 2 nationally) despite only having been in practice the last two weeks."

Manchester University continues dual competition Saturday, Dec. 13. They take on NCAA Division I Indiana University in a 12 p.m. start at University Gymnasium on IU's campus in Bloomington.
