Top teams of 2014-15

Recommended Posts

In my opinion, Cathedral will once again be the team to beat next season. They return with state placewinners Rypel, Harvey, Bailey, and Turner, and semi-state ticket rounders Ben Stewart, Bryce Lewis, and Ryan Guhl. 2013-14 letterwinner, Dezmend Goddard, returns to the lineup. Incoming freshman wrestlers are Dylan Stewart and Zach Melloh should also do some good for the team. If the four placewinners can place high (Rypel wins it), and if Ben Stewart is at the right weight, he has a chance to win or place really high. The freshmen have a chance to do some damage, and Guhl will probably place in the state.

You mean for the flawed IHSAA team state correct, because Cathedral wasn't even a top five team in the state.

Even with the big losses at 132, 152, and 160, Yorktown returns almost an entire starting line up of good kids. Too bad they're in class 2A, I think they'd be competitive with all of the top 3A teams.

Yorktown is bigger the EMD. They should bump up to 3a also if they're that good.

lebanon is going to be a tough team next year.  They are returning everyone besides their HWT, but there are some middle schoolers coming in that are good and will make an impact at the heavier weights as well as the lighter weights.  Should be interesting.

Is the NCAA tournament also flawed?  Would you prefer a National Duals format?  Minnesota beat Penn State in a dual.

If you want to find the best dual team the NCAA system is flawed....if you want to find the best tourney team then its right on point.  I am not sure why we argue about best team.  If you win the Coaches Association Tourney your the best dual team, if you win the IHSAA title your the best tourney team. They are two different beasts and should probably have two separate tourneys. I dont think anyone can deny that being the best dual team doesnt make you the best tourney team and visa versa.  So last year Franklin was the best dual team and cathedral was the best tourney team...wheres the argument??

The argument is when someone attaches the words "State Champions" to the best tourney team or this is not how a Wrestling Team should be judged.

The NCAA system is really not comparable to our IHSAA system.

A much higher percentage of wrestlers qualify for the NCAA than we do for high school.  So, the top programs in the country all qualify at least 8, 9, or all 10 weight classes.  That levels the playing field better than our system where some teams qualify 2 or 3 times as many guys as other top programs.

Also, since the NCAA has full wrestlebacks, very good wrestlers who don't place can still score a lot of points for their team.  Most of the time, it's those wrestlers who ultimately win the team championship for their school.  With our IHSAA system, it's all or none - if a wrestler isn't top 8, then he doesn't score any points for his team, whether he gets 6th at sectional or loses Friday night to the state champ.

These are reasons why you don't see college teams with 3 or 4 studs winning the NCAA team title (i.e., Cornell).  In our IHSAA system, 3 or 4 studs can win the championship, even with more weight classes.  While not the same as a dual meet, the NCAA tournament is a whole lot closer to it than our state tournament scoring.

Also, every match at the NCAA's counts for the team score.  That's not the case with our state finals.  Anybody have any idea why Friday nights matches are not counted in the team score?  That is still the case, correct?

To expound on the previous two posts: if we had 3 classes of individual state finals with 32 guys per weight class for each of the 3 classes, THEN it would be virtually identical to the college system because all the good teams in each class would be scoring points from most of their guys.  The top few teams would definitely be good duals teams while also having strong individuals.

The IHSAA wanted uniformity throughout the system, so 8 is their magic number for scoring.

That is a stupid reason.  Bunch of idiots at the IHSAA.  You win your friday night match, it should count.  Period.
