Section 1...I will post the others as I go. When I'm done, I will publish the final article on the front page of the website in a more visually pleasing form.

106

Undefeated freshman Breyden Bailey of Cathedral is the favorite here, but he has an extremely challenging potential Ticket round matchup in senior DeMonte Dawkins of Beech Grove. While Bailey would be favored, matches in that round are extremely pressure-packed, and facing a battle-tested senior is a very tough task. Besides Bailey, four other ranked wrestlers, including Dawkins, will be competing. On the other side of the bracket, another very tough freshman, red-hot Alec White of New Palestine, appears to be the favorite to make it to the finals. In reality, though, there are a lot of young wrestlers here, and this weight could feature some big surprises.

Last year's champ: Chad Red, New Palestine

Ranked wrestlers:

#2 Breyden Bailey, Cathedral

#8 Alec White, New Palestine

#14 Karl Wilhelm, Carmel

#16 DeMonte Dawkins, Beech Grove

#19 Ryan Hawkins, Perry Meridian

Feature matchups:

Garrett Allen, Sr., Frankton vs. #14 Wilhelm (Ticket round) – A tough pair of seniors, with a combined 6 losses could do battle in a match to go to State. Allen was upset at Sectionals last year, but comes into this weekend as a regional runner-up. Wilhelm, like all of his Greyhound teammates, has improved greatly the past couple of seasons and is strong in all phases of a wrestling match.  He lost a Ticket match to Warren Central’s Matthew McKinney last year and will battle to take the next step.

#2 Bailey vs. #16 Dawkins (Ticket round) – This potential match features an undefeated freshman versus a very tough senior. Dawkins missed semi-state last year, but the Hornets wrestle a competitive schedule and he’s been in a lot of tough, close matches. This should be a real test for Bailey.

#2 Bailey vs. #8 White (Ticket round) –These two talented freshman met earlier this season, with Bailey winning a decision by one point. They are both capable of winning this weekend, but each could also make a very deep run the following weekend.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Bailey, White, Hawkins, Wilhelm

The Alpha Dog:

Breyden Bailey

Five state-ranked wrestlers will compete in this field of 16. There truly are no dominant, guaranteed-to-qualify athletes here; instead, there are a lot of excellent wrestlers who are capable of running the gauntlet and taking the semistate crown. Freshman Skylour Turner of Cathedral is the highest ranked competitor, but he could have his hands full with three other potential opponents ranked in the top-10. The four ranked in the top-10 should produce the champion at this weight.

Last year's champ: Jacob Cottey, Perry Meridian

Ranked wrestlers:

#6 Skylour Turner, Cathedral

#7 Cornelius Elliott, Perry Meridian

#8 Austin Holmes, Hamilton Southeastern

#10 Eugene Starks, New Palestine

#18 Boone Welliever, Southmont

Feature matchups:

#6 Turner vs. #18 Welliever (Ticket round) – If Welliever can get by talented freshman Michael Deal of Batesville, these two could meet for the third time this season. While Turner won the first two matches, one of those matches was a 2 point margin of victory. Welliever has been competitive against a lot of the better wrestlers he’s faced, and Turner should be on upset alert.

#7 Elliott vs. Caleb Bocock, Lebanon (Ticket round) – Elliott clearly improved a great deal this season at Perry, after beginning his high school career at Franklin Central. He didn’t make it out of regionals last year as a Flash wrestler; conversely, Bocock upset a #1 seed at New Castle, en route to nabbing a State Finals invitation.  While Elliot has had a superior season, he lost his only matchup against Turner, while the coach’s son Bocock went 1-1 against him. This could go either way, although Elliot should be favored slightly.

#8 Holmes vs. #10 Starks (Ticket round) – Another brutal Ticket match at this weight, Holmes and Starks combine for just 5 losses all season,  despite competing against some of the very best in the state week in and week out. Holmes lost a tough Ticket round match last season against Brett Johnson, and so far this season, has been nearly perfect. Starks has been very competitive all year, even in his losses.

#6 Turner vs. #7 Elliott (Semifinal round), #6 Turner/#7 Elliott vs. #8 Holmes (Finals)– Turner owns wins over Elliott and Holmes, but we’re talking about some pretty competitive matches, so it’s a bit of a pick ‘em between these two and between the winner of this match and likely Austin Holmes. History has shown that top seeds fare very well at State, so the stakes are huge for this trio.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Holmes, Turner, Elliott, Flood

The Alpha Dog:

Austin Holmes

120

Chad Red leads a solid field at 120. Last year’s state champ at 106, the sophomore Red has been pretty dominant all season. While he should cruise to another semistate crown, the battles for 2nd through 4th should be compelling. There are two absolutely monstrous opening round matches, and the battle to determine who will face Red should be highly competitive.

Last year's champ: Deondre Wilson, Warren Central

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Chad Red, New Palestine

#9 Matthew McKinney, Warren Central

#10 Jacob Cottey, Perry Meridian

#14 Preston Mantel, Zionsville

#19 Edrece Stansberry, Hamilton Southeastern

Feature matchups:

#19 Stansberry vs. Charlie Baker, Crispus Attucks (Opening round) – Stansberry has been rock-solid all year, dropping only one match on the season. Baker made it to the State Finals last season, and is also having a terrific year. Both are seniors; Baker is unpredictable and dangerous on his feet and Stansberry fights against giving up points like his life depends on it. Should be an outstanding match, and the winner has a great shot to make it through the Ticket round.

#10 Cottey vs. #14 Mantel (Opening round) – It’s very strange to see these two not ranked higher, as they have 3 state placements between them and countless huge wins during their respective careers. However, this season has produced a tremendous level of parity. That said, each of these two kids is supremely dangerous to the rest of the field. An interesting note—this is the third time these two have met up at semi-state in either an opening round or ticket round. Cottey won the first two, and should be a slight favorite in what might be the best opening round match of the day.

#14 Mantel/#10 Cottey vs. #9 McKinney (Semifinal round) – McKinney has really had Cottey’s number so far this year, with multiple wins against the Perry stud to his credit. Is this weekend Cottey’s time to turn the tables? It’s hard to count out the tough senior. If it’s Mantel, wrestling with the facemask again, can he get hot like he did during last year’s postseason? All three of these young men were participants in the State meet last year.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Red, McKinney, Cottey and Stansberry

The Alpha Dog:

Chad Red

126

Just like last year, this is the first really deep weight class, as seven ranked wrestlers will compete in this field. While Chastain is a probable favorite, he will have zero easy matches if he wants to capture the title. Still, he’s beaten all his opponents at 126 this year, with his stout leg defense and strong mat prowess. Who his finals opponent will be is up in the air a bit, but there are several strong candidates.

Last year's champ: Tom Gettinger, Connersville

Ranked wrestlers:

#5 Jack Chastain, Hamilton Southeastern

#8 Aidan Kenny, Perry Meridian

#11 Chandler Moore, Southmont

#12 A.J. Belden, Westfield

#16 Joel McGhee, Warren Central

#17 Rylan McCarty, New Palestine

#18 Nick Ellis, Roncalli

Feature matchups:

#8 Kenny vs. #11 Moore (Opening round) – Kenny has had a terrific senior season thus far, but there’s no doubt that he won’t be satisfied if he doesn’t finally obtain the elusive state finals qualification he’s been seeking the last few years. He has all the tools, and has faced elite level competition. He dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 match to Mantel in last year’s ticket round. Moore has knocked on the door of Banker’s Life for the past two seasons as well.  He dropped a close match to Evan Smiley in his Ticket round match last year.

#12 Belden vs. #16 McGhee (Opening round) – Another nightmarish opening round matchup finds the Shamrocks’ senior Belden battling Warren’s rising sophomore McGhee. Like Kenny and Moore, Belden has been on the cusp of a state qualification, and has come up just short the past few years. He has another challenging draw this year, although not as tough as last year’s Ticket match vs. Brandon James. This should be one of the better opening round matchups, and could be going on at the same time as Moore/Kenny….which leads us to the next matchup….

#8 Kenny/#11 Moore vs. #12 Belden/#16 McGhee (Semifinal round) – Any of these four could be competing in this matchup, not to mention regional champs Nathan Boggs of South Dearborn and Niko Barrantes of Noblesville, who are dangerous opponents in Ticket round matches.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Kenny, McGhee, McCarty and Chastain

The Alpha Dog:

Jack Chastain

132

The top two wrestlers in the state at 132 will compete again this weekend at New Castle.  On the heels of last week’s 4-3 decision win for Wilson over James, it’s a near-lock that they will lock horns in the semistate title match on Saturday. James, a multiple-time state placer and Fargo All-American, is looking for his first state title. Wilson, last year’s impressive state champion, is attempting to keep his undefeated record going, a record that stretches through last year. Three additional ranked wrestlers will attempt to punch their tickets.

Last year's champ: Cody LeCount, Perry Meridian

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Deondre Wilson, Warren Central

#2 Brandon James, Perry Meridian (nationally, #16 Intermat)

#7 Evan Eldred, Westfield

#13 Sam Locke, Greenfield Central

#20 Lance Syverson, Fishers

Feature matchups:

Alston Bane, Richmond vs. Jordan Vaughn, Franklin Central (Opening round) – Tough freshman Bane won a regional crown in a pretty loaded field that included Westerfeld and Oyler. Vaughn had the misfortune of being the low man on the totem pole in a stacked regional that featured the #1, #2 and #13 grapplers at the weight class. The winner should face rugged senior Lance Syverson in a Ticket round match.

#7 Eldred vs. #2 James (Ticket round) – Eldred’s reward for winning a regional crown as a sophomore? One of the state’s best in James. Let’s not pretend this is a dream draw for James, either, as he must first get by Adam Oyler, and then returning state qualifier Eldred, with Locke and Wilson waiting for him later in the day.

#1 Wilson vs. #2 James (Final round) – It just doesn’t get much better than this at the high school level. These are elite-level athletes, with elite level physical tools and technique. James led the last match in the 3rd period, until Wilson made a stirring comeback to stay undefeated. Expect these two to battle this weekend and, the following weekend, under the lights.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Wilson, Syverson, James and Locke

The Alpha Dog:

Deondre Wilson

138

Five ranked wrestlers lead the way at 138. Third-ranked stud Tommy Cash returns to New Castle, after missing the postseason last year, due to injury. While he will likely be tested, he should be able to earn the championship this weekend.

Last year's champ: Luke Blanton, Alexandria

Ranked wrestlers:

#3 Tommy Cash, Lawrence North

#8 Trent Pruitt, Warren Central

#9 Austin Smith, Lebanon

#17 Dillon Eldred, Westfield

#20 Brett Johnson, Perry Meridian

Feature matchups:

#17 Eldred vs. #20 Johnson (Opening round) – Another Perry/Westfield tilt features the senior Eldred, whose lone loss all season was at 145, and returning state qualifier Johnson. The winner should be favored to punch his Golden Ticket.

Jake Ruberg, Lawrenceburg vs. #9 Smith (Ticket round) – Undefeated freshman Ruberg has had an excellent season, and while Lawrenceburg doesn’t exactly wrestle Perry Meridian’s schedule, undefeated is still undefeated. Conversely, Smith has wrestled a very tough schedule and has some big wins to show for it. This is a tough match to handicap.

#17 Eldred/#20 Johnson vs. #8 Pruitt (Semifinal round) – Past Tommy Cash, there are a lot of fairly evenly matched competitors. All three of these youngsters have faced some serious competition all season, so it boils down to which one gets hottest on Saturday.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Eldred, Pruitt, Cash and Smith

The Alpha Dog:

Tommy Cash

145

This is a pretty stacked weight class, led by nationally ranked returning champ Cody LeCount. His likely opponent in the finals, Ben Harvey, is seeking to become a three-time state placer.  Three additional ranked wrestlers will attempt to fill in the other two spots.

Last year's champ: Cody Handley, Northeastern

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Cody LeCount, Perry Meridian (Nationally #10, Intermat)

#3 Ben Harvey, Cathedral

#9 Jordan Lile, Fishers

#12 Kellen VanCamp, Lebanon

#16 Ivory Duerson, Lawrence North

Feature matchups:

Chandler Hale, Shenandoah vs. #12 VanCamp/Kyle Uhls, Shelbyville (Ticket round) – Hale is a tough senior, fresh off of a regional title. VanCamp has moved up and down in weight all season, attempting to face the toughest competition possible. Uhls is another tough senior, and is capable of punching a Ticket.

#3 Harvey vs. #1 LeCount (Final round) – While LeCount is a very solid favorite, and deservedly so, it would be premature and foolish to completely count out Harvey.  It’s not far-fetched to picture these two under the lights at Banker’s Life.

Dingo's  picks to advance:

Harvey, VanCamp, Lile and LeCount

The Alpha Dog:

Cody LeCount

152

This is one of the most wide-open weight classes at New Castle.  Last year’s semistate champion and runner-up were also the state champion and state runner-up (Josh Farrell and Vinny Corsaro, respectively). While not impossible, it’s extremely unlikely that this semistate will produce this year’s state champ. Still, Conner James is no pushover, and he will be tested by four additional ranked wrestlers.

Last year's champ: Josh Farrell, Greenfield Central

Ranked wrestlers:

#5 Conner James, Roncalli

#8 Eli Carlson, Carmel

#10 Michael Steele, Westfield

#11 Chance Brown, Southmont

#12 Michael Thomas, Perry Meridian

Feature matchups:

Caleb Day, Connersville/Brant Larson, Cathedral vs. #11 Brown (Ticket round) – Day and Larson have a combined 56 wins, are both seniors, and each wrestled some tough competition. Brown will be favored against either wrestler, but an upset is possible here.

#10 Steele vs. #12 Thomas (Opening round) – These two are almost mirror images of each other. Both are seniors, both are 30-5 against elite level competition, both are very well-coached and solid in all phases…this is a true pick ‘em.

Derek Noon, Noblesville vs. #8 Carlson (Ticket round) – These two have met already this year, in a match won by Carlson. Noon will have to wrestle his very best match, as Carmel wrestlers don’t beat themselves anymore. Pendoski has his team wrestling at a very high level.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Brown, James, Steele and Carlson

The Alpha Dog:

Conner James

160

While not as loaded as last year’s group, which produced 3 state placers including the state champ and runner-up, this year’s field at 160 features #1 Corsaro and #3 Borta, either of whom could be this year’s state champion. Those two appear to be clear front-runners, but there are two additional ranked wrestlers and some quality non-ranked grapplers. To be sure, the likely match between Corsaro and Borta is worth the price of admission alone; don’t be surprised if the state sees a rematch next weekend as well.

Last year's champ: Riley McClurg, Perry Meridian

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Vinny Corsaro, Cathedral (Nationally, #9 Intermat)

#3 Nick Borta, North Montgomery

#12 Ben Krege, Carmel

#16 Max Dole, East Central

Feature matchups:

Garrett Wilson, Perry Meridian vs. #16 Dole (Ticket round) – Dole has had an extremely impressive season, and is a returning semistate qualifier. Wilson has benefitted from his transfer to Perry, and this is one of the matches that Perry really wants to win, in order to solidify their chances at State.  Earlier this season, Dole beat Brickens, who won Wilson’s regional last week, but this should be a great match.

#1 Corsaro vs. #16 Krege/Cody Steele, Connersville (Ticket round) – Steele made the Ticket round last year, losing to Borta. Krege was a state qualifier last year, and has only improved this season. Unfortunately for each of them, despite being excellent senior wrestlers, they have to get by the Sicilian Sensation to punch a Ticket. That is some tough sledding.

Nick Brickens, New Palestine vs. Luke Decker, New Castle (Ticket round) – Brickens comes into this match as a regional champ and a semistate qualifier last year. Decker is a regional runner-up to Dole this year; he came in last year as a regional runner-up and drew eventual state champ Farrell in the Ticket round. Decker has been close in the past; is this his time?

#1 Corsaro vs. #3 Borta (Championship round) – This is a real clash of the titans. Corsaro has had a phenomenal high school career, sustaining a high level of success that started as a freshman. Borta is a physical specimen, a returning state placer and wrestles a dynamic, dangerous style on his feet. He is always capable of throwing his opponent to his back. However, Corsaro is so well-rounded and smart, it’s hard to picture that happening to him.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Borta, Dole, Corsaro and Decker

The Alpha Dog:

Vinny Corsaro

170

Six ranked young men, plus a slew of tough non-ranked athletes, will be competing at 170 this weekend. This is likely one of the most wide-open weight classes of the day. Undefeated Colton Gonzalez has had a superior season and is the probable favorite. However, Scott beat him in the Ticket round last year, so a rematch could be very exciting. Among the other favorites, Johnson owns a win over Tonte and Tonte beat Stewart earlier in the season.

Last year's champ: Logan Floor, Westfield

Ranked wrestlers:

#8 Colton Gonzalez, Connersville

#9 Ben Stewart, Cathedral

#13 Greg Johnson, Jr., Arsenal Tech

#14 Jeffery Scott, Clinton Central

#17 Tristen Tonte, Perry Meridian

#18 John Theriot, Carmel

Feature matchups:

#8 Gonzalez vs. #18 Theriot/Sammy Mireles, Elwood (Ticket round) – Mireles, the state’s all-time leading rusher on the gridiron (finished 4th in the Mr. Football vote), made the Ticket round last season and is a dangerous opening match for Theriot. If Theriot gets by Mireles, he could give Gonzalez a very difficult match.

#17 Tonte vs. #9 Stewart (Ticket round) – This is a huge potential match, for a couple of reasons: one, it’s two very tough, very successful freshmen going head to head for a state qualification and, two, this match could be crucial in the team race dynamic, as this is one of the most likely Perry/Cathedral matchups.

Spencer McCool, Pendleton Heights vs. #13 Johnson (Ticket round) – McCool has been here before, and he comes in as a regional champ. Johnson has faced a little tougher level of competition, perhaps, and might have an advantage with practice partners, but this one could go either way.

#8 Gonzalez vs. #14 Scott (Final round) – This would be an excellent rematch from last year’s Ticket round, if it takes place. Neither is a mortal lock to waltz into the finals, but neither would be a surprise, either.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Johnson, Scott, Gonzalez and Tonte

The Alpha Dog:

Jeffery Scott

182

Last year’s 182 class had only 4 ranked wrestlers, and yet New Castle had 4 state-placers at the weight. This year, there are five ranked wrestlers, led by #1 Blake Rypel. Rypel is a very strong favorite in this group, but the battle for places 2 through 4 should be very wide open. There are eleven grapplers here with 7 or fewer losses, so this is a very solid group.

Last year's champ: Jake Masengale, Perry Meridian

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Blake Rypel, Cathedral

#11 Ben Elliot, Noblesville

#13 Nathan Warman, Perry Meridian

#18 Garrett Hittle, Rushville

#20 Jonathan Morales, Western Boone

Feature matchup:

#18 Hittle vs. #11 Elliot (Ticket round) – These two are rugged, well-rounded seniors. Each dropped a close Ticket round match last year and hungers for a state qualification this year. Pick the one you like.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Rypel, Warman, Morales and Elliot

The Alpha Dog:

Blake Rypel

195

Seven ranked wrestlers, paced by returning state placers Katrell Moss and Brian Wagner, lead a very talented group overall. In addition to the numerous ranked competitors, there is an undefeated junior, a one-loss sophomore and a two-loss senior, who also happens to be a regional champ. In short, this is a stacked group. Oh, and it also helps everyone involved that Mitch Sliga is gone from this group.

Last year's champ: Mitch Sliga, Fishers

Ranked wrestlers:

#4 Katrell Moss, Warren Central

#7 Brian Wagner, New Palestine

#9 Jacob Aven, Zionsville

#10 Robert Manns, Crawfordsville

#11 Kaz Koehring, Perry Meridian

#17 Sam Hipple, Carmel

#19 Jeff Dixon, Hamilton Southeastern

Feature matchups:

Noah Schrader, Chatard vs. #10 Manns (Ticket round) – Manns is very tough, but undefeated is undefeated. This battle of juniors could go either way.

Layne Harnishfeger, Franklin County/#17 Hipple vs. #7 Wagner (Ticket round) – Wagner caught fire last season right about now. Harnishfeger is an accomplished senior and a regional champ. Hipple is one of a number of Pendoski disciples who is very fit and doesn’t have any obvious weaknesses.

#9 Aven vs. #11 Koehring (Ticket round) – Aven has had an outstanding season, and looked very impressive en route to winning sectional and regional crowns. He seems to have benefitted from competing this year at 195 versus 220 last year. Koehring is battle-tested and dangerous, and won’t shy away from a tough challenge.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Moss, Manns, Wagner and Aven

The Alpha Dog:

Katrell Moss

220

Four ranked athletes are joined by several other accomplished and/or dangerous grapplers. Undefeated Dylan Faulkenberg is the favorite, but there are several tough customers who will challenge him for supremacy. Faulkenberg stumbled in his Ticket match with Milan’s Lindemann last year, so he will be ready to take the next step. This weight is likely to have some upsets.

Last year's champ: Max Hernandez, Warren Central

Ranked wrestlers:

#4 Dylan Faulkenburg, Ritter

#6 Seth Vaughn, Franklin Central

#9 Courvoisier Morrow, Warren Central

#19 Tremayne Perryman, Lawrence North

Feature matchups:

Georges Brantley, Hamilton Southeastern vs. #19 Perryman (Opening round) – Perryman has a rough record, but faced some formidable competition. Brantley appears to be improving as the season goes on. The winner of this match has a solid shot at advancing to State.

Ryan Guhl, Cathedral/Daryn Milton, Westfield vs. #6 Vaughn (Ticket round) – Guhl has had an excellent year, and comes in as a regional champ. Milton, well, is prison-strong, according to those in the know. Sometimes strength like that comes into play. The winner of the tough 1-4 match faces a real stud in the one-loss senior Vaughn.

Christian Warner, Zionsville vs. #9 Morrow (Ticket round) – Warner has a tough opening match vs. Hamilton Heights’ Cole Leininger, but he has been competing at a very high level all season. Morrow has thrived, despite competing against Warren’s brutal schedule. Whichever kid earns this Ticket will have earned it.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Brantley, Faulkenberg, Vaughn and Warner

The Alpha Dog:

Dylan Faulkenburg

285

Four top-11 heavies grace the 285 field. Unfortunately, #5 and #6 will face each other in a nightmarish Ticket match. Nationally ranked stud Wesley Bernard is the clear favorite here, and he should be able to avoid the upset, using his staunch defense and elite mat skills. He won the semistate last year, beating Fargo runner-up and eventual state champ Donte Winfield in the process. Interestingly, last year’s #18 ranked heavyweight, Rushville’s Joe Garland, finished fourth in this semistate. Needless to say, he got hot at Banker’s Life and finished as the state runner-up.

Last year's champ: Wesley Bernard, Cathedral

Ranked wrestlers:

#1 Wesley Bernard, Cathedral

#5 Andre Porter, Hamilton Heights

#6 Nate Trawick, Richmond

#10 Tyler Beeson, Greenfield Central

Feature matchups:

Chet Maxey, Hamilton Southeastern vs. Jordan Clay, Broad Ripple (Ticket round) – Clay has the superior record, but Maxey is wrestling his best right now. This is a tough one to call.

#5 Porter vs. #6 Trawick (Ticket round) – This should be one of the premier Ticket matches of them all. Each has only two losses on the season and is hungry for a State berth.

Dingo's picks to advance:

Maxey, Bernard, Beeson and Trawick

The Alpha Dog:

Wesley Bernard
